Greetings Members of the Media and Friends of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival, Since 1886, the Saint Paul Winter Carnival has brought family-friendly events and community pride to the City of Saint Paul and the Twin Cities metro area. “The Coolest Celebration on Earth™” is managed by the Saint Paul Festival and Heritage Foundation. The 132nd Saint Paul Winter Carnival is gearing up for another “super” year. The 2018 festival will be held January 25 – February 10, an additional seven days from previous years. We’ll be hosting dozens of FREE events, both traditional favorites and new attractions, to entertain our local supporters and out-of-town visitors. Most events will take place in downtown Saint Paul, in and around Rice Park and Landmark Center, as well as at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Here’s a sampling of some of the new highlights on schedule:

The Ecolab Ice Palace presented by Spire Credit Union, the “crown jewel” of the 2018 Saint Paul Winter Carnival, will be on display throughout the 17-day festival. Located in Rice Park in downtown Saint Paul, the approximately 70-foot-high glimmering structure is constructed of more than 4,000 blocks of ice and weighs over two million pounds! Each night of Carnival, a “Flip The Switch” lighting ceremony will be held 5:30 p.m. The Ecolab Ice Palace Light Show presented by Xcel Energy will illuminate Rice Park each night at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

The Not Your Father’s Winter Carnival Music Series on the Spire Credit Union Entertainment Stage will provide live entertainment in Rice Park for 15 days during the festival. From funky disco beats to traditional music representing Cinco de Mayo; country crooners to fun sing-alongs for the whole family; a jazzy afternoon to a purple nighttime tribute to Prince; Rice Park will be the place for great performances.

The Vulcan Snow Park at the State Fairgrounds will be open and ready for play from Friday, January 26 through Sunday, February 11. Once again, it will be the site of the State Snow Sculpting Competition, a giant snow slide, Vulcan Fun Day on January 28, two Vulcan Polar Plunges for Special Olympics (January 28 during the day and February 3 in the evening) and new for 2018 – lawn mower, bar stool ski and kid’s quarter-scale car races, as well as Tow Up Throw Down competitions. MNSnowPark.com

The United States Olympic Committee Team USA’s WinterFest presented by HERSHEY® is bringing the energy and excitement of the 2018 Olympics and Paralympic Winter Games to Carnival on Saturday, February 3 adjacent to Rice Park. The tour will feature meet and greets with former Olympians, a Bobsled Boomerang, and a Curling Challenge. Plus, the Hershey®’s S’moresmobile will be a free treat for visitors.

Through January 31, the Little Free Library® nonprofit is holding an “Ice Your Library Contest.” Creative book lovers are encouraged to decorate their neighborhood Little Free Libraries with ice, snow, or other wintry decorations for prizes. littlefreelibrary.org/ice

Looking for an option before watching the Big Game on February 4? Join us in Landmark Center for Ladies Day, a day of shopping from women-owned businesses, fashion shows, designer purse bingo, and a fitness class.

Minnesota’s iconic food, the hotdish, is front and center at the Saint Paul Winter Carnival’s Fancy Hotdish Challenge presented by Kowalski’s Market and hosted by The Lexington. Wednesday, February 7, seven local restaurants will compete to see who can serve up the best dish of Minnesota comfort food. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at WinterCarnival.com.

Nightly “Flip The Switch” Lighting Ceremonies and Light Shows presented by Xcel Energy

Since the first Saint Paul Winter Carnival in 1886, ice palaces have served as a sparkling symbol of the festival. The 2018 Ecolab Ice Palace presented by Spire Credit Union, the 37th in Carnival’s history, is the crown jewel of this year’s “Coolest Celebration on Earth™.” Located in the heart of downtown Saint Paul in Rice Park, this spectacular structure stands 70-feet tall, consists of more than 4,000 ice blocks and weighs over two million pounds! This stunning palace became a reality through the wondrous efforts of the Saint Paul community. With the guidance of the Ice Palace Committee, enthusiasm and funds were raised through corporate donations and a “Buy a Block” crowd-funding initiative. The Cunningham Group, which has a long history of creating Winter Carnival Ice Palaces, designed this year’s “super” structure. Harvesting of the ice blocks began on Green Lake in Spicer, Minn. in early January. Work continued round-the-clock and hand-in-glove in time for its debut on January 25 thanks to the tremendous teamwork of Park Construction and the Saint Paul Building Trades Construction Unions. Each night of Carnival, a “Flip The Switch” lighting ceremony will be held 5:30 p.m. The Ecolab Ice Palace Light Show presented by Xcel Energy will illuminate Rice Park each night at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. “Saint Paul is a stronger community when we find extraordinary ways to bring people together to celebrate what connects us,” said Saint Paul Mayor Melvin Carter. “The Winter Carnival and the Ecolab Ice Palace sends the message to people across our city and the entire region that we embrace and celebrate winter.” To show your support for the Ecolab Ice Palace presented by Spire Credit Union, you can “Buy a Block” by visiting wintercarnival.com or purchase a commemorative button (while they last!) for $10 at the merchandise stand in Rice Park. For more on the history of Winter Carnival Ice Palaces, visit wintercarnival.com/events/ice-palaces/.

