IntroductionSightwordsarethemostfrequentlyusedwordsinreadingandwriting.Theyarecalled“sightwords”becausetheymustberecognizedinstantly,onsight,forreadingfluency.Manysightwordsdonotfollowstandardphonicsrulesorspellingpatterns,whichmakesthemdifficultforearlyreaderstorecognize,soundout,andcomprehend.Inthisbook,100sightwordsareprovidedforpractice.Words1–50areintendedforfirst-gradestudents,whilewords51–100areintendedforsecond-gradestudents.ThewordsareorganizedbyDr.Fry’sorderoffrequency,withthewordwillbeingthemostfrequentlyusedwordintheEnglishlanguage.Thewordscanbetaughtsequentially,but,dependingonwhatanindividualstudentneeds,ateachercanchoosetoskipsomewordsorteachsomewordsbeforeothers.
Eachwordisintroducedandtaughtindividually.Aseriesofexercisesdevelops,reinforces,andstrengthensstudents’abilitytodothefollowing:
• followdirections
• recognizethewordsonsight
• writethewordswithproperletterformation
• identifythelettersinthewords
• writethewordswithcorrectspelling
• usethewritten-outwordsinsentences
Additionalactivities,startingonpage105,encouragestudentstochoosethecorrectsightwordfromtwochoices.Alloftheanswerchoices(sightwords)canbefoundinthisbook.Theseactivitiesprovideextrapracticeforstudentswhoarefamiliarwithsightwordsandwanttocontinuetheirlearning.
Theflashcardsatthebackofthisbookcanbeusedforreinforcementandtesting.Considerpunchingholesthroughthemsothatthecardscanbeheldtogetherbyastringorbinderring.

Tracing and Writing the WordThisactivityallowsstudentstorecognizeanewsightword.Whenstudentstraceaword,theybecomefamiliarwiththelettersandsequencethatmakeupthenewword.Thisactivityalsoinvitesstudentstopracticetheirletterformation.
Identifying the Word in a GroupThisactivityrequiresstudentstochoosethenewsightwordfromamongstothersimilarlyspelledorsimilarsoundingwords.Indoingso,studentsarelearningtodistinguishthewordfromothercommonwords.
Circling the Word’s VowelsThisactivityreinforcestheideathatlanguagehasrules.Everywordrequiresatleastonevowel.Learningwhichvowelsareinwhichwordswillhelpstudentslaterwhentheyexperiencephonics,syllabication,andspellingexercises.
Finding the Box the Word Fits IntoThisactivityallowsstudentstofocusontheshapeofthenewsightword.Itinvitesstudentstothinkabouthowthelettersfitagainsteachother—whetherlettersgoaboveorbelowthelineandwhetherthoseupwardordownwardlettersgoatthebeginningorendoftheword.
Writing the Word in a SentenceThisactivityencouragesstudentstopracticewritingthenewsightwordinasentence.Thesentenceincludesthesightwordwitharelatedpicture.Note:Sometimesthewordisusedatthebeginningofthesentence.(Seepage5foranexample.)Inthesecases,thecapitalletterwillneedtobetaughtandpracticed.
