INSIDE OUT: Our Story from Ann Hughes and Carol Hornby of GlassumimassTake a group of creative people, add some technical expertiseand a liberal dash of enthusiasm, allow to kiln fire for varyingamounts of time and the result is Glassumimass, artsNK's cre-ative glass group!Developed from a project several years ago creating neon glasssculptures, Glassumimass resulted from the realisation that aglass firing kiln in the National Centre for Craft and Design waslying unused. The glassumi project uses as inspiration the wonderful churchwindows along the celebrated Spires & Steeples route, many of

which incorporate elements of local history. Enter at this time Gillian and David Wing of 'Strawberry Glass'and Liz Pearson from 'The Glass Room' in Leasingham, who brought expertise in fused glass techiques to thegroup.

WELCOME INSIDE OUT

artsNK - Experience Great Art

The idea of the project is to produce three 'glassumis', which are standing glass lanterns or lamps, which willbe internally illuminated by electricity, their glass frames being created using a variety of techniques anddesigns, all generated by the members of the group. These glassumis will be exhibited at the NCCD beforebeing displayed at the churches along the route which inspired their creation. What is the fascination? I asked Carol Hornby first about what brought her to the group:

"I've been working with the group for about 2 years now. I had done stained glass work before and original -ly joined the project as documentor, although since then we have used the documentation of the project asa more practical journal which records all the stages and processes which we undergo."Ann Hughes' role was originally as a volunteer at The Nettles in Sleaford, but, having heard about the glassgroup, she felt motivated to come along:"As well as learning so much about the processes and techniques, we have a great time. We love meetingtogether, not only to gossip, but also to share our ideas, creativity and techniques. Every stage is a challengein problem solving which keeps you on your toes!"Although the group has sufficient members at the moment for the current project, it hopes that new mem-bers will join for future projects which might include 'Glassumimass Vintage', working with the elderly, pos-sibly along the cliff villages. If you're interested, keep an eye on this website for future announcements. For more information on ‘Glassumimass’ and to read the full story, go to:

After months of hard work, first learning how to control the chis-els, then discovering the wonderful forms inside the wood, resi-dents of Martin have finally finished their spectacular gateway fea-ture.
