Lab GuidanceXtremIO X2 Native Replication and DDR Per Volume - Getting Started

As part of XtremIO X2's latest release, we have added two key features to furtherimprove the functionality and usability of the array: Native Replication and DRR PerVolume (Data Reduction Ratio).

This hands-on lab should only take roughly 20 minutes to complete. Note that this labwill be using a guided demo, to walk users through these recently added features. If youare interested in a more interactive experience, feel free to try out the Introduction toXtremIO X2 Hands-on Lab where you will get the freedom to test out the basicmanagement features of the XtremIO WebUI.

Lab Module List:

• Module 1 - Native Replication (15 minutes) - Basic - This module will walk youthrough setup of replication between XtremIO systems and explore the optionsand features available to the administrator

• Module 2 - DRR Per Volume (5 minutes) - Basic - This module will cover how toview data reduction (compression and deduplication) at the individual volumelevel and the benefits provided

Native Replication - Module OverviewModule 1 - Native Replication (15 minutes) - Basic - This module will walk youthrough a simple procedure to enabling and utilizing the new Native Replication featureon your XtremIO X2.

XtremIO is bringing to the market a very unique and efficient Native Replicationsolution. The Native Replication feature is designed with the same inherent architecturalcharacteristics that define the XtremIO storage array:

• Content Addressable Storage (CAS) architecture as the underlying super-efficientmeta data constructs, ensuring that all COPY operations are always performed in-memory

• Always on, always inline data services• Deduplication as part of each IOs data path rather than a post processing

process; this ensures that only unique data blocks are written and replicated tothe target site

In this module, you will have gained the following skills upon completion:

• Creating a Remote Protection Session• Testing a Protection Copy (PIT) at the target• Creating a bookmark• Failing over to a specific PIT at the target• Failing back to the local cluster without losing any data• Repurposing a new DEV environment• Refreshing the DEV environment from a new Protection Copy

This module contains the following lessons:

• Lesson 1 - Using the Native Replication Guided Demo

Did you know? - XtremIO NativeReplicationReplication Size Matters!

• With XtremIO X2 Native Replication, only unique changes are replicated – ondeduplication only the metadata is copied without copying the data itself.

• Global deduplication – The deduplication is not only on the replicated volumeitself, but also across volumes, thus when replicating, for instance, multiple data-stores even in different replication sessions the deduplicated blocks arereplicated only once. The same works for repurposing environments that areprotected to the same target cluster.

BENEFITS SUMMARY

The efficiency of XtremIO Native Replication reduces the utilization on the sourceand target arrays and on the wire. By reducing the utilization and improving the copyefficiency, with XtremIO Native Replication there is no need to compromise on thedesired RPO nor on the cost.

By reducing significantly the capacity that is transferred on the wire, the replicationprocess becomes much faster, which enables XtremIO Native Replication to support theAFA high workloads.

Module ConclusionCongratulations on completing Module 1 - Native Replication.

In this module, you have first explored the key components to enabling and configuringNative Replication for XtremIO X2. With this demo, you were able to

DRR Per Volume - Module Overview

Module 2 - DRR Per Volume (5 minutes) Basic - This module will cover the new DataReduction Ratio (DRR) per-volume feature of XtremIO. This allows XtremIOadministrators to view not just the compression and deduplication at a system-widelevel, but by pinpointing the savings on each individual volume, the user can determinewhich data or workloads are better taking advantage of the data reduction technologyinherent to XtremIO.

Additionally, not only can the DRR be displayed, but the amount of physical spaceunique to each volume can be determined as well. In the case of high physical storageutilization where you may be looking to migrate data to another array to free upcapacity, this feature will give you an accurate representation of how much space couldbe saved from each migrate or delete operation.

In this module, you will have gained the following skills upon completion:

1. Viewing provisioned volume size2. Viewing logical capacity that was written to the specified volume3. Viewing the minimum physical space that will be freed if a specified

volume is removed4. Viewing the Data Reduction Ratio of a specified volume, taking into

account Deduplication and Compression

Scripps Health and XtremIO X2Scripps Health is a private, nonprofit, integrated health system in San Diego, California. It is known not only for its four top-ranked hospitals and 28 outpatient facilities, but alsofor having 2,600 of the best affiliated doctors in the area, who treat 700,000 patientsannually.

Scripps’ data storage demands had been exploding — driven by the need to handle anever-increasing volume of digital images and address mandated retention requirementsfor patient information.

VDI Data Reduction Ratio on Scripps Health's XtremIO X2

Scripps’ XtremIO arrays are proving to be ideal for its expanding virtual desktopinfrastructure (VDI). With approximately 500 Citrix XenApp virtual servers and 400 CitrixXenDesktop VDI desktops supporting thousands of users, Scripps relies on XtremIO todeliver an efficient, high-quality experience for every user, 24x7x365. XtremIO’sconsistent performance, reliability and outstanding deduplication capabilities provide a4:1 data reduction ratio while enabling Scripps’ caregivers to spend more time focusingon patients and less worrying about technology.

“Dell EMC XtremIO provides the exceptional performance, continuous availability andflexibility to support multiple workloads to make this all work,” says Hector Aguirre, senior systems engineer for Scripps Health. “The XtremIO array met every one of ourrequirements.”
