Songs with a story from children with a futureNurturing young talent2 The Derrick./The News-Herald: Friday, May 10, 2019

Venango Youth Choir has existed since 2003 and presents twice-yearly concerts at Good Hope Lutheran Church in Oil City. The latest concert, titled ‘Story Songs,’ is set for 4 p.m. Saturday at the church. It is free and open to all.

On Saturday, at Good Hope Lutheran Church in Oil City, a group of talented and well-taught children known as Venango Youth Choir will perform a con-cert titled “Story Songs.” The songs draw from a heritage of folk music, partly in that every song has a plot. Choir director Beth Orris said, “The choir learn folk repertoire that hopefully will be remem-bered for many years to come. I believe that children need to learn the music that has stood the test of time and will enhance them for their lives.”

The story theme will be reinforced by two adult storytellers, retired teachers Danny Williams and Gary Henry, who perform stories and songs for children.

Venango Youth Choir began in 2003

when David Mayer, then the Community Outreach director of Good Hope and Zion Lutheran churches, approached Orris, a music teacher in Oil City, with the idea for a free after school musical program to provide any child, Grades 3 through 8, with the opportunity to learn singing techniques and repertoire, per-formance skills, how to read music, how to sing in harmony and play various instruments.

The choir has evolved into two parts. The Apprentice Choir has children in Grades 1 and 2, and the Concert Choir caters for Grades 3 through 8.

The VYC is funded by grants from organizations such as the Samuel Justus Trust, that allow the students and parents to go to a professional performance each semester or bring in special guest artists. These donations have also allowed the group to purchase music, instruments, costumes, props, T-shirts and offer sti-pends to the leaders. Five adults and two student directors are currently helping with the choir.

Venango Youth Choir rehearses on Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m. at Good Hope Lutheran Church, 800 Moran St., Oil City. A new semester will start in September. All area children are invited to join.

Saturday’s performance begins at 4 p.m., at the church, is open to all, and it is free.

The members of Venango Youth Choir learn various instruments.

Venango Youth Choir has given performances in locations other than Good Hope Church, such as this one presented at Cranberry Mall.

Living History WeekendThe staff at Cook Forest State Park

are using the natural scenery of the ancient forest to create the background and atmosphere for nine journeys into the past during the weekend of May 24 and 25. Visitors will be taken on a jour-ney through various historical eras of the United States: the French & Indian War, the Colonial Period, the Lumber Era, the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, and WWII. Living historian and master sto-ry-teller, Paul Stillman from Historically Speaking!, and historical interpreters Dave Clark, Dennis Murray, and Ray Owen will be guiding visitors through these periods of American history. They will use first person character portrayals, hands-on demonstrations, and song.

The weekend opens at 8 p.m. Friday, May 24, with “Cathedral by Candlelight.” Participants will meet at the Log Cabin Environmental Learning Classroom, where a 1750’s French marine will guide them, by candlelight, into the cathedral-like depths of the forest to meet an await-ing Seneca warrior on his trek south along the Olean trail.

The following morning, from 10 a.m.

to noon, a Native American from the past will appear to interact with visitors, who should take camp chairs and meet him at the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom. Later, a celebration of Cook Forest’s lumber heritage will show how the tools of times past were used, and then a New York regimental line soldier and a rebel of the Army of Northern Virginia will bring to life the Civil War era. Saturday’s program will end with an 18th Century Ghost Hunt of the Fire Tower and Seneca Point.

Sunday, May 26, will bring a meeting with a “World War II Marine of the 1st. Division,” followed by a colonial crafts-man working in a quill pen workshop, fol-lowed in turn by a presentation of how coal and oil were extracted in the past. The pro-gram will end on Sunday with singer,

songwriter and storyteller Ray Owen pre-senting “Pennsylvania: History in Music.”

Sibley mansion toursThe Venango Museum of Art, Science

and Industry will sponsor Sibley Mansion tours at 3 and 6 p.m. Thursday, May 30. Reservations are required for the event.

The mansion, also called Sibley Castle, is located at River Ridge. It is the location of Life Ministries.

Joseph Sibley, who was a livestock breeder, farmer, politician and the founder of an oil refining company called Galena-Signal Oil, built the mansion in 1913 and lived there until his death in 1926.

