You have chosen to go to one of the world’s last remaining unspoiled

paradises so be ready for an adventurous and truly once-in-a-lifetime

experience! The striking panoramas of the Marquesas Islands are

unique in the world, and we offer several exciting shore excursions

so that you can fully experience the haunting beauty and rugged

scenery of this green and turquoise paradise. Be sure to bring insect

repellent and wear comfortable walking shoes. Transportation is

limited and very basic, usually off-road vehicles. On many tours

there will be no restroom facilities and in some ports, sport boats

will be used rather than the ship’s tenders so be prepared for some sea

spray. It is a good idea to have waterproof bags for camera equipment.

There are very few banks in the Marquesas, so make sure you

bring local Pacific Francs (exchange in Papeete) as there will be

many opportunities to purchase crafts from local artisans, who do

not accept credit cards or U.S. dollars.

The Marquesans speak very little English, but will make every effort

to transmit their knowledge and passion about their islands to you.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to open the ship’s marina in the

Marquesan ports, and Paul Gauguin’s watersports activities will not

be available until we return to the Society Islands. For the keen scuba

diver the only Marquesan port that offers diving is Nuku Hiva

(Taiohae), where a certified dive is operated through a local operator.

Atuona to Taaoa • HOA-2594 Duration: 3 Hours Price: $115.00 Transport: Off-Road Vehicle

Taaoa is about 7 miles southwest of Atuona on the coastal road.Several tribes once lived in Taaoa Valley, including the Tiu who arethe ancestors of most of the Hivaoan tribes. The archeological ruinscan be reached by off-road vehicle or on foot. Upeke CeremonialCenter is comprised of house platforms, a tohua, public and sacredmeae, and storage pits of breadfruit paste for feasts. The tohua wasrestored for the Third Festival of the Marquesas in 1991.

The remaining area is in the same state that archeologist RalphLinton found it in, in 1920. A tiki measuring 4 feet by 5 feet was found.Only the front part of the stone is carved. The eyes, part of the rightarm and the right ear are carved in bas-relief. According to Linton, this stone was an altar stone on which sacrificed victims were placedafter being killed at the tohua and carried up to the maea. Directlybelow the platform with the altar stone is an irregular round headcarved from a porous black volcanic stone. This stone is very easyto carry, so this may not be in its original position. On anotherplatform in the tohua section you can see a row of worked keetu slabs. One of them has some carved lines; the design is very difficult tosee in sunlight. Locals say it is a whale or canoe, but it is a tiki facein bas-relief.

please note: Access to the site involves a path over slippery stones andnegotiation of high stone steps up to the tiki. There will be 4 guests per vehicle.Insect repellent is highly recommended.

Helicopter Flightseeing • NHT-2053 Duration: 30 Minutes Price: $279.00Transport: Helicopter

This is certainly the best way to admire the wild beauty of theMarquesas Islands. The 20-minute helicopter flight allows you todiscover a succession of mountain peaks and long valleys bathedby large waterfalls nestled among them. One of the falls is theHakaui Waterfall, which is 1,148 feet (350 meters) tall – one of theworld’s tallest.

please note: Flights will be scheduled depending on the availability of thehelicopter as it operates transfer flights between the airport and the main villageand vice versa (delays and waiting time at the pier are common for those reasons).A minimum of 4 guests per flight is required to operate this tour. Helicopter isnot air-conditioned.

Scuba: Certified Dive • NHT-5965 Duration: 2 Hours Price: $80.00Transport: Zodiac or Local Boat

Another way to explore the beauty of Nuku Hiva is to discover itsunderwater world. The local dive operator will take divers to the tworock formations that serve as guardians for the entrance of the Bayof Taiohae.

The Marquesas don’t boast coral reefs, peaceful lagoons orcrystalline waters. The water is thick with plankton and rich in alluvium, and visibility is consequently reduced (10-20 meters). You may thinkit is a negative aspect but these conditions allow regular sightingsof unusual creatures, such as scalloped hammerheads and all kindof rays.

