Leaving a Legacy

Time seems to be going to at an

alarmingly fast rate these days.

Everyone tells me “just wait until

you’re older.” But honestly, I

can’t imagine it getting faster. It seems to me that just

yesterday we were celebrating Mother’s Day, but as I

write this, Father’s Day is just around the corner.

Good bye May, hello June.

I have to say, I am blessed with exceedingly good

parents. Celebrating each of them on their respective

holidays, is a joy to me. My parents poured a whole

lot of goodness into me as they raised me; they taught

me the love of stories, the love of music, that a dog

makes a great companion, that the only way to have a

friend is to be a friend. And most importantly, they

taught me that God sent His only Son to lay down

His life in sacrifice so that I might be forgiven and

made new. They taught me that life in a community

of faith is fun, encouraging and will give you more

blessings than you can count.

Maybe it’s because time is passing so quickly these

days that I’ve been thinking a lot about the idea of

legacy. My folks have left me a great legacy – and I

am grateful that they are not finished building that

legacy yet!

Whether we have children or not, all of us are

building a legacy, in our interactions with each other

and with those we come across each day in the world

outside our walls, in the choices we make each day –

the choice to speak kind words or harsh words, the

choice to use the gifts we have been given in order to

bless others, the choice to be generous with our time

and our treasures. As individuals and as a community

of faith, we are building a legacy.

We have to ask ourselves what we want that legacy to

be. The time will continue to go quickly and if we

don’t figure out how to use it well, it will be gone in

the blink of an eye.

As we come up to the celebration of Father’s Day, think about the

legacy your father has passed on to you. What was good about it?

What was not-so-good? What would you change? And then ask

yourself what your legacy will be. What do you hope to pass on to

the next generation, to your friends, to your neighbors, to those

who you may never know by name, but will inherit the world you

leave behind?

As The Message translation of the Bible puts

it, “We pray that you’ll live well for the

Master, making him proud of you as you

work hard in his orchard. As you learn more

and more how God works, you will learn how

to do your work. We pray that you’ll have the

strength to stick it out over the long haul –

not the grim strength of gritting your teeth but the glory-strength

God gives. It is strength that endures the unendurable and spills

over into joy, thanking the Father who makes us strong enough to

take part in everything bright and beautiful that he has for us.”

Colossians 1:10-12 MSG.

At the beginning of May, Sarah Jess the daughter

of Susan and Ian Jess went for a vacation in Abu

Dhabi, UAE. She was only away for a week and a

half but after a long flight she wasted no time and

managed to stay very busy seeing all the sights. The

highlights of her trip included a tour of the local

mosque, a desert safari trip, which included sand

dune riding, sand surfing and a camel ride. She also

visited Dubai, where she toured the biggest mall in

the world, saw Palm Island and had dinner in the

lounge at the top of Burj Khalifa, the tallest building

in the world. Overall, it was a really great

experience and the people and the culture were very

unique and made for a very memorable vacation.

On Sunday, May 4, Molly and Mike Harvey and

Molly’s brother Mac Mackay, who lives in Halifax,

attended Knox Presbyterian Church, Stratford. They

had been invited to attend the 170th Anniversary

Sunday service and celebration lunch. Molly and

Mac’s father was the minister there from 1950-61.

They were pleased to meet one of their former

elementary school teachers, a cub leader and some

of their contemporaries who still worship at Knox.

The lovely buffet lunch was organized by a friend

of Felicity Alexander’s who attends Knox.

If you haven’t already read it, have a look at the

article on page 23 in the May 2014 Presbyterian

Record. It is written by Mary Beth McLean, Mary

McLean’s daughter-in-law. In it, Mary Beth tells us

what life was like as a missionary wife and mother.

It will surely make you smile.

The Rev. Rebekah’s comment on walking into the

cinema for the movie Heaven is for Real was that it

was like being in church. The seats were filled with

members of St. Andrew’s. (see story on page 8)

Congratulations to Asif Arthur and Nazia Asif on

the birth of their daughter Sheryl on April 16. Sheryl

was baptized on Mother’s Day (photo above).

