1. Fathah2. Fathatain3. Dhammah4. Dhammatain5. Sukoon (and the letter before has a Fathah)6. Sukoon (and the letter before has a Dhammah)7. Sukoon (and the letter after is one of the Fat letters)

There are 3 instances where the letter Ra is pronounced light. If the letter Ra has either a:

و تن وانوان ساكThe rules of Noon Saakin and Tanween are studied together because the sound for both of these is the same.

Tanween is the addition of an “n” or “ ن ” sound at the end of a word

(that has a Fathah, Kasrah, or Dhammah) to make the “an”, “in” or “un” sound and comes at the end of the word (noon is not written).

اب كت اب كت اب كت اب كت اب كت اب كت

Recall that Noon Saakinah means a letter noon ( ن/ن ) that does not have any

vowel sign or has a Sukoon on it.

Noon Saakin can be in the middle of the word or at the end of the word.

The sound of Noon Saakinah or Tanween is

The sound of the letter Noon with a Sukoon on it, or the sound of the Tanween is divided into four groups depending on the letter that comes after it.

When any of the Throat letters come after Noon Sakinah ( ن ) or Tanween , the letter Noon is pronounced clearly.

Do not extend or stretch the sound of the letter Noon and do not make a nasal sound (Ghunnah).

This rule is called Izhaar. ظي عذاب ع ٱ نامت

This rule is called Izhaar.

دغاما

When any of the following letters come after Noon Sakinah or Tanween , the Noon sound is merged or joined with these letters.

رلمنوي

Idghaam means “to merge” or “to join”.

This rule only applies when Noon Sakinah or Tanween appears at the end of one

word and the next word start with ر ل م ن و ي

ر لوانIdghaam only comes in two words.

Page 12: Tajweed Rules for Qur an Recitation - img1.wsimg.com

12

دغاما

The rule of Idghaam can be divided into two groups:

1. Idghaam with Ghunnah (2 counts) يومن

2. Idghaam without Ghunnah لر

Recall that Ghunnah uses الخيشوم – the nasal passage. It is the nasal sound that comes from the nose. The tongue does not play any part in the articulation of this sound because “Ghunnah” is not a letter; it is just the nasal sound.

We already learnt that when is a Shaddah on either the letter Meem or the letter Noon, we read it with a Ghunnah. Now we will use Ghunnah for the letters Ya and Waow.

The Ghunnah sound is held (or stretched) for 2 counts.

If the letters ل or ر come after Noon Sakinah or Tanween, the Noon sound is merged into the next letterل or ر and is read

without Ghunnah.

There are four words in the Quran where the letters ي or و come after Noon Sakinah in the same

word. We will read these words without Ghunnah. This means that the Noon sound is read clearly.
