for countries like Australia or the USA you need a special visa. How old do I have to be to do ‘work and travel’? It is allowed to do work and travel from ages 18 to 35. Do I need any prerequisites? It depends on the country you are travelling to. Almost all of the prerequisites are connected to the visa. It is also very important to have some knowledge of the language. Au Pair Year à FAQ

How difficult is it to become an au pair? The more experience you have, the bigger your chances to become an au pair. You must be able to provide at least two references of nursery-related employments. Did you already look after children of acquaintances or neighbours? Could you complete a traineeship in a nursery school? Did you perhaps conduct a sports group or help in child afternoons? You should bring as much experience as possible for your time as an au pair. When should I apply for an au pair year? You should apply at least 3 to 4 month before you depart because you and the agency need some time to prepare documents and apply for a visa. The best time period for applying is approx. 6 to 9 months in advance. How good does my English have to be? You should already have knowledge in English because as an au pair you must be able to agree any time.

How much experience in the support of little children should I have? If you also like to look after children at the age of 3 months to 2 years, you will have to prove your special suitability: You must be at least 19 years old and provide experience in the support of little children on the scale of 200 hours at the beginning of your au pair year. Can I also apply without driving licence? By the time of the registration you don’t need a driving licence, yet. For the dispatch of the complete application documents the possession of the driving licence is, however, absolutely necessary. Without a driving licence the agency cannot arrange an au pair year for you. Can I choose in which state I am going to stay during my au pair year? If you like to spend your au pair year in a certain region you are welcome to inform the agency about it during the personal conversation. The agency will do the best they can to realize your wish.

6

Can I do my au pair year together with a friend? If you apply for an au pair year together with a friend, the agency will send both documents out to the same region. Can I change my host family? If problems appear during your time as an au pair, you can always talk to your agency about it. There are often misunderstandings. If no common solution can be found, a change is possible. Which tasks do I have to be prepared for? As an au pair you are mainly responsible for the support of your host family’s children. Furthermore, easy housework, washing dishes or doing laundry might be on your schedule, too.

What you need to pay attention to when you go to a job interview

( Model: Cristian Moldovanu ; All rights reserved by Hartmut Nörenberg/ http://www.hart-worx.com/)

J kkLkk Bring a copy of your application papers just to be sure. Bring a bag with necessary material.

Don’t prepare yourself for the interview in the very last moment.

Dress appropriately (depending on the job).

Don’t dress provocative or dishevelled.

Have a sleek appearance. Don't chew gum or smell like a cigarette.

Show that you take the interview seriously. àInform yourself about the interviewer’s name & its correct pronunciation.

-Don't treat the interviewer casually. This is an insult to the interviewer and to the organization.

-If the interviewer has a doctoral degree or medical degree, use "Dr. [+ last name]".

Timing Inform yourself about how long it will take you to arrive àIt is better to arrive 10 minutes earlier than 10 minutes too late.

Don’t act as if you were only interested in the money; don't ask about salary and benefits issues until your interviewer brings up the topic.

Page 19: Table of contents - Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium Dinslakenp206282.webspaceconfig.de › uploads › tx_news › Schools... · Table of contents 1. Options after school ... In general,

18

Offer a firm handshake, keep eye contact, and have a friendly expression when your interviewer greets you.

Don't make negative comments about former employers or professors.

If you are nervous try not to show it. Be calm and cool!

Don't go to extremes with your posture; don't slouch, and don't sit rigidly on the edge of your chair.

Respond to questions and back up statements about yourself with specific examples whenever possible.

Don't falsify application material or give wrong answers to interview questions.

If you don’t understand the interviewer’s question, ask politely to repeat or explain it.

Don't be unprepared for typical interview questions. You may not be asked all of them in every interview, but being unprepared will not help you.

Be honest and be yourself – your best professional self!

Don’t bring your parents or friends (and of course no pets!) to the interview – Be independent and do it on your own!

Exhibit a positive attitude and a lot of interest.

Don't allow your cell phone to sound during the interview! (If it does, apologize quickly and ignore it.) Don't take a cell phone call! Don't look at a text message!