2018 Saint Paul Winter Carnival Buttons

New: Commemorative Ecolab Ice Palace Button

Help support the Saint Paul Festival & Heritage Foundation continue to produce and manage the “Coolest Celebration on Earth™” by purchasing a Saint Paul Winter Carnival button. A Brief History of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival

Since 1886, the Saint Paul Winter Carnival continues to bring family-friendly events and community pride to Saint Paul and the Twin Cities metro area.

The Saint Paul Winter Carnival is the oldest winter festival in the United States. It predates the Tournament of Roses Festival by two years.

Several Eastern newspaper correspondents kindled the start of the Winter Carnival by visiting Saint Paul in the fall of 1885 and returning home to report that Minnesota, in general, was another Siberia, unfit for human habitation.

A group of business owners decided to retaliate by creating a wintertime festival which would showcase all the beauty of Minnesota winters. They worked with the City of Montreal which already had a winter carnival in place. Due to a small pox epidemic which suspended the 1886 Montreal Festival, Saint Paul lured Alexander Hutchinson, the designer of Montreal’s ice palaces in 1883, 1884, and 1885 to blueprint Saint Paul’s first ice castle. The castle was constructed on February 1, 1886 at a cost of $5,210 with a height of 106 feet. A comparison to this first castle is the Pepsi Palace of 1992 with a cost of $1,900,000 and a height of 165 feet (a Guinness record).

As with the concept of the Montreal Festival, the legend and other activities were also adapted. Montreal’s Ice King accompanied by Queen Aurora. The Saint Paul characters in turn became King Boreas and the Queen of the Snows. The mischievous Vulcan and his red-caped Krewe were created from the Germanic tradition of the energy and disruption which springtime brings to the final days of winter.

The Winter Carnival Legend itself was initially written down by newspaper columnist Fran

Madden in 1937 and has been updated and revised ever since.

Today, King Boreas and the Queen of the Snows rule over approximately 21 members of the Royal Family including Boreas’s four brothers Titan, Euros, Zephyrus and Notos along with their four princesses, the Prime Minister and up to ten Royal Guards.

The culmination of the Winter Carnival is the dethroning of Boreas by the Vulcan Krewe. The Royal Family and Vulcan Krewe are made up of volunteers that make over 400

appearances during the year to local and national festivals, nursing homes, schools and hospitals on behalf of the Winter Carnival and the City of Saint Paul.

The Saint Paul Winter Carnival is produced by the Saint Paul Festival and Heritage Foundation and is funded by private donations and corporate contributions. The Board of Directors, supported by hundreds of corporate and individual members, employs a full time staff to help plan this community celebration.

~The Royal Legend ~

As the "King of the Winds," Boreas assigned to each of his brothers a permanent grant of great force and power. To Titan was assigned the blustery North Wind. To Euros was granted control of the irresponsible East Wind. To Zephyrus was given custody of the bountiful West Wind. To Notos was presented the balmy but unstable South Wind. The brothers cavorted gaily over land and sea. Boreas, while on his extensive travels, came upon a winter paradise known as Minnesota. He paused to behold the enchanting beauty of a magnificent group of seven gently sloping hills in whose embrace nestled a beautiful city. Boreas whistled in sheer ecstasy, "Historic Saint Paul and her seven hills! An ideal place.I will make Saint Paul the capitol of all my domains. It will henceforth be emblazoned to the world as the winter playground of the Realm of Boreas."