Since the Marquesan waters are devoid of any protective barrierreefs, divers should be prepared to cope with swell. Your dive willoperate at the exit of Taiohae Bay (dependent upon weatherconditions), near the area called the Hammerhead Sentry Point. The underwater topography echoes the steep basalt cliff. It plungesto a sandy bottom at 50 meters. The dive mainly consists ofswimming along the drop-off. It is usually the opportunity to meetsharks and rays. The area at the entrance of the bay, more exposedto the swell, is rather choppy compared to the calm waters insidethe bay. Visibility amounts to 15 meters in average, but can bereduced to 5 when current. The caverns by the wall form a goodhabitat for moray eels, scorpionfish and shells.

please note: The dive is available only to certified divers.

For those who really want to get away from it all, this exotic cruise

goes about as far as you can get. The preservation and remoteness

of the Austral Archipelago give these islands an authenticity to endear

the most adventurous visitors, while those in search of Polynesian

crafts will find some of the finest artistry in the islands. Best of all,

we’ve wisely timed our visit to coincide with the seasonal migration

of whales.

Then there are the Cook Islands which also exude the authentic

flavor of an old-time South Seas trading station. Rarotonga is a Tahiti

in miniature, with jagged peaks and deep green valleys, while the tiny

atoll of Aitutaki is one of the most vivid sights in the South Seas.

You’ll find unspoiled beaches, sparkling lagoons and radiant

sunsets in Fiji. Yet amid its wealth of natural beauty, Fiji’s true

magic lies in the diversity of its people – Melanesians, East Indians,

Micronesians and Europeans, each with a culture of their own. In

contrast, Tonga is the only South Pacific archipelago never brought

under foreign rule, and, as such, a repository of Polynesian culture

and tradition.

For dives within the no-decompression limits:• Single Dives – A minimum preflight surface interval of

12 hours is suggested• Repetitive Dives and/or Multiday Dives – A minimum

preflight surface interval of 18 hours is suggested

For dives requiring decompression stops:• A minimum preflight surface interval greater than

18 hours is suggested

With all dive tables and computers, no flying after diving recommendation can guarantee that decompression sickness willnever occur. These guidelines represent the best estimate presentlyknown for a conservative, safe surface interval for the vast majorityof divers. There may always be an occasional diver whose physiologicalmakeup or special dive circumstances result in decompressionsickness despite following the recommendations.

I’m already a PADI certified scuba diver and I’ve lost my certificationcard. Can I get another one and how long does it take?

To replace a lost card you can go to your local PADI Dive Center orResort, or you can go to the replacement card area at www.PADI.comIt takes about two weeks to replace a certification card so if you arediving sooner than that, have the PADI Dive Center or Resort you’rediving with call PADI. PADI will transmit your certification information. If you were certified after 1984 in PADI Asia Pacific, PADI Americas,PADI Canada, PADI International Limited or PADI Europe territory, through the computerized Dive-Check system at any time.

How long does it take to become a certified scuba diver?

PADI courses are performance-based, which means that you earnyour certification when you demonstrate that you’ve mastered therequired skills and knowledge. Because some learn faster than others, course duration varies. For example, the PADI Open Water Divercourse can be split into five or six sessions over as little as threedays to as much as six weeks.

How old do I have to be to become a certified diver?

You must be at least 10 years old to receive a Junior Open WaterDiver Certification. Ten- and 11-year-old Junior Open Water Diversmust dive with a certified parent, guardian or PADI Professional toa maximum depth of 40 feet (12 meters). Twelve- to 14-year-oldsmust dive with a certified adult. At age 15, the Junior Certificationupgrades to a regular Open Water Diver Certification.

Do I have to be a great swimmer to be certified as a PADI openwater diver?

No. You need to be a reasonably proficient swimmer and comfortablein the water. You must swim 200 yards/meters nonstop, without atime or specific stroke requirement or a 300-yard/meter swim withmask, fins and snorkel. You’ll also perform a 10-minute tread/float.

My ears hurt when I dive to the bottom of a pool. Won’t they hurtwhen I scuba dive?

Your ears hurt because of the water pressure on your eardrum. Inyour scuba course, you’ll learn simple techniques to equalize yourears to the surrounding pressure, much like you do when you landin an airplane.

I need vision correction. Is that a problem?

No. Wearing soft contact lenses shouldn’t be a problem while youdive. However, if you wear hard contacts, you’ll want to dive withgas permeable lenses. See your eye doctor for more information.Another option is to have prescription lenses put into your mask.See a PADI Professional about this service.

If I have been diving, how long should I wait before flying?

The dive medical community offers the following recommendationsfor flying after diving, whether you’re using the RDP, another tableor a dive computer:
