Through the Garden Gate at Hollin Hall Center

Feature Article by Becky Bilowus Assistant

Irsquove been gardening as long as I can remember I learned by doing and tagging along in the garden with my mother and

grandmother The Farmerrsquos Almanac was always one of the first things we referred to when we had a gardening question

Now I research online and read about new and unusual plants and techniques for having a successful garden It gives me

new ideas and keeps my gardens fresh and exciting and gives me something to use to create interest and share ideas with

other gardeners I rely mostly though on the wisdom of the old fashioned way of doing things Sometimes the tried and true

and simple ways are the best

Organic vegetable gardening is now a very popular hobby now that people are becoming more aware of the dangers of

pesticides to our health and wellbeing We do not use pesticides on our vegetable garden here at the center Hollin Hall

Senior Center is committed to raising awareness of the benefits of gardening not only for the produce that we harvest and

share but for the exercise and mental health benefits it provides

Fortunately this year we have not had any issues with garden pests Last year we planted beans that were overrun with

insects and we chose not to plant them again this year Currently we are planning for our Fall Winter planting Lettuce and

peas should be some of the crop you will see there We will be amending the soil in our newest raised beds to enable them to

hold more moisture

The gardens here are always changing There are all sorts of veggies being harvested now and we have had some yummy

stir fry and salad lunches creatively prepared by Patti depending upon what was ripe that day

We are experimenting with new types of vegetables to see what thrives in our raised beds When volunteer pink cherry

tomato plants appeared this spring I nurtured and weeded around them instead of planting new Julie tried some personal

size watermelons that crept below the tiny tomatoes saving space and bearing some lovely little personal size fruit We have

a nice variety of herbs to add delicate flavor to our culinary creations Lots of squash tomatoes cucumbers and eggplants

have been harvested this summer

We have been tracking what is happening in a new gardening corner At the end of the first floor hallway you will find a cozy

seating area to check out our gardening library and the bulletin board Here you will find helpful hints and articles of interest

Be looking for announcements on this board and in the HHSC Highlites for upcoming gardening events and programs

We welcome helping hands to weed and water too (You donrsquot need to be a gardener to participate ndash we will teach you)

Come into the office and see Becky or another staff person if you are interested

Please take a minute to walk rdquoThough the Garden Gaterdquo and if you go out the back door take a stroll through our garden