The tours are a major fundraiser for the museum each year, and they fill up fast. Reservations may be made by call-ing 676-2007.

Transit concert series concludestonight with Border Ride band

From left: Nelson Boosel, Scott Pearson, Steve Thompson and Lauren McAnallen make up Border Ride bluegrass band, performing tonight at the National Transit Building on Seneca Street in Oil City.

The last concert of the Oil City Arts Council’s 2018-2019 Transit Concert Series will take place tonight at the National Transit Building on Seneca Street from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The con-cert will feature the bluegrass band, Border Ride.

Border Ride is a local bluegrass band that has played in different venues in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. They pride themselves on the high ener-gy of their performances, and an eclec-tic music style.

Every member of the band is a vocal-ist, but they all specialize on instru-ments.

Nelson Boosel plays banjo and acoustic guitar. Boosel got his profes-sional start at the age of 3, when he was asked to sing a song at church. To the congregation’s surprise he sang, “You Ain’t Nothing but a Hound Dog.” He is characterized by a unique style and strong vocals.

Scott Pearson plays mandolin, guitar and fiddle. Pearson is a multi-award winner on the local and national scene.

He is noted for clean single-note melo-dies and sophisticated chords.

Steve Thompson plays the upright bass. Thompson has been playing the upright bass since high school and has been performing with local bluegrass bands ever since he got bitten by the bluegrass bug over 30 years ago. With his bass, Thompson lays down a solid foundation and sets the tone for the band.

Lauren McAnallen plays acoustic guitar and some percussion. McAnallen began playing music after she received a guitar as a gift on her 12th birthday. She jokes that Patsy Cline taught her to sing because she vividly recalls singing along with Patsy’s albums as a child. She brings a newgrass style to the band.

The admission cost for the concert is $8 for Oil City Arts Council members and $10 for non-members. Payment may be made at the door.

The next Transit Concert Performance Series, sponsored by the Oil City Arts Council, will begin in September.

First Baptist Church in Franklin will present a free concert to honor mothers at 7 p.m. Saturday. It will be on a Victorian theme and will feature both classical and love songs as well as sacred music. Mothers in attendance will receive a free carnation. The doors will open at 6 p.m.

This has been an annual concert since 2013, organized by Dennis Geib, the organist and pianist of First Baptist Church, in coordination with the church. The con-cert serves as a fundraiser for Mustard Seed Missions, which was founded in 2012 as a cooperative ministry (working with the County’s Human Services Department) to help those in need with

home repairs, ramp builds, beds and appliances, and out-of-county rides to medical appointments. Since 2012, MSM has helped over 1,200 families utilizing volunteers from dozens of churches throughout the county.

The Mother’s Day concert has raised several thousand dollars to contribute to this effort. A freewill offering will be taken at the event. First Baptist Church is located at 1041 Liberty St. in Franklin.

Swing Out concert at Oil City School

Oil City High School will hold its annual Swing Out concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The crowning of the Swing Out king and queen will be followed by a musical journey around the world. High school choral groups that will be featured include the men’s, women’s and a cap-pella choirs, Rhapsody in Blues, quartets and student soloists.Tickets will cost $2 and may be purchased at the door.

St. Stephen students are on the case

Seventh graders from St. Stephen School will perform “The Mysterious Case of the Missing Ring” at 1:30 and 7 p.m. today in the school auditorium.

The play centers on a highly-strung queen played by Molly Mietus who has lost her royal ring and won’t sleep until it is found. The queen hires several eccentric and competing teams of detectives to scour the kingdom and find it. The thirteen detec-tives prove to be utterly incompetent.

The play is presented by special arrangement with Pioneer Drama Services and made possible in part due to a grant from the Samuel Justus Charitable Trust.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for high school students and $1 for K-8 at the eve-ning performance.

The butler (Kyle Beichner) serves the queen (Molly Mietus) tea to keep her calm while Gypsy Rose (Eva Beck), Barbecue Bob (Keegan Shreffler) and the Professor (Brady Gibson) attempt to find clues.

Dennis Geib will be one of the per-formers at the concert Saturday.