If you believe you were treated inappropriately or asked questions that were inappropriate, don’t let the interviewer put you under pressure.

Don’t get upset and aggressive about little things, which might just be meant as a joke.

At the end, take time to ask questions which weren’t discussed but are important for you.

Don’t be too shy. Ask questions and show interest.

When the interviewer concludes the interview, offer a firm handshake and keep eye contact. Depart gracefully.

Don’t exaggerate your reactions at the end of the interview. Stay calm and polite whatever the result of the interview is going to be.

High rents in big cities Big differences in lease rental charges

As you can see in the following picture, there are huge differences between different cities when it comes to chosing an apartment. Munich, for example, has the highest average rent of 11,90€ per m² . In NRW, it is comparatively cheap. For example:

• Duisburg : 6,00€ per m² • Essen: 6,20€ per m² • Dortmund: 6,10€ per m² • Gelsenkirchen: 5,50€ per m²

Other cities outside NRW: • Heidelberg: 9,60€ per m² • Hamburg: 9,00€ per m² • Frankfurt am Main: 9,80€

per m² • Darmstadt: 8,60€ per m²

Surprising results:

• Berlin: 6,40€ per m² • Leipzig: 5,00€ per m² • Flensburg: 5,10€ per m²

Remember that it is much cheaper not to live directly in the city or in popular districts. However, it is a big part of your daily costs and there are some opportunities to save as much money as possible. Another way to save money is to share an apartment with other people. This could be in form of apartment-sharing communities (WG's) or you can live in dormitories (Studentenwohnheime). A good website to find (or launch)

apartment-sharing communities is EasyWG . If you want to live alone or with your partner, you can save the high provision by searching you apartment here. After finding a suitable apartment, the next question will be: Where can I buy cheap furniture? Take a look at UniDeal, for example. They have a lot of great deals.

Expenses for study courses and combined study programs

How much money do you have to spend?

University fees There are two different types of universities: private universities and state universities. They differ a lot when it comes to the fees you have to pay. A few years ago, a lot of federal states in Germany abolished Studiengebühren but there are still other fees at state universities. These fees include for example: library fees, a ticket for bus or train, administration costs, AStA- (Allgemeiner Studenten-ausschuss) and Studentenwerk-fees. Private universities expect you to pay these fees and high Studiengebüren. However, it is hard to find out the exact amount. In general, it is around 500€ or above.

Fees for combined study programs

The expenses in a combined study program are almost comparable to those at private universities. It depends, of course, on the university and the study courses, as well. The Studiengebühren can be 500€ per semester or up to 600€ per month. Sometimes you have to pay around 250€ for your examinations per semester. But don’t forget: You’ll get an average payment of 900€ from your company. If you are lucky, your company might even pay all the costs.

What is “BAföG”? It is a law which regulates financial help for those of you whose parents cannot afford student fees.

Who can get it? People who: -are attending a secondary school starting from class 10 -are going to a special (high) school -take evening classes (main, secondary or high school) -are going to a high school or an academy school -are going to a university

What do I get with “BaföG”? The money you get depends on where you live. If you still live with your parents, you can receive up to 414.00€. If you do not live with your parents, you might receive up to 643.00€.

What do I have to pay back? First of all, it is important to mention that you do not have to pay back the full amount of money you get from “BaföG”. Only 50% have to be paid back after five years, without any interest on it.

How can I earn some extra money during college? Every college student wants extra money and often complains about not having any, whether their college is paid for or not. This is a how-to for those students who want some money to spend on clothes, a date, or maybe just some traveling.

a) Get a part-time job It is really stressful to work during your freetime but you will earn good money. Students can work as a waiter/waitress but you have to know that you often have to work late. Another opportunity is working in a store.

b) Get a campus job A lot of universities offer jobs where you can help disabled students or help out in the cafeteria or in the library, for example.

c) Donate plasma There are many plasma donation centers across Germany. Most centers will give you at least 20-40€ for donating each time. Each appointment takes about an hour and a half, and you can sit and read for class during your donation.
