AlthoughitwaspreviouslyannouncedthatPhillipEnswouldparticipate,weregretheisnowunabletocometotheconferenceduetootherunexpectedcommitments.

Manitoba’sCanadaMusicWeek®(CMW)recitalwasmadespecialthisyearbyafocusonManitobacomposers.Of25performances,12wereofmusicbyManitobacomposers.Anextralayerofinterestwasaddedbyhaving6Manitobacomposersinattendance,5ofwhomspokeabouttheirpiecethatwastobeperformed.Oneperformer,Sheen,spokeaboutandsangapieceshehadcomposedherself.Herpiece,Stronger,wasawinnerinthe CFMTA/FCAPMStudentComposerCompetition.
Manystudentsintroducedtheirownpieces,makinginterestingandinsightfulcommentsaboutthemusicandthecomposers.Kevin,whoperformedV:ValseChromatiquebyS.C.Eckhardt-Gramatté,saidthathepicturedaballetdancer,dancinginthemountains.Anna,whoperformedButterfly-flybyRémiBouchard,said,“Abutterflyisasymbolofhappiness,sothispieceislightandhappy.”MartinaplayedDance (Juba)byR.NathanielDett.Shesaidshelovestoperformthispiecetoinspireotherstolearnit,too,sinceitissuchafunpiecetoplay.Isabella,whoperformedArcticVoicesbySusanGriesdale,hademailedhercomposerandaskedwhatitisliketobeacomposer.IsabellatoldusthatMsGriesdalehadansweredthatshelikedablankpieceofpaper,fullofpossibilities,andthatshelikedhearinghowdifferentpeopleinterprethercompositions.
Otherstudentswereaskedabouttheirpiecesattheintermission.Anna-LuciasaidofTeresaRichert’scomposition,SoaringSeagulls,thatshelikesimaginingtheseagulls,andthatshehadwatchedsomevideosofgullsandwater,aspartofherpreparationofthispiece.CandaceplayedGlowingGoldfishbyJulianneWarkentin.Candacesaid,“Thepiecestartspeacefully.Ithasanexcitingpartneartheend.Attheenditsoundscompleted.”
ThestudentperformersallreceivedapencilandacouponthattheycouldredeematourusedmusicbooksalesponsoredbyourPre-Diplomaprogram.Studentshadpreparedaninformationpageaboutthecomposeroftheirpiece.Thesewerepostedneartherefreshmentstable,wherejuiceandbeautifulCanadacakeswereservedbyMRMTAmemberVivianKlosse.
Awonderfullyinterestingvarietyofmusicwasperformedthroughouttherecital.Itwasdelightfultohearpolished,musicalperformancesbybeginnersrightuptouniversityprofessors.Congratulationsonajobwelldone,toalloftheperformersandtheirfamilies,andtothe13MRMTAmemberswhohelpedthestudentsprepare.Thank-youtoallthevolunteersofthisevent,particularlytheorganizerandemcee,MRMTAmemberLeeHoughtonStewart.

SouthwesternManitoba’snodtoCanadaMusicWeekwasthe13thAnnualComposers & KidseventonSaturday,October13,2018-anexcitingcelebration!ItwasaprivilegetowelcomeWesFroesefromSaskatoon,SaskatchewantoBoissevain,Manitoba.Wesiswell-knownasajazz/bluesperformerandcomposer.Heisespeciallygiftedinworkingwithandencouragingyoungpeople.Approximately36students(beginnerstoadults)fromBrandon,Deloraine,Goodlands,Killarney,MintoandBoissevainparticipatedinthisevent,eachperformingoneofthecomposer’spiecesforhim.Wesposedforpictures,eventooksomeselfieswiththestudents,signedautographsandansweredquestions.
Wes’spianocompositionsforstudentsarepublishedintheNorthern LightsCanadianPianoseriesaswellasthenewPianozzazzseries.Forstudents,parents,grandparentsandteachersitwasanexcitingdayofsharingideasandtheirloveofmusicwithWes.Heevenprovidedsomeguitaraccompanimentforsomeofthestudents.Theresultwasadayofwonderfulmusicalmemoriesthatwilllastalifetime!

