Welcome all to the 2016-17 Winter sports season. We’re looking forward to a fun fi lled season.

A big thank you to Gameday Media! They did a wonderful job of putting the media guide together, and were very professional. Also, thank you to all of our SPONSORS for their support of our athletic programs, and for purchasing ads in the media guide you are currently holding.

Please patronize the businesses and services advertising in our media guide and let them know how much we appreciate their support. Be sure and tell them

“I saw you in the media guide!”Second, a high-level athletic program does not successfully take place without the hard work of our student athletes. We want to send thanks to all of our athletes for their superb effort. Your support and service of our student athletes and the athletic program are second to none, and is greatly appreciated!

Finally, a huge ‘thank you’ to the families and fans of the players. Being a parent of a player is a huge commitment and responsibility. Among rides to and from practice, carpooling to games, fundraising, and volunteering, it is a huge tax on your time and energy and we truly appreciate it. Without all of your effort and consideration, none of this success would be possible!

Go Firebirds!

Matt became West’s head coach in 2014-15 having inherited a team severely depleted by graduation. Of the 1534 points scored by the 2013-14 team, per-sonnel responsible for just 4 of those points returned for the 2014-15 campaign. Starting from scratch Rooks has since rebuilt the program with all three teams; freshman, junior varsity, and varsity posting winning records in 2015-16. The varsity squad fi nished in a tie for second in the GMC, ranked in the Cincinnati D-1 top ten, and posted a 15-9 record. Rook’s previous, and fi rst, head coaching op-portunity came at Wyoming H.S. When he arrived at Wyoming the Cowboys were coming off a 2-19 season and two years later they posted a record of 22-4, had won the Cincinnati Hills Conference championship, and had progressed to the district fi nals of the division II tournament. Rooks contributions to this success were acknowledged by press and peers. He was named the Cincinnati Enquirer D-2 coach of the year and voted the coach of the year by both the District 16 Coaches Association, and the Cincinnati Hills League coaches. Prior to becoming

a head coach Rooks served his coaching apprenticeship at Moeller high school. He coached the Moeller freshmen for eight years, and for his fi nal seven years also served as a varsity assistant to Moeller head coach Carl Kremer. He was an integral part of the Moeller staff when the Crusaders won the 2007 Ohio Division 1 championship. Rooks went directly into teaching and coaching following an outstanding college playing career. He played four seasons for Bethel College, Kentucky (2000-2004) where he still ranks third in career scoring with 2183 points and is high on the Bethel career lists for both assists and rebounds. Rooks is currently teaching physical education classes at two Lakota el-ementary schools, Endeavor, and Woodland.

great passing angles. Magic’s success has opened the door for all sorts of point guards. The key to a strong point guard today is leadership, passing, and running the team.

Power Forward (PF): The power forward on a basketball team is usually responsible for rebounding and

some scoring in the paint. A power forward should be big and strong and able to clear out some space under the basket. Many great power forwards in the game today do not score a lot of points, but lead their team in rebounds. Power forwards are often good shot blockers as well.

Small Forward (SF): Along with the shooting guard, the small forward is often

the most versatile player on the basketball team. They

should be able to help with ball handling, make an outside shot, and get rebounds. The small forward is often a great defensive player as well. The combination of height and quickness can allow them to defend a number of positions and take on the best scorer on the opposing team. On many teams today the small forward and the shooting guard are almost the same position and are called “wing” players.

blocker. On many teams the center is the fi nal line of defense. Many of basketball’s greatest players (Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal) have been centers. A strong center presence was long considered the only way to win an NBA championship. In modern times, many teams have won with other great players (Michael Jordan), but a strong center is still a prized basketball position on any basketball team.

Point Guard (PG): The point guard is the team leader and play caller on the basketball court. A point guard needs good ball handling skills, passing skills as well as strong leadership and decision making skills. Traditionally basketball point guards were small, fast players and

this is still often the case. However, Magic Johnson changed the way point guards were used. He was a big 6-8 player that used his height and size to get

Shooting Guard (SG): The shooting guard in basketball has the main responsibility of making long outside shots including

the three-point shot. The shooting guard also should be a good passer and able to

help the point guard with the ball handling. Shooting guards are often the top scorer

on a team. Perhaps the best shooting guard in the history of basketball was Michael Jordan. Jordan could do it all, from scoring to defense to rebounding. It’s this versatility that makes a great shooting guard, but all shooting guards should be able to extend the defense with their outside shot.

Center (C): The center is usually the biggest or tallest member of the basketball team. In the NBA, many centers are 7 feet tall

or taller. The center can be a big scorer, but also needs to be a strong rebounder and shot

MAN-TO-MAN: In man-to-man defense each player is responsible to cover one player on the other team. They follow this player wherever they go on the court.

ZONE: In zone defense, players have certain positions or areas of the court they cover. The guards usually play at the top of the key with the forwards playing closer to the basket and on opposite sides. The center usually plays in the middle of the key. However, there are a wide variety of zone defenses and combinations of zone and man-to-man that basketball teams play. Teams will often switch defenses around during a basketball game to see which works best against a particular opponent.

TEAM ROSTER

Andy has been the girls basketball head coach at Lakota West since the school was estab-lished in 1997 and has since built a program that’s earned state and national recognition. His 2014-15 team finished the season as the Ohio Division 1 State Champions with rank-ings of 20th and 26th in the nation by ESPN and USA Today respectively. They were also the Greater Miami Conference Champions and the Cincinnati Metro Champions (Cincinnati Enquirer poll) after ending the season with a 28-2 record. These accomplishments are just the most recent in a long string of successes which include three OHSAA Division 1 Final Four appearances, 5 GMC championship titles, 6 district cham-pionships, and 13 seasons ranked among the top 10 in the greater Cincinnati area (Enquirer coaches poll). Tony Bradberry // HEAD COACHCoach Bradberry is no stranger to the Lakota West program. While a wrestler in high school, Bradberry was a three-time GMC Champion, three-time sectional champion, two time district champion and a three-time state qualifi er placing third in the state (see photo above) his senior season. Bradberry continued his wrestling suc-cess at Ashland University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree in May 2010. While at Ashland, he was a national qualifi er, Academic All-American, team captain and a three-time FILA University Greco-Roman All-American. Since graduating from Ashland, Bradberry has been an assistant wres-tling coach at Oak Hills High School, a volunteer coach at Lakota West, head wrestling coach of Southwest Ohio Wrestling Club and most recently, the Varsity Head Coach at Lebanon High School (’12-’14). Bradberry achieved great success at Lebanon increasing their number of wrestlers each season and coaching two of the highest

team fi nishes at the conference meet in the last decade. Over the course of two years, Lebanon had 3 GWOC champions, 16 sectional placers, 10 district qualifi ers, 4 district placers and 2 state qualifi ers. In his fi rst two years at Lakota West, Bradberry has led the Firebirds to an 16-7 dual record, a runner-up fi nish in the GMC (2015), and two sectional championships. Last season, he had two wrestlers who both advanced and placed at the OHSAA State Championships (Tim Tanner-Blair 4th, 285lbs & Drew Fenton 8th, 220lbs).
