Routines

1. First 10 minutes are for students to get prepared. They will open the weekly calendar/schedule and click on the bell to complete morning warm up called ROLL CALL. During this time they will communicate any concerns/issues to me directly, get materials ready to go and work on their daily Level Up Tutorial/Warm Up activity.

2. Next 5 minutes are reserved for the daily Settle In Activity (breathing awareness, mindful movement, self awareness, social awareness, relationship skills, etc). We are setting the intentions and getting our whole body and mind ready to be open and receive new knowledge.

3. 35-40 minutes reserved for each LA and SS lesson.

4. Last 5 minutes together is reserved for Close Out activity.*Distance Learning will provide more flexibility*

GradesAll assignments and grades will be on Canvas. This is a new grading system this year, so please be patient while we work together to learn and improve our grading system. Remember, communication is key! Please email or text me anytime.

Assessments- Students all learn differently, therefore there will be a variety of assessment modes to meet all students’ needs and abilities.

Classwork- This includes daily warm up activities, participation/behavior and attendance on Zoom or any platform that requires student interaction. Attendance is crucial!

Homework- Any work that students are required to do with no or little assistance will be considered homework. Students are require to attempt and apply the lessons taught via video conferences or any other form of direct instruction from teacher or curriculum support. Students are to only do as much as they can on their own. When student becomes stuck or confused, they are to stop and write down their point of confusion. Afterwards, it is important that student contact teacher to share the point of confusion. Learning is a process that requires a partnership between the teacher and student/family. I do not expect my students to work in isolation. There will be a lot of back and fourth in regards to communication and completion of tasks. Students will always be encouraged to revise work and to improve. Parents, please support your student by always encouraging them to communicate with me. ELA nightly homework: Read Theory Quizzes & Independent Reading assignments will be the only consistent, daily practice assigned for homework. Students will need to complete 4 reading quizzes on the Read Theory website each week. To learn about Read Theory click HERE, otherwise, I will provide login info soon. Students must also read a novel of their choice for 30 minutes each week. Please complete reading log once a week. Both will be found on the weekly calendar. The Weekly Calendar- will be sent out every Monday on Canvas and will list the classwork, homework, announcements, reminders, etc.

Make Up and Late Work Policy

Communication is key! If you missed work due to illness, if you did not understand an assignment or are having technology issues, please email or text me so I can make accommodations and clarify for you. Some assignments will be worth submitting late, however some will not be worth the time or energy because it will not benefit the student. Please just make sure to contact me via text or email about any assignments missed or simply didn’t complete within 7 days past due date, so I can modify missed work and plan a reasonable time frame for the student to do missed work, otherwise work will not be accepted after 7 days from absence without communication.

After many years of experience and expertise, we, the 6th grade team, decided it would be highly effective to put together a checklist that you could follow before scheduling a conference with your child’s teacher(s). There are common frustrations, concerns, and problems that emerge in the 6th grade that could be easily remedied with some guidance, so we hope you find this checklist useful. Please go ahead and post it on the refrigerator or somewhere visible for your entire family. We look forward to working with you and your student.

A. Did you have an honest, non-confrontational discussion with your child about what is going on during school/classes and/or Distance Learning? Adults tend to become defensive when they are being accused. Children are no different, so it would be more effective to enter in a dialogue with your child when you are not upset or reviewing grades.

B. Have you checked Jupiter Grades? www.jupitered.com This is your bridge to connect with assignments, grades, and messages from the teacher. Review teacher’s comments on assignments, impact bar, and assignments uploaded

C. Has your child been accessing Canvas regularly? www.leusd.instructure.com

D. Have you reviewed your child’s Agenda? Homework Sheet? Binder Reminder? Have you asked your child to show you his/her notebook for examples, directions, and student work?

E. Did you ask your child to articulate their point of confusion and write it out? -Accepting a vague response, such as “I don’t get it” is not helpful to student nor the teacher. -Please help them explain what they are struggling with and put it in writing.

F. Did you have your child speak with his/her teacher about the point of confusion?

G. When a discrepancy occurs, did your child print out the Jupiter Ed Report and schedule an appointment to discuss the problem with the teacher at teacher’s convenience?

-Appropriate times would be before/after school and during break/lunch -During Distance Learning, not during a public zoom meeting (request a private one)

If all measures were taken, and there are still discrepancies and concerns, please email the teacher to either voice your concerns or schedule a conference. When conferences are arranged, please be mindful of the time set for the meeting. We ask that you keep the meetings at a maximum 30 minutes. It would be helpful to bring (or have available during Distance Learning zoom conferences) all assignments, questions, point of confusion, your child and any other documents that would aid the teacher to diagnose the problem and provide suggestions for improvement.

Thank you so much! We look forward to partnering with you this year!