I nNovember22,2017,DmitriHvorostovsky,thelegendaryoperaticbaritonepassedaway,attheageof55.Hvorostovsky’spassingwasoneofthe
unfortunateeventsofthemodernoperaworld,thatledhundredsofthousandsofhisfansworldwidetogrieve.HewillberememberedforhisrolesasEugeneOnegininthehomonymousoperabyPyotrIlyichTchaikovsky(1840-1893),ValentininFaustbyCharlesGounod(1818-1893),BelcoreinL’Elisird’AmorebyDomenicoDonizetti(1797-1848),RodrigoinDonCarlobyGiuseppeVerdi(1813-1891),andmanymore.
InNovember22,2017,IwasinmyofficeatProvidenceUniversityCollege,preparingformyclasses,whenIreceivedane-mailwiththesadnews.WhilereadingoneofHvorostovsky’sobituaries,IheardbaritoneDavidKlassen,instructorofvoiceatProvidencetalkingtooneofhisstudentsoutsidemyoffice.Thiswasaprovidentialandrevealingmoment,asIfeltthatIshouldwriteapieceaboutHvorostovsky.IranoutsideofmyofficeandaskedDavidifhewouldbeinterestedinsingingsomethingforHvorostovskyandhespontaneouslyagreed,althoughthepiecedidnotevenexistyet.ThefollowingdayIaskedpoetLuannHiebert,whoteachesLiteratureatProvidence,ifshewouldwritea“farewell”forthegreatbaritoneandtherestishistory!
ThepiecewaspremieredbybaritoneDavidKlassenandpianistTraceyRegierSawatzkyattheSpringRecitalofProvidenceUniversityCollege,onMarch31,2018,andwasrecordedafewweekslaterwiththesameperformers.Thevideooftheperformancewasuploadedonvarioussocialmediaplatforms1,andreceivedpositivecommentsfromaroundtheworld.
ThescorewassubmittedforpublicationtotheItalianDaVinciPublishing2andwaspublishedinJune2018,tocompleteasuccessfuljourneyofacollectiveworkbyfacultyofProvidenceUniversityCollege.However,thiswasnottheendofthecycle.Anumberofoperasingersfromallovertheworldwhoheardthepiece,expressedtheinteresttorecordit,radioproducersandjournalistsaskedforinterviews,fangroupsofHvorostovskyshared
thepieceontheirwebsites,theRussianambassadorofCyprusforwardedthevideotoRussianculturalinstitutionsandorganizations,prestigiousmusicschoolse.g.thePyotrIlyichTchaikovskyConservatory,andtheyshareditwiththeirfriendsaswell.
Whatisthemeaningandthemessageofthispiece,andwhydoesitappealtosomanypeoplefromdifferentcountriesandvariousculturalbackgrounds?Thequestionisnotaneasyonetoanswer.OnehastobearinmindthatDmitriHvorostovskywasoneofthebestoperasingersofhisgeneration,and-atthesametime-asymboloftheoperaperse.InmanywaysHvorostovskybecametherolesthatheperformedtosuchanextent,thathecarriedthemwithhiminhisjourneyandhispersonallife.Hewasseenasahero,alivinglegendandasymboloftheopera.Formany,hewasalivinghopethatbeauty,kindness,andemotionwillprevail.Hewasalsoapowerfulfigureintheindustryofopera,whohadabroadrangeofrepertoirerangingfromtheclassicaloperarolestoRussianfolksongsandcrossoverrepertoireincollaborationwithpopartists.Hvorostovskyshowed,inhisownuniqueway,thatthereisonlygoodandbadmusicandgenresdonotmatter.
Withthisprojectwehonouragreatartist,andsendapositivemessagethatreflectsavibrant,creative,andcollegialenvironmentofeducationatProvidence.Thisisaworkthatconnectstheemotionwiththeintellectandtheknowledgewithinakindgestureofappreciationtoagreatartist.Thiswasalsoanimportantmomentforeveryoneinvolvedinthisprojecttorememberthepowerofourartandtheresponsibilitythatgoesalongwithit.Inasense,“WeSayFarewell”meanswecare.Weexpressourfeelingsandideasinaclearandtransparentway,usingourcreativitytoinspireaswewereinspired.Hopefully,thisworkwillreachtherightearsandtherighthearts.
Themusicmaterialisshapedarounda“signalmotive”thatisheardattheverybeginningofthepieceandreturnsbeforetherefrain(ex.1).The“signalmotive”consistsofaharmoniousandconsonantbeginning(anarpeggioofaminorseventhchord)thatgraduallybecomesmoredissonanttogiveacharacteristicdissonantendingofdenial.

