Aksai Chin is a vast high-altitude desertof salt that reaches heights up to 5,000 metres. Itcovers an area of 42,685 square kilometres of thedisputed territory. Geographically part of the TibetanPlateau, Aksai Chin is referred to as the Soda Plain.

    The region is almost uninhabited, has no permanentsettlements, and receives little precipitation as theHimalayan and other mountains block the rains fromthe Indian monsoon.

    Vozrozhdeniya Island, is a former island, now apeninsula, in the Aral Sea. It became a peninsula in2002, due to ongoing shrinkage of the Aral Sea.It isnow shared by Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Located inthe central Aral Sea, Vozrozhdeniya Island was one ofthe main laboratories and testing sites for the SovietUnion governments Microbiological Warfare Group. In1948, a top-secret Soviet bioweapons laboratory wasestablished here. Word of the island's danger wasfurther spread by Soviet defectors, including KenAlibek, the former head of the Soviet Union's

Itis thought that the waterway formed relatively recentlyin geologic time, with the Tigris and Euphrates originallyemptying into the Persian Gulf via a channel further tothe west. The Karun river, a tributary which joins thewaterway from the Iranian side, deposits large amountsof silt into the river; this necessitates continuousdredging to keep it navigable. The area is judged tohold the largest date palm forest in the world. In themid-1970s, the region included 17 to 18 million datepalms, an estimated one-fifth of the world's 90 million

    palm trees. But by 2002, war, salt, and pests had wipedout more than 14 million of the palms, including around9 million in Iraq and 5 million in Iran. Many of theremaining 3 to 4 million trees are in poor condition.