Diana Corredato just returned from her annual trip

to the Netherlands to see her family. She received a

warm welcome from her parents, who live in

Vlissingen (Flushing in English) – a beautiful, old

harbour city located in the province of Zeeland.

Zeeland is a group of islands close to Belgium.

While in Flushing, she attended church services

with her parents in the Great St. Jacob Church. This

newly-renovated, historic church (1308) belongs to

the Protestant Church Community formerly known

as the Reformed Church. She also enjoyed riding

her bike along the old cobblestone roads and the top

of the dikes and sand dunes or going for walks

along the beach.

If you have a sharp eye, you may have seen the

photo of Erik Lopez, son of Melanie and Gabriel

Lopez and grandson of Bonnie and Andy Bunkis,

in the Brampton Guardian on May 9, but since the

photo’s caption was incorrect, at least one church

mouse was very confused until the correction

appeared in the following edition. Erik was shown

dancing at the Hansa Haus Kinderfest with the

Weiss Blauen Bayern Juniors, who performed at St.

Andrew’s Taste of the World event in 2011.

Special Congregational Meeting

Sunday, June 15 at 12 noon in the Sanctuary to consider this motion:

“Moved that the members of the congregation of St.

Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Brampton endorse

the decision of the Session to adopt the Term Service

Model for eldership as presented, which has been set

out by the Presbyterian Church in Canada.”

Session Update: Following a year-long process of

discernment, research, and preparation by Session

Advisory Group and presentations in March, April

and May, Session decided at its meeting on May 26

to adopt the Term Service Model for the Session.

Congregational approval of Session’s action is

required before we can notify Presbytery of our

desire to make this change.

What is Session?

It is a court of the Presbyterian Church in Canada and is made up of a Teaching Elder (the Minister, who acts as Moderator and is accountable to Presbytery) and Ruling Elders (who historically have served on the Session for life.

Session is accountable to the higher courts of the

Church and is responsible for the spiritual, pastoral

and all other governance of the congregation. It is

responsible for the leadership to the congregation

on all spiritual and temporal matters; for

supervision and oversight of all congregational

activities; all matters relating to membership;

oversight of all Committees of Session (Pastoral

Care, Worship, Christian Education, Stewardship,

Mission, Property).

What is Term Service for Session?

Since 1997, when the model was approved by

General Assembly, almost one-third of Presbyterian

Church in Canada congregations have adopted it.

With Term Service for Session, Elders are still

ordained for life, and will now be elected to serve

on Session for a six-year term. Every two years we

will elect one-third of the Session Elders. Initially

we will have one-third Session Elders serve two-

year terms, one-third Session Elders serve four-year

terms and we will elect one-third new Elders. With

the constant renewal of our Session, we hope to see

new leaders emerge who will bring new gifts and

ideas to allow us to fulfill our mandate. All other

elders will be Supporting Elders.

Other Transitions

With this shift, we will also have a smaller Session.

Pastoral care will be administered through a new

Congregational Care Ministry. You will hear more

about this new ministry and the role of Supporting

Elders in the months to come.

Questions?

Please direct your questions to your Elder or one of

the ministers AND please attend this important

meeting after church on June 15. We believe that

this much needed change will help us to live up to

God’s commission to us as a congregation.

Sunday, June 8

communion, will be held at St. Andrew’s at 10:30 am

that Sunday. Those preferring this service are

encouraged to travel to the park after worship.

Senior Ladies’ May Tea

On Saturday, May 3, at 11:30 am, our annual May

Tea for the ‘over-80’ ladies was held. In attendance

were eighteen ladies from the congregation plus

Valerie Warren’s mother, Dawn Lowe’s daughter,

Felicity Alexander (who drove Frances Dishart) and

Mark and Maggie Nichol. The Rev. Geoff Ross, the

Rev. Rosemary Doran and the Rev. Rebekah

Mitchell were all in attendance as well.

The ladies had a wonderful time socializing with

each other and being treated to a lovely tea time of

sandwiches, scones, various cookies, and two types

of trifle. Leftovers were sent home with any who

were willing to take them.