Theformofthepieceiscyclicasthe“signalmotive”willreluctantlyreturntotheideaofthefarewellaspresentedintherefrain.Therhythmofthepieceisverystaticanddramaticwithrarechanges,justtoemphasizethemournfulandheavyatmosphereofthelament-likepiece.Thisallowsthemelodytounderlinethewordsofthepoem,allowingtheperformertoexpressitsdramaticnature.“Vissid’arte”3isthemessageoftheworkinhonourofthelegendaryDmitriHvorostovsky,wholivedtosingandwillyetinspiregenerationsupongenerationsofmusiciansandmusiclovers,allovertheworld.

Michalis Andronikou is a composer and associate professor of composition and theory at Providence University, in Manitoba. He holds a PhD in composition from the University of Calgary.
Michalis is an associate composer of the Canadian Music Centre, a member of the Canadian League of Composers, a member of the Greek Composers Union and a member of the Center of Cypriot Composers.

Forover35years,IhaveregisteredcountlessstudentsforRCMexamsinAlberta,BritishColumbiaandnowManitoba.Preparingforanexamisachallenginggoalthatgivesatremendoussenseofaccomplishmentwhencompleted.Itisamarvellousopportunityforteameffortbetweentheteacherandthestudent.Thereispurposeandmomentumtothelessons,asdevelopmentofallmusicalskillsareachieved.
Inmyexperience,themostrewardinglessonsarecarefullyplannedandalwayslookingforwardtothenextchallengeandgoal.Teachersshouldprovidemanycreativeillustrationsandexercisestodemonstrateapoint.Studentsshouldbeencouragedtobethinkcriticallyaswellastoplayfromtheheart.Humourandkindnessshouldbealwayspresent.Timeshouldbespentwiththeteachersimplytomakemusic;toplayaduet,improviseandtopossiblyinspireanewcomposition.Afterall,ourstudentswillbetheCanadianComposersinthefuture.
Ourcollectivegoalasexaminers,teachers,studentsandparentsistofosterlife-longlearningandenjoymentofmusic.Weworktogethertoinspirestudentstoexpand
theirmusicmakingexperiencesfromyeartoyear.Howwonderfulitistobeteachingadultstudentswhoareintheir60’sandbeyondandmanyofthemaretakingexams!

Sohere’swhatwedo-weplay.Yes,weworksometimestoo,buttheultimategoalistoPLAY.Whatdoweplay?Well,ofcoursewelearntoplaymusic,butwhatdoesthatmean?Whydowecallitplayinganinstrument?Whydon’twe“work”thepiano?
Becausemusicisintendedtobringplayintoourlives.Welearnsomemusic,andthenweplayit.Butalso,weplayWITHit.Weplaywithtime–learningaboutspacing,cadencing,breathing,rubato.Weplaywithinterpretation:mood,tempo,colour.Weimprovise–playingaroundwithinventingnewtunes,playingwithre-harmonizationandnewbeatswhenplayingfamiliartunes.Sometimesweplaywithlanguageandconceptsaswelearntoconnecttomusicmoredeeply.
Yes,weplay-ANDweconnect.Weconnectwithcomposersandtheircontextinplaceandtime.Weconnectwiththepieceofmusicasweprepareit,andwiththeaudienceasweperformit.Asteachersweconnectwithstudentsasweworktogethertoformpartnershipsofmutualtrustandrespect.
So,gettingpaidtoplayandmakefunconnections.It’smusicalLego!
I’msogratefultotheRoyalConservatoryofMusicforcreatingthisaward.Itacknowledgestheworkofsomanymusicteachersacrossthecountry.Gratefulalsofortheconservatoriesinthiscountrythatprovideguidanceandstructureintheworkwedoasprivateteachers.Whatavaluableresource!

