ASHRAE COK 2016-2017

President’s Message By: Trapper Wilson It’s time to kick off another ASHRAE year in Central Oklahoma! I have been preparing for my year of service as ASHRAE Central OK President this summer and reflecting on my experiences in this organization. I joined Central OK ASHRAE in 2003. At that time there was an incredible amount of experience and tenure within the membership relative to the YEA crowd. As John Semtner has stated before, we were fortunate to serve with some of the “giants” in ASHRAE like Bob Vermillion, Tino Mendez, Harry Roundtree, John Harrod and several others. We’re fortunate to still have some of that experience around today. Tino and John regularly attend Board of Governor meetings and Chapter meetings, and both are invaluable advisors to our Chapter. For me, one of the most exciting things about Central OK ASHRAE is the commitment from our younger members. There is enthusiasm and energy at our meetings and social events that is encouraging and fun to be around. In recent years we have had so many people step up and fill some big shoes to maintain Central OK ASHRAE as one of the top Chapters in the Country. Everyone involved makes a difference. So be proud Central OK, you make this Chapter great! This is a big year for Central OK. It is our year to host the Region VIII CRC, which will take place April 27th – 29th. This is going to be a great opportunity to show Region VIII why OKC is a great place to live and work. The CRC committee has been meeting for almost a year now, and preparations are well under way. Thank you to past Presidents Joe Sanders and John Semtner for taking on this event, along with many others who are doing double duty between Chapter and CRC responsibilities. Listed here is the CRC website so please sign up! http://ashraecok.org/CRC2017 My goals for the year are to increase general membership participation, continue to innovate and expand our Research Promotion efforts, and support the preparations for a successful CRC. All of these things have something in common…YOU! I’m hopeful you will take some time this year to volunteer your time, donate to RP, or in some way support the Chapter. If everyone could just commit ONE thing the impact would be tremendous. Our DRC (Director and Regional Chair) has challenged all Chapter Presidents in Region VIII to “Leave the Chapter

better than you found it.” Coming off such a successful couple of years I have to admit I’m feeling the pressure to

leave this Chapter better than I found it. We’ve got such a great Chapter it’s hard to imagine what we can improve

on. However, with the team of people who have volunteered to serve, I’m confident we will make an impact and

bring more value to the Membership. Thank you to everyone who sacrifices your time to volunteer for Central OK

ASHRAE. I’m looking forward to serving all of you.

Sincerely, Trapper Wilson ASHRAE COK President 2016-2017

Chapter Technology Transfer (CTT) By: Andy Donehue

We have a great schedule of programs planned for this year. We are excited about the upcoming year! Our first meeting will be at the SMACNA Testing Facility located at 3801 Willow Springs in Oklahoma City. Eli P. Howard III will be our presenter and will be discussing the changes in SMACNA Standards. We will be going over the changes in HVAC Duct Construction Standard (ANSI), the Thermoset FRP Duct Construction Standard (ANSI), the Fire, Smoke & Radiation Damper Manual, and the HVAC Air Duct Leakage Test Manual (ANSI) revisions and how this affects ASHRAE Standard 90.1 & 189.1. Additionally, the inclusion in the 2018 International Mechanical Code/2018 Uniform

Mechanical Code of the SMACNA Phenolic Duct Construction Standard (ANSI) brings a new air distribution system material to the marketplace. Learn the basics on the material, including joint/seam types; limitations and common fabrication techniques. Eli P. Howard III is the Executive Director of Technical Services of SMACNA. Eli Howard has the overall responsibilities of more than 30+ SMACNA Technical and ANSI Standards related to the HVAC and Sheet Metal Industry. He is a member of five ASHRAE Technical Committees. He has additional responsibilities as SMACNA Liaison to NFPA 90A & 90B, CSI, USGBC, ICC and IAPMO. Prior to joining SMACNA he was Manager of Technical Program Development for NEMI providing technical assistance to contractors in energy engineering and IAQ technologies. His experience also includes work with Marriott International as Mechanical Engineer for design/construction of hotels in the United States, Hong Kong and Poland. Mr. Howard holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Allegheny College. If you have any ideas for events, want to get involved, or if you want to sponsor an event please contact me. I can be

reached at 405-317-0552 or [email protected].

Student Activities By: Madison Schultz

Our first Student Activities event was at OCCC on August 25. We spoke to the OCCC Engineering Club about ASHRAE and what an ASHRAE engineer does. I would like to thank Jeff Forman for attending the event with me and Mechanical Sales Midwest Inc. for their generous sponsorship of lunch.

I am pleased to announce that ASHRAE members Rafael Prado from Guernsey and Tanner Jones from Engineered Equipment Inc. will be joining the Student Activities Committee this year! Look for more exciting events to come! We are always looking for more ASHRAEers to join SA as regular committee members or one-time volunteers. Membership Promotion By: Daniel Brazeale

“ASHRAE Membership Benefits” While we’ve experienced two solid years with positive increase in membership I feel this year will be the most challenging while I’ve filled the position of Membership Promotion. With that said I’m looking forward to the challenge in finding new members for ASHRAE’s Central Oklahoma Chapter. In order to drum up more interest I challenge each of you to bring a different guest (Non-Member) to each meeting throughout the year.