Thank you to Colleen Peyer for providing the food,

Maggie Nichol for helping in the kitchen and youth

servers: Devon, Petra, Marcus, Makai, and Liam.

7

May Day Away

On May 22, members of the congregation made the

trek out to Crieff Hills Community for the May Day

Away. The day is planned as a sort of mini-spiritual

retreat. Our theme this year was focusing on Pentecost

and those involved with the events of that day.

The day began with worship, led by the Rev.

Rosemary Doran, which focussed us on the idea of

the birth of the church.

The Rev. Geoff Ross then made a presentation about

how we understand the event of Pentecost and how it

affected the people who were present for it. The

group was split into three smaller groups and given

questions for discussion. After some time to work out

the answers to the questions, the whole group

reconvened and shared their thoughts and insights.

Lunch was served in the dining hall at Crieff, and

everyone enjoyed the fresh cornbread, chicken

meatballs and Dutch apple spice-cake.

In the afternoon, the Rev. Rebekah Mitchell made a

presentation about the legacy of the Apostles, called

“Beyond the Room: Reflections on What It Means to

be the Church.” Rebekah shared some videos from the

Clergy Tour of Israel which she and Geoff took during

Advent 2013, including some singing their group did

at the site of “the Upper Room,” the place where

Pentecost took place. Again the group was split into

three, given questions and time to discuss them. When

the group reconvened to share their insights, a lively

discussion on what it means to be the church today and

what it may mean in the future ensued.

After a short break, the Rev. Rosemary Doran led a

communion service to end the day.

All who attended found it an interesting and helpful

experience.

GRACE Notes by Sue Haw

On Sunday, May 4, fifty

people from our GRACE

Groups attended the movie

Heaven Is For Real,

followed by dinner at East

Side Mario’s.

The movie recalls the true

story of Colton Burpo, a

four year old boy from

Imperial, Nebraska, who

almost dies during

emergency surgery for a burst appendix. Colton has

an ‘out of body’ experience in which he says he

goes to heaven. While in heaven, Colton meets

Jesus, who has ‘markers’ on His hands and feet

where He was nailed to the cross.

Colton also meets his great-grandfather, Pop, and his

miscarried sister while he is there. Though Pop died

before Colton was born, Colton is able to identify

him through a picture of him at aged 29, explaining,

“Everyone is young in heaven and they don’t wear

glasses.” As for Colton’s miscarried sister, who

Colton had never heard about before, he says, “She

doesn’t have a name because you (and dad) never

named her.” His comment on how we portray angels

here on earth: “They don’t look like that.”

The movie is based on the book Heaven Is For

Real, written by Todd Burpo with Lynn Vincent. As

GRACE Group participants, we enjoyed a thought-

provoking, Bible-confirming movie. The event was

a wonderful experience, which confirmed our hope

and faith in life after death.

GRACE Groups... a safe place where all are welcome

to explore and confirm God’s promises to us!

Work Weekend

If you own a cottage, you are familiar with the spring

ritual of opening it up for another season. During the

weekend of May 24-26, the staff at Cairn Camp were

delighted to have many volunteers lend a hand with

preparing the site for the coming summer.

St. Andrew’s was well represented with twelve

participants of varying ages: Bill, Thomas and

Victoria Dewar, Stan and Alex Loree, Peter and Chris

Shepherd, Victoria Leigh and Ryleigh Taylor, Richard

McMechan, Mark Giesbrecht and Ken Jackson.

They hammered and painted, cleared brush, repaired a

foundation and dug a drainage trench – Alex had

some awesome blisters to show off after that feat!

Thomas reports that he also did a ‘safety check’ on the

trampoline. By the end of the weekend, the site was

well on the way to being ready for campers.

Going to camp is a wonderful way to celebrate

summer. Many children from St. Andrew’s have

experienced the joy and wonder of time spent during

the summer at Cairn! If you are looking for more

information go to www.ilovecamp.org or call 705-

767-3300. St. Andrew’s covers half the fees for first

time campers!