PianistAlbertChenwontheWesternAreaYoungArtistCompetitioninthespringof2018.Asix-concerttourwasorganizedwithChenperformingthreeconcertsinManitoba—Gimli(September15th),Winnipeg(September23rd)andKillarney(September26th)—followedbythreeinSaskatchewan—Regina(September28th),SwiftCurrent(September29th)andSaskatoon(September30th).AseventhconcerthadbeenplannedforRosetown,Saskatchewan.Unfortunately,thelogisticsofaconcerttourintwoprovincesandlastingforfewweeksbecametoodifficult.ThisisanareaofconcernthatshouldbeaddressedbyCFMTA/FCAPMpriortothe2020tour.

Asanemergingpianistgrowingupintoday’ssystemofclassicalmusic,competitionsformearethenormwhileconcertsarerareandfewinbetween.IoftenlookbackonmyyearrealizingthateverysingleperformanceIhavedonewereforcompetitions.Therefore,therehasalwaysbeenacertainsenseofrestrictionwhenIperform.TheWesternYoungArtistConcertTourhasbeenaneye-openingexperienceformeandhaschangedthewayIviewmusic.Itmademerealizethattheultimaterewardtoperformingistheactofsharingyourmusicwithotherpeoplealongwiththefreedomtoexpresswhateveryouwish.IexperiencedthisasImademywayacrossManitobaandSaskatchewanwithmyparents,performingandmeetingmanywonderfulpeoplewhilesharingthesimplegiftofmusicalongtheway.

Scarlatti.Sincethechurchwasincloseproximitytotheuniversity,Iwasgladtoseeafewfriendswhocametotheconcert.IwouldliketothankAnnetteHayfororganizingthisconcertandallthepianoteachersinWinnipegwhocontributesomuchtothevibrantclassicalmusiccommunitythatwehaveinthiscity.
ThemainlengthofthetourcamethefollowingweekwiththefirstconcertbeinginKillarneyManitoba,alittlelessthantwohoursawaysouthwestfromWinnipeg.ItwasmyfirsttimevisitingKillarneyandIdidnotknowwhattoexpect.LittledidIknowthatIwouldmeetsomeofthekindestandmostgenerouspeopleIhaveevermet.MyparentsandIwerefirstgreetedbyMarlaWintersandhermother,whogenerouslytookustothelocaldinerfora“pre-concert”meal.Afterwards,wewentovertothechurchandIhadsometimetoacquaintmyselfwiththepiano.Itwasaveryspaciousandbeautifulchurch,withwonderfulacousticsandatmosphere.Astheconcerttimeapproached,Iwentbackstageastheystartedtolettheaudiencein.Atfirst,Iwasnotsureifitwasbecausetherewasanothereventgoingonatthechurch,becauseIheardalotofpeopleinthemainhallway.AsIwalkedonstage,Iwaswelcomedwithawarmcrowdandwasoverwhelmedbytheturnoutofthisconcert,withmuchthankstoMarlaWintersandAprilGibsonwhoorganizedthissectionofthetour.Allofasudden,IfeltthisnewsourceofenergyasIsatinfrontofthepianowithanaudienceofover100people.Iabsorbedthisenergyandturneditintoafantasticperformance.IwasoverwhelmedbytheamountofsupportIreceivedasItalkedtomanywonderfulmusicteachersandstudentsatthereceptionfollowingtheconcert.Itwasareallynicefeelingtoknowthatpeopleappreciatewhatyoudoandreallyenjoyit.Afterthereception,myparentsandIwerewarmlyinvitedovertoAprilGibsonandherhusband’shomeforthenight.Wewouldliketogiveahugethankyoutothemforbeingsuchkind,welcoming,andgeneroushosts.TheymadeusfeelrightathomeandmyparentsandIarereallyappreciativefortheirgenerosityandhospitality.
Reginawasournextdestination.ThedrivetoSaskatechewanwaspeacefulandtranquil,withthenarrowroadsurroundedbyavastexpanseofprairie,haystacks,cows,horses,andtheopenbluesky.Itwasmyfirsttime
visitingSaskatchewanasadestination.AswearrivedinRegina,Iwasamazedbythesimplebeautyofthecity.ItwassurroundedwithnatureandtheweatherwasslightlywarmerthanwhatitwasinWinnipegatthetime,whichfeltgreat.Ididnothaveaconcertthatday,somyparentsandItooksometimetoexplorethecity.WetookawalkaroundWascanaLake,whichhadastunningviewwiththecoloursofautumnvibratingthroughoutthepark.Wealsotookavisitdowntownandwassurprisedbyhowcleanandwell-manageditwas.Overall,itwasagreatdaytounwindandgetreadyforthenextsegmentofthetour.Thenextday,IwasinterviewedbyFrenchCBConTV,whichwasanamazingexperienceforme.IwouldliketothankMarilynKingforsettingupthisgreatopportunity,whichallowedthetourandorganizationtogainsomepublicity.TheconcertintheeveningtookplaceatthehomeofKarenFrandsen,whohadawonderfulself-builtstudiowithveryniceacoustics.IwouldliketothankKarenforlettingususeherstudioandSandraKerrfororganizingtheconcertinRegina.Thepianohadgreatpowerinitsbassthatseemstofilltheentirestudiowithawonderfulwashofsound.Itwasnicetomeetallthemusicteachersandstudentswhocametothishouseconcert.
AfterRegina,wemadeourwaytoSwiftCurrent.Aswearrived,thefirstsnowflakesoftheseasonbegantodriftdownjustaswemadeittoourhotel.TheconcerttookplaceinaverybeautifulchurchwithagorgeousYamahagrand.Icouldfeelthequalityofthisinstrumentrightfromtheveryfirstnote,asitseemedtorespondtoeverysubtleadjustmentandcouldproduceboththemostbeautifulpianissimosandthegrandestfortes.Iwasverygladtoseemanyyoungpianostudentswhowereencouragedbytheirteacherstocometothisconcert.Myperformancewentsmoothly,withthepianoproducingeverycolourIwanted.Afterwards,theorganizergotallthekidsuptothefronttogivethemSmarties,whichIthoughtwasagreatwaytoinspirethem;aliveperformancewithsomechocolateafterwards.Again,IwouldliketothankMarilynKingfororganizingthisconcertandtheinterviewinRegina.Icouldreallytellthatthiscommunitycherishesmusiceducationfortheiryouth,whichisreallyimportantintoday’ssociety.

