The 25th Junior Common Room Com- miee (JCRC) took their first step to- wards a new journey on the night of 27th September 2012. The night began with a speech from our Senior Hall Fellow, Professor Eddie. He spoke, in glowing terms , of the 24th JCRC; in parcular, our President, Chia Jia Da. All throughout his term, he was well liked and respected by all whom he worked and interacted with. Profes- sor Eddie had nothing but praise for him, even borrowing a Chinese phrase to highlight Jia Da’s excellent leadership skills. It translates roughly to “As long as he is in charge, I have no worries.” A plaque was then presented to each 24th JCRC member in recognion of their contribuons to Hall V. The 25th Junior Common Room Com-mittee (JCRC) took their first step to-wards a new journey on the night of 27th September 2012.

The night began with a speech from our Senior Hall Fellow, Professor Eddie. He spoke, in glowing terms , of the 24th JCRC; in particular, our President, Chia Jia Da. All throughout his term, he was well liked and respected by all whom he worked and interacted with. Profes-sor Eddie had nothing but praise for him, even borrowing a Chinese phrase to highlight Jia Da’s excellent leadership skills. It translates roughly to “As long as he is in charge, I have no worries.” A plaque was then presented to each 24th JCRC member in recognition of their contributions to Hall V.

An informal handing over ceremony fol-lowed, in which each portfolio handed their duties over to their successors in the 25th JCRC by presenting a gift to them. The gifts symbolized the respon-

sibilities of each position and their indis-pensability to the committee.

This was then followed by a speech by Tan Ming Jie, the newly elected Presi-dent of the 25th JCRC. Jia Da then hand-ed the hall flag over to Ming Jie, a sym-bolic act marking both the end as well as the beginning of a new era. Ming Jie next led the 25th JCRC in reciting the pledge, promising their commitment to-wards the Hall and its residents.

A flame was then passed among all of the 25th JCRC, representing their burn-ing passion to serve and lead.

For the 24th JCRC, the night allowed them to reflect upon their term of of-fice with pride and nostalgia. As for the 25th JCRC, it marked the beginning of a new phase to carry on a perpetual goal together– to bring Hall V to greater heights than ever before.

What comes to mind when you see cheery little pumpkin lanterns around and small baskets of candies, free for you to dip into in Hall V? Yes, it was time for Halloween!

Aside from decorations, JCRC mem-bers also dressed up with pumpkin hair bands and monster hats during the ac-tual event, on 18th October. Several res-idents even made the effort to dress up as ghouls, catching many unsuspecting residents unawares when they crept up behind them!

A unique feature this year was that all participants have to pair up to take part in the station games, to foster stronger bonds among residents.

The event kicked off with the opening game, Ready Nescafe. 4 pairs were cho-sen, who each had to finish drinking two cans of Nescafe and transfer the empty can from one table to another. The win-ning pair walked away with two bags of Nescafe white coffee.

The station which drew plenty of laugh-ter was ‘Stack the Candies’. Players had to hold an ice-cream stick in their mouths, and balance 5 sweets on them for 3 seconds. Interestingly, it had to be done while looking at each other. It was common to see residents doubling over in laughter the moment they caught their partner’s eyes.

Over at the cultural room, participants engaged in a game called ‘This Blows’. The pair must inflate a balloon each, and then release the air from the bal-

loon to blow 40 cups off a table.

The JCRC room, on the other hand, was temporarily transformed into a “bowling alley”, albeit with twists to the conven-tional game. Aside from being played in the dark, the person rolling the ball had to do it with his or her back facing the bowling pins.

The most challenging game of the night, however, was undoubtedly ‘Lollipop’. It depended a lot on cooperation between the pair and some considerable balanc-ing skills, proving to be quite daunting for many.

To round off the event, a lucky draw was held to reward the players who fin-ished all the station games. The winning pairs won hampers containing assorted sweets – a dream come true for those with a sweet tooth.

This year’s Halloween indeed injected the fun and excitement associated with trick and treating into all Fivers. Just re-member to brush your teeth properly after all that sugar!

On 26 October, the 25th JCRC or-ganized the final event of the se-mester, Muggers’ Night. The night saw many old school uniforms being paraded, as Fivers enthusiastically dressed according to the theme, “Reliving the Good Old Days”.

A pre-event contest was held this year, the "Spot the Mugger" Con-test, commencing three days be-fore the actual event. The task was to spot our 25th JCRC President, Tan Ming Jie in his school uniform, take a photo with him and upload it on Facebook. There were 3 winners per day and each of them won a $5 popular voucher.

The Jam Band was the first per-former for the night. Sam Wei Jing, the Jam Band captain last year, led three other juniors on stage to perform the first song, ‘You and I’ by Ingrid Michalson. Jan Soh and Dorothea Leong played the Ukulele alongside lead singers Sam Wei Jing and Meiji. The second song ‘Here Without You’ by 3 Doors Down, was delivered by He Yang on the keyboard, Denise Png the drum-mer, Aleem the bass, Sam Wei Jing the guitarist and Akshay Raman the

lead singer. It was a flawless perfor-mance which hyped up the mood at the beginning of the event.

Next, a video put together by the JCRC was screened featuring vari-ous Fivers sharing their secrets to overcoming stress. Some meth-ods were funny, while others were practical, providing a much-needed morale boost for everyone.

Then, residents were invited to par-ticipate in games conducted by the emcees. Even our Hall Fellow, Prof Dinesh, joined in the fun.

Of course, any event would not be complete without the crowning of the best dressed pair! The title was claimed by Natasha Lee and Felix Ong from the blue block, who both won a $15 Popular voucher each.

When asked which part of the event they enjoyed most, Marga-ret Ee and Ian Tang from blue block unanimously replied “Jam band!”. Margaret added that she was par-ticularly impressed with drummer Denise Png as “it is really rare to see such a cool female drummer.”

At the end of Muggers’ Night, eve-ryone was given a bowl of bean curd and an exam goodie bag which included consumables like cof-fee, instant noodles and crackers to prepare for the many sleepless nights ahead. Good luck Fivers!

Food has always been an integral part of the Asian lifestyle, serving as a tool for building stronger communal bonds. Here in Hall 5, we are of no exception.

This year’s Block Supper was held af-ter the main event lineup for Muggers’ Night. It was a great move since it built upon the enthusiasm of Muggers’ Night and made block supper all the more lively and exciting.

The block committees of each block all prepared food for their block residents a few days in advance. They even made the effort to ask their residents for their food preferences.

The supper was a great opportunity for residents in each block to get to know one another, especially in getting to know our exchange and foreign stu-dents. It was indeed heartwarming to

see how welcoming Fivers were.

By the end of the night, each resident returned to their rooms, stomach full of not only food, but also of unforgettable warmth and happiness.

Food, Glorious Food!

Held on 11th October, Sporec Day is a night where all Fivers can get to try their hands at the sports and recreational games that will be played during the up-coming Inter Hall Games (IHG).

It was also a good chance for captains to identify potential players to represent the Hall. Above all, it provided a great opportunity for all Fivers to interact and take a break from academics.

Games that were played in the Confer-ence Room included Chinese Chess, In-ternational Chess, Weiqi, Othello, Bog-gle and Scrabble. Darts was held in the

Recreational Room.

Selected sports were also featured, which included Rugby, Hockey, Soccer ,Water Polo and Table Tennis. Although many of the participants had never even picked up a hockey stick or had only kicked a ball around for the fun of it, they still tried their best and it was obvious enough that many Fivers had natural talent at the sports.

Here’s wishing all players the very best of luck for the upcoming IHG 2012/2013!