Joining ASHRAE has a variety of benefits! As you’ll see this coming year one of the largest benefits is the ability to network and connect with peers and colleagues in our marketplace. Another benefit that isn’t as well known is access to valuable information. ASHRAE provides discounts to members on literature in the ASHRAE bookstore, develops Standards for our industry, and publishes the ASHRAE Journal every month with technical features. Not to mention they send an updated copy of the ASHRAE Handbook (Rotating between Refrigeration, Fundamentals, HVAC Applications, and HVAC Systems and Equipment) each year. Ultimately taking advantage of all the benefits ASHRAE has to offer will help you grow personally and professionally. As we kick off this New Year it is our Chapter’s goal to try and increase membership. One of the avenues we are going to pursue is to attract more individuals from contractor’s offices. If you know of anyone that would benefit from ASHRAE please send me their contact information. Another aspect to Membership is keeping our roster updated. Please let me know if someone you know has moved out of our chapter, left the industry, or has passed away. Additionally, if you need help registering for membership, renewing your membership or simply want to chat feel free to email or call. Daniel Brazeale can be reached at 405-464-3677 or [email protected]

Research Promotion Contributions By: Chris Dolan

Thank you to all of the individuals and organizations that allowed us to exceed our RP goal last year! Our goal this year is to have close to 100% participation from the chapter members. We will also be introducing a new event to our schedule…. A Poker Tournament! More details to follow, but start practicing up on your Texas Hold ‘em skills! The golf tournament is already full! We look forward to seeing everyone at Kickingbird September 12. Even if you aren’t playing, please come by and participate in the putting contest or the silent auction. If you didn’t get a chance to be a sponsor in the golf tournament, you will have another chance during the Second Annual Sporting Clays Event. If anyone would like to help coordinate this event, please let me know. I look forward to another great

year for Research Promotion, and thanks in advance for all of your donations. Chris Dolan Office can be reached at 405-525-7722 or [email protected]

Honor & Awards Recognized Service By: Tino Mendez

We are starting a new ASHRAE year soon and we need to recognize the individuals that have served our Chapter in the past. Service need not be moving through the chairs and providing the leadership to take care of business such as providing educational and social opportunities for our members to advance in our chosen field. There are individuals that serve in Boards and Committees outside of ASHRAE that we want to recognize as providing a service to the community and in so doing advance the arts and sciences of interest to all of us.

If you are, or know someone that is, involved in any activity that fits the description, let me know.

Tino Mendez can be reached at 405-590-4479 or [email protected]

Refrigeration Region 8 CRC Award By: Jason Keyes

As we begin a new ASHRAE year I am looking forward another term as Refrigeration Chair. Each year I typically begin my duties by soliciting ideas from the membership for refrigeration tour ideas and guess what, this year is no different. With two great tours last year, one to the OSU central plant and another to the COOP Brewery, it will be difficult to top but here on the Refrigeration Squad we aim high! Please feel free to call or email with any suggestions you may have for a tour

or tours this year. There has already been discussion of a food processing/cold storage facility and perhaps combining it with a YEA or other member event. My goal each year is to help make sure that the refrigeration tour is something our members can look forward to and come away feeling it was well worth their time. Help me help you and let me know what you think! Jason Keyes can be reached at 405-948-1794 or [email protected]

Historian Message The Life and Times of Louis C. Nettleship By: Dusty Stoabs

The Life and Times of Louis C. Nettleship

Earlier this year, I had the honor and privilege of writing a biography of Louis C. Nettleship, the 2nd member of the Central Oklahoma chapter to be inducted into our Chapter’s Hall of Fame. The book was compiled from chapter archives originally kept by the late Bobbie Vermillion, who was a chapter historian and a personal friend of Louis Nettleship, chapter archives from the late Bill Collins that are currently kept by Alan Loeffler, our most recent past chapter historian, documents kept by Harry Rountree, and documents provided by Louis’ son, Bruce Nettleship and the Nettleship family. Louis was born in 1912 in Prairie Township (Fayetteville), Arkansas. He attended the University of Arkansas at the age of 16. After graduation, Louis went to work in Oklahoma City for Frick Company, a manufacturer of refrigerating, air-conditioning, and farm and sawmill machinery. That first job kicked-off what became a successful career as a Refrigeration Engineer that would lead him to co-owning his own company, serving as the President of the Central Oklahoma ASHRAE Chapter, winning the Golden Gavel, authoring portions of the ASHRAE Handbooks, being published in the ASHRAE Journal, receiving the Grade of ASHRAE Fellow, and ultimately the Society’s prestigious Distinguished 50-Year Member Award. I highly encourage you to read about this man’s life and accomplishments. The book is 63 pages, 8.5x11 format, filled with photos, dates, stories, and humor. By studying the life of one of the pillars of the Central Oklahoma Chapter, you can learn keys to being a successful leader in ASHRAE chapter operations and, through over 50 excerpts from Louis’ personal writings, see how his life was enriched by maintaining strong family ties. The book also includes an appendix with over 100 pages of historical documents to support the timeline and record of events. A soft-cover copy of the book can be ordered through the Chapter for $20 each, with an abbreviated amount of appendix material. The electronic copy, with the full appendix, is free of charge and available for immediate download at our History page: http://ashraecok.org/content.php?page=History
