    McGovern Medical School

    January 22-24, 2021

    Registration Open Now!

The theme is Advocacy in Action: Finding Your Voice through SNMA Leadership. You will have the opportunity to network with "Black Men and Women in Leadership" across the nation at our Friday evening virtual get-together. During the Saturday sessions, we will also hear from thought-provoking leaders, many of whom were leaders within the SNMA before they graduated and became physician leaders. Additionally, in line with the SNMA's heart for service, all attendees will be provided the opportunity to serve communities around the nation through a virtual pipeline mentorship session with elementary, junior high school, and high school students! If you are interested in understanding what it looks like to be a leader on the SNMA's Board of Directors, during the weekend, you will have the opportunity to sit-in on our board meetings that will occur after the main program Saturday and again on Sunday. Current members will pay $5 on-line by credit card; non-members will be charged $35. If you have questions about your membership status, please write to [email protected] before attempting to register for the NLI. We are looking forward to an energetic and productive weekend where we know you will find value. Come and interact with current leaders and plan to continue along the path of leadership yourself!

    The Future of Health Policy

January Mental Health Awareness Presented by the Community Service Committee

Mental health has traditionally been a taboo topic for several years, particularly in black and brown communities. Seeking outside resources to manage your mental wellbeing was an admission of weakness and that something truly was wrong with you. However, Millennials and Generation Z having a better understanding of the importance of mental health, and celebrities being vocal about their personal struggles has created a culture where the words “depressed” “anxious” and “suicidal” can be used without shame. Half of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24; and the average delay between the onset of symptoms and treatment is 11 years.

To read more, check out the Community Service Webpage!

If your chapter is participating in any events to bring awareness, we would love to hear from you! Please send any photos and/or experiences related to Mental Health awareness to [email protected].

MAPS MCAT Initiative: Calling all SNMA and MAPS Members!

    *Apply by January 17, 2021*

    Apply Here

COVID-19 has disrupted medical school admission s, including MCAT administrations, and many of our students have found studying for the exam amidst the pandemic very challenging. We also know that even in normal years, the MCAT remains a hurdle for premed students, especially those from economically disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds. In order to help students overcome this hurdle, we are implementing the second installment of the MCAT Initiative on so that MAPS students around the country can use this as a resource while they prepare to take the exam during the next testing cycle. Please consider this as community service that will directly impact our MAPS members!

SNMA members and other med students who attained their desired score on the MCAT and want to reach back and help premedical students should complete the form by January 17, 2021, 11:59pm EST and return it to [email protected].

Health Policy and Legislative Affairs The Student National Medical Association’s Health Policy and Legislative Affairs Committee wishes to further support chapters during this period of heightened institutional and national advocacy. Please reference our Mobilize and Activate Advocacy Manual for advocacy tips, guidelines and protocol. If you have created or found materials (lists of demands, protest guidelines, educational materials, etc.) that you think other members will benefit from, please send those to [email protected]. We will be making these resources available to chapters who need support. Each region also has a Political Advocacy Liaison who can support regional coordination and interactions with our national committee. SNMA is here to support you!

University of Washington Clerkship LabM 680 Clinical Laboratory Testing Distance Learning – Methods and Interpretation This clerkship provides medical students an opportunity to develop their diagnostic and patient management skills through directed distance learning in the hospital-based clinical laboratory. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the clinical laboratory response has been dynamic. Laboratory Medicine resident service work, conferences, and didactics have shifted to a predominately remote-access paradigm. This represents a unique opportunity to participate in similar, clinical activities with some additional guidance. The student will directly observe faculty-level review of test results (“sign-out”) or rounds and complete both guided and independent study; this involves small group sessions, journal article reading, live and recorded didactics. The goal of the schedule is to give students a glimpse of multiple laboratories and the breadth of testing performed in the Department. Special focus may include how the clinical laboratories have mobilized in response to an urgent pandemic threat, and whether this response is generalizable or unique to UW Laboratories. Path 682 Diagnostic Pathology Distance Learning This clerkship provides historically underrepresented medical students an opportunity to improve on gross and microscopic diagnosis, to experience what it is like to be a resident at UW, to combine clinical knowledge and experience with pathology and apply the best patient care. Medical students participating in this course will be paired with a resident and/or faculty mentor in their field of interest to serve as a source of information and guidance. Clerkships are four weeks in duration and are available to full-time third and fourth-year students who are in good standing at LCME-accredited U.S. medical schools. Upon completion of the clerkship, successful participants may be invited to interview for the University of Washington Anatomic & Clinical Pathology Residency Program.