Lunch with the Minister

In April, the Lunch with the Minister group

discussed “Favourite Hymns”. They named some of

their favourites and shared stories about the

background of a number of hymns. Some of those

who were present have relatives who have helped

create our hymns. Each time the hymn book is

redone, there are old favourites which get dropped,

or modernizing of words; many find it difficult to

have their favourite hymns changed.

A few other interesting facts which were noted:

“Be Still O My Soul” was once a censored

hymn

“When He Cometh” was sung by immigrants

coming to Canada from Europe in steerage on

the ships in the early 20th century

Want to partake in PAR?

As summer nears, it’s a good time to remind

everyone about our church’s participation in PAR

(Pre-Authorized Remittance), a program which

allows you to support St. Andrew’s ministries

through an automatic, monthly withdrawal from

your bank account.

The summer months traditionally see a significant

decline in weekly givings, as many people are on

holiday away from Brampton or don’t attend church

as much during July and August. Naturally, then,

fewer cash- and cheque-filled envelopes find their

way onto offering plates.

In the summer, our expenses don’t stop.

For more detailed information on PAR check the

brochure which was enclosed with your statement

or pick up a brochure in the racks in the Great Hall,

at the back of the sanctuary or on the tables in the

balcony.

Commonly asked questions about PAR…

How does the PAR program work?

Individuals must complete an authorization form

indicating the amount and direction of the monthly

payment and provide a void cheque to the

designated contact person (Bea Embling) or the

church office.

Can anyone participate in the PAR program?

To participate, you need to have a credit union or

bank account and must ensure there are sufficient

funds to cover the monthly deduction.

Can I change or stop my deduction?

What happens if I change banks/bank accounts?

Any changes can be made by notifying the program

administrator (Bea) early in the month in which the

change is to take effect.

If on the program, how do I make offerings for

special appeals or on special occasions, like

Easter and Christmas?

You may still use offering envelopes or a plain

envelope, indicating your name and/or envelope #,

for any extra donations you would like to make.

What are the advantages of the PAR program?

a) Your contributions will be made regularly

even if you are away.

b) You will not have to write a cheque or find

cash each week before you come to church.

c) The church will receive your contributions

consistently, just as we receive all the bills

consistently.

d) It saves time and work for those who count

and register the offerings.

Will I have anything to put in the offering plate

during the worship service?

Yes. PAR offering cards (shown below) are available.

Individuals on PAR can place a card on the offering

plate to represent their gift to God. The ministers

acknowledge both gifts on the offering plates and gifts

given through PAR in the offertory prayer.

Will I still receive an income tax receipt?

Yes. Tax receipts are issued in the normal manner.

Are there any costs to using the PAR program?

There is an administrative cost to the congregation,

but the benefits of increased givings outweigh this

minimal fee.

St. Andrew’s-Pringle

Women’s

Missionary

Society

May 2014

On Tuesday evening, May 6, Kathi DesChene and

Dorothy Monk presided over the monthly WMS

meeting.

Kathi welcomed members and guests and

opened with a prayer and roll call – a WMS

memory – some recent and some distant.

Dorothy conducted the program of brief reports

on some of the charities and missions supported by

this group. Felicity Alexander told us about Armagh,

a not-for-profit organization located in Mississauga,

which provides housing and support for women who

have left abusive relationships. Joyce Wagg

informed us about Change Her World Ministry,

which is committed to removing the barriers world-

wide, which hinder and prevent girls from attending

school and being educated, and women from

achieving health, wellness and economic stability.

Kim Shepherd advised us that Cairn Family Camps

follow the example set by Jesus Christ to build

community in which everyone is safe and welcome.

Dorothy explained that Evangel Hall Mission,

located in Toronto, offers social and recreational

opportunities and life skills development for

disadvantaged youth in the neighbourhood. Ann

Dash completed our study by reporting on the Rev.

Dr. Paul McLean (son of Mary McLean), Missionary

and Bible Translation Advisor of The Presbyterian

Church in Canada and his multicultural, multilingual

mission work in Taiwan.

