Please encourage all new and re-elected officers to come to the County Officer Training hosted by the Mentoring Committee on September 29 at 7:00 pm. It is important that each and every club officer receive the information needed to help get their club year off to a great start. To learn more, attend the next meeting on Saturday, September 10 at Appleton YMCA where we will be installing our 2016-17 officers. Look to your email for more details to come.

Outagamie County 4-H Action Center Stage Pie ContestThank you to all 15 contestants who entered the first ever pie contest. When we talked about having such a contest, we had no idea the quantity or quality of pies that would come in. Our judges and committee were very impressed. The samples given

to the public allowed many people the opportunity to enjoy the pie! Thanks to Schwan’s we could top it off with Ice Cream. Although we only offered one blue ribbon pie plate per division, the awarded points were very close. We hope that next year we have even more pies.

Winners of the contest: 4-H Division: Wolf River Beavers

Open Class Division: Lydia Schiedermayer

Wilton Cake Decorating WinnersBest of Class: Joy VandenbergBest of Class Cupcake: Josie VandenHeuvel

Worth a Pie in the FaceFilling Phil at the “Pie Phil-ling” area outside the Action Center Stage was not an easy task! It took an estimated 150 pies to finally call it enough. The effort raised $75.00 towards a donation to the Fox Valley Humane Association (FVHA). Thank you to all those who participated including Mary Hoefler and a very special thanks to Phil Hietpas to allow such fun at the fair.

Seth Harrmann, B-Square 4-H Club, plans to attend Wisconsin Lutheran College. His major projects included dog, pets, youth leaders and woodworking. He has also assisted his club, community and state by volunteering to support the Fox Valley Humane Society, Dale Food Panty, Brewster

Village, Salvation Army, Harbor House, American Red Cross, Cleaning up the Black Otter Lake, helping with Homeless events and rebuilding bikes for low income youth. He held every club office except for one and attended EVERY trip offered to members in Outagamie County. Seth was in many dog activities, speaking, and drama and demonstration competitions. He played basketball and received the WI Key Award. Seth spoke in his essay that 4-H embraced him into a culture that did not judge him for being him. He spoke of his challenge with speaking and how 4-H helped him to overcome. Seth feels that 4-H helped him to learn the value of hard work, perseverance and the value of being a useful member of his community and his school. He wants to make the best better. Seth has started with some of our youth already. Thank you Seth for your determination!

Kate McCloy, B-Square 4-H Club, is getting ready to attend DePaul University. Her major interest is biology and Spanish. Some of Kate’s 4-H projects include: Photography, Rabbits, Foods and Nutrition, House Plants and Dogs. Kate’s community

service included helping with her club’s major fund-raiser, Fright Night, Black Otter Clean Up, Project Military Kids, worked in the dairy bar and has helped with our county’s Outreach committee. She held nearly every officer’s position for her club. She went to nearly every trip that Outagamie County has to offer. Kate participated in the Foods Revue and received many project and golden book awards. Kate expressed that she has strengthened her team building and public speaking skills and developed friendships. Kate has developed the leadership qualities, dedication, motivation and confidence through 4-H to pursue her dreams. Thank you Kate for your dedication!

Sarah Schultz, Crystal Star 4-H Club, attends Marian University. Sarah has been involved in many projects including Beef, Photography, and Woodworking. She has assisted her club and community by helping to clean road ditches, raking leaves for the elderly and helping with concessions just

to name a few. Her leadership roles included being a club officer, assisting the main leader, and organized trip and speakers. Sarah mentioned in her essay that she may not remember each and every activity or craft but she does remember the many life lessons and skills that she thanks 4-H for. She currently is pursuing the field of pediatric nursing. She feels that 4-H has cultivated her dedication and hard work. I quote, “Once a 4-H’er forever a 4-H’er.” Thank you to Sarah for your continued commitment!

Marissa Hoefler, Buchanan Badgers 4-H club, has a major interest in Early Childhood education and plans to attend Fox Valley Technical College. Marissa has taken projects like ceramics, arts and crafts, drawing and painting, photography, vegetables and youth leaders just to name a few! Marissa

She has gone on trip like Explore WI, 4-H State and Youth Conference, and CWF. She also has received the WI Key Award. If there is an event, Marissa would try to volunteer! Marissa feels that 4-H gave her a place to call home and help make lifelong friends. She feels it gave her opportunities to try new activities. As many of you know, the UW-Extension Outagamie County has distributed the 4-H Connections Newsletter and many other publications by mailing a printed version and posting a PDF version on the website. These newsletters contain a mix of informative articles and news of upcoming meetings and events — information that is also posted on our website. As many other organizations in our area have experienced, there is a call to action to tighten budgets and reduce costs without minimizing services.

One way we can achieve this is to move exclusively to online newsletters and e-blast updates. We also are improving our website by adding new features that will allow you to stay informed and add events to your calendar - all with a click of a button.

Unless you submit a request to the UW-Extension Outagamie County office, you will not receive a paper newsletter. Please Note: The newsletter can be made available in alternative formats (i.e. plain text, transcript, large print, language, or braille) by contacting a support staff member at 920-832-5121. (711 for Relay).