Meanwhile, Vulcanus Rex, the god of Fire, and the implacable enemy of Boreas, crackled in defiant disdain. "By the great sword of Mars I will temper the blusterings of Boreas with the heat and roar of my forces." He was tireless in his bitter resistance to all the festivities of Boreas.

Undaunted, Boreas proclaimed a celebration in the spirit of gay Carnival. "So be it!" shouted Boreas, "There will be a Carnival in old Saint Paul!" Boreas selected a Prime Minister to coordinate preparations in all the Principalities, Provinces and Royal Houses within the realm of Saint Paul.

And so, for ten glorious days, there was Carnival and joyous celebration in Saint Paul -- feasting, dancing, fun and frolic reigned over by Boreas and the Queen of Snows, the fairest maiden of the realm, along with the four Winds, who were each accompanied by a lovely Princess from the realm of Boreas.

Klondike Kate, a lady of song and merriment, added her sassy but enchanting voice to the festivities by singing songs of desire and sentiment.

Senior King Winter, Queen of the Northlands, and their court contributed goodwill and wisdom, while Junior King Frost and Queen of the Snowflakes with their court add youthful exuberance to the festival.

On the final day of celebration, Vulcanus Rex and his Krewe stormed the magnificent ice castle and confronted the King's Guard. Upon the good counsel of the Queen, Boreas bade farewell to the people of his winter capitol in the interest of peace and goodwill, and returned to dwell among the gods of Olympus.

Boreas and his court looked forward to the time when summer's warmth would once again relinquish its hold on the realm and the frosty atmosphere of winter would prevail.

Vulcanus Rex and the Vulcan Krewe

When the Saint Paul Winter Carnival was born in 1886, so did the legend and spirit of the Vulcans with the very first Fire King, Colonel Delos A. Monfort. For the first nine years of Carnival, the Fire King battled alone, without the now legendary Vulcan Krewe.

In 1940, the legend of the Vulcans changed forever when E.R. Reiff was chosen as Vulcanus Rex VI. The new Fire King chose a Krewe of six men to help him chase Boreas and his wintry ways out of town and gave all six Krewe members specific names. Rex VI also designed the basic running suit still worn today: a hat, running suit, cape, boots, gloves, goggles, and of course - grease.

In 1970, Vulcanus Rex XXXIII Joe Rogers added and named a seventh member of the Krewe. The Krewe includes Baron Hot Sparkus, Grand Duke Fertilious, Count of Ashes, Count Embrious, Duke of Klinker, General Flameous, and the Prince of Soot. These names each have their own meaning and role, and are still represented at each year’s Saint Paul Winter Carnival.

The Vulcan Knighting Ceremony has been around for almost 60 years. A knighting ceremony usually consists of a “title” being bestowed, and a certificate being presented, making it a title and occasion to never be forgotten. The title given usually reflects the individual’s special contribution to a community, company, club, organization, or family.

The present fire engine being used by the Krewe is “Luverne,” a 1932 model named for the town where the engine was built, Luverne, Minn. It is believed to be the only of its type left. The City of Saint Paul let the Krewe begin using this engine in the late 1950s and have had to replace nearly everything but the frame over the years.

In 1958, Fire & Brimstone was formed and has since been run by a board of directors that is elected at their annual meeting. The board’s main objective is assisting the Council of Fire Kings put a new Krewe out each year, as well as planning many activities and events for members and their families throughout the year.

The Klondike Kates – The Ladies of Song & Merriment

She had beauty and charm, and she struck it rich in the Gold Rush of 1898 as the most famous dance hall girl in the north. She so charmed the legions of miners that they showered her with gold dust and nuggets, nicknaming her "Klondike Kate."

In 1971, a contest was initiated for choosing a new Kate each year, but she became so in demand that a group was formed to fulfill more performances. She has since become Saint Paul's mistress of fun, frivolity, and good fellowship, and her role in the Saint Paul Winter Carnival Legend is to bring song, fun, and merriment to all activities.

Today, the Klondike Kates make over 100 appearances each year, including singing live on their award-winning float in summer parades and many other engagements, all while working full time jobs.

Their statement of purpose reads "...to promote, enhance, and maintain a positive image, reputation and public perception of the legend of Klondike Kate." They are a "sisterhood" of women who love to perform and, by their very presence, provide an open-arm welcome to Saint Paul visitors and locals alike.