withagreatview.IcouldfeelthatthetourhastakenitstollasIwasextremelytiredaswearrived.Theconcertwasat3pmintheafternoonandIrememberedthinkingtomyselfthatplayingtheProkofievwasgoingtobelikeclimbingMountEverestafterrunningamarathon.Luckily,thischurchhadanamazingYamahaconcertgrand,whichreallyinspiredmeduringmyperformance.Icouldfeelitssofttouchproducinganangelictonequalityanditsrawpowerinallregistersofthekeyboard,allowingmetoexpressthetranquilityofScarlatti,lyricismofChopin,grandeuroftheWaldstein,anduntamedcharacteroftheProkofiev.IwouldliketothankKathleenSolosefororganizingthisconcertinSaskatoon.ItwasafantasticwaytoendthetourandIfeltasenseofreliefmixedwithatouchofsadnessasIrealizedthatthetourwasofficiallyoverandIwouldhavetogobacktobiochemistryclassat8:30amthenextmorning.IhavegottentoenjoyperformingsomuchonthistourthatIdidnotwantittoend.
Overall,ithasbeenanincredibleexperienceforme.OpportunitieslikethisareextremelyvaluableforyoungmusicianslikemeandIamverythankfultohavebeenabletogoonthisconcerttour.Icouldnothaveimaginedthatthistourwouldturnouttobeoneofthemainmusicalhighlightsofmycareerthusfarandhavesuchahugeimpactonme.MyparentsandIhadagreattimeandcouldnothaveaskedforabetterwaytospendthepreciouslittletimewehavetogether.Iwouldliketothankeveryonewhowaspartofthistourforshowingsuchhospitality,generosity,
kindness,andwarmth.IreallycherishtheexperiencesandmemoriesImadeonthistourandlookforwardtocontinuingmymusicaljourneyinthefuture.