The studies concluded with the collection of

offerings, Prayer of Dedication, Hymn #826, “The

Day You Gave Us, Lord, Has Ended”, a reading from

1 Peter 4:8-10 and prayer led by Rosemary Doran.

A lively discussion was conducted by Sandra

Jackson with regard to fundraising plans for this

year. A committee was formed to review ideas and

to report to membership at the next meeting.

The evening concluded with the Mizpah

benediction and the sharing of tea, goodies and

fresh ideas.

WMS 100th Anniversary

Celebration

Five members of the St. Andrew’s-Pringle WMS

group – Kathi DesChene, Mary McLean, Kim

Shepherd, Rosemary Doran and Colleen Wood

(Editor of Glad Tidings) – attended a celebration of

the 100th anniversary of the national Women’s

Missionary Society, held in Toronto on May 15.

Colleen Wood is not in the photograph as she was

the photographer.

This group was founded in 1914 and has been a key

player in the sending out of missionaries overseas

and across Canada, as well as in Education for

Mission. With 350 guests present – including a few

brave men! – the conversation and laughter were

non-stop. It was a great opportunity to see familiar

faces – it was a good thing we were all wearing

name tags! – and make new acquaintances.

Rosemary brought greetings on behalf of the Past

Presidents. Pauline Brown, who served for many

years in India, spoke for the former missionaries.

Other speakers included the Moderator of the

General Assembly, the President of the Atlantic

Mission Society and the United Church Women. All

of us enjoyed the lunch, the company, the program

and the opportunity to be a part of yet another

significant moment in the history of the WMS.

***********

A group of women from across Canada reflected

on their personal journey with the Women’s

Missionary Society, and Kim Shepherd is one of

the contributors. The article is in the May/June

issue of the WMS magazine Glad Tidings.

Filling What Is Empty

Psalm 46:10 – Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be

exalted in the earth. (NIV)

Having had a postcard sent to me a few years ago, I chose to keep it on my computer desk where

it sits to remind me to be still and recognize that I am in the presence of God, in accordance with

today’s verse.

This postcard has a picture of a wooden dock that reaches out over the quiet waters of a lake. On

the dock are placed four empty Algonquin chairs, two small empty tables, and some planters.

Though this card represents the stillness of a quiet place where we could be alone with God, it

nevertheless gives me a feeling that these chairs need people in them, and the tables need to be

filled with books or plates of fruit, to make the picture come alive.

I feel that the scene as it stands depicts a certain sense of loneliness.

Though we all need time to be still and know God, we also need to have companions with whom

to share our time. It is especially important to be together when our souls need to reach out to the

Father to give Him praise for everything we have; to Jesus to give Him thanks for saving us to

eternal life; and to the Holy Spirit to ask for strength for today and for what lies ahead.

In other words, chairs weren’t built to be empty, tables to stand alone, docks just to extend over

water, or lakes just to be admired. God gave them all to us to be filled and to be used. We need

each other, and together in fellowship with others, we will all be filled with His Spirit.

Isaiah 45:18 – For this is what the Lord says — he who created the heavens, he is God; he who

fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be

inhabited — he says: “I am the Lord, and there is no other.” (NIV)

Prayer: We come together this day to praise You, Father; to thank You, Jesus, for the

forgiveness of our sin; and to ask You, Holy Spirit, to fill us with strength for today and for

tomorrow. Amen.

Here Comes the Son

On Wednesday, May 14, about forty people gathered

in the Great Hall for our All Ages Event. The evening

had been planned as an outdoor BBQ and activities,

but as the volunteers readied dinner, it began to pour

outside! The rain plan was put into effect, and a great

time was had by everyone as they stayed warm and

dry inside the church. The BBQ dinner was served in

the Great Hall and followed up with indoor activities.

Groups rotated from making the “Here Comes the

Son” sidewalk-chalk banners which are on display in

our sanctuary, to playing a large-scale game of

scrabble, and having a scavenger hunt in the

sanctuary.

The evening came to a close with a camp song sing-

out in the Great Hall, lead by Petra Woods and a

number of Cairn counsellors and campers. Thanks

for a great final event of the season, friends!
