Today’s Matchup“4 Downs” with the Grizzlies

1 - Both Liberty and Montana have defeated No. 1-ranked teams during the past year. Liberty de-feated No. 2/1 Coastal Carolina by a 15-14 count in the 2014 regular-season finale. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies opened the 2015 season with a 38-35 victory over No. 1/1 North Dakota State.

2 - Liberty and Montana each went 9-5 and reached the second round of the 2014 FCS Play-offs. While it was the Flames’ FCS Playoffs debut, Montana was making its 22nd postseason ap-pearance. The Grizzlies were the 1995 and 2001 FCS national champions.

3 - Montana is facing a Big South opponent for the third time in the last four seasons. The Griz-zlies defeated Liberty 34-14 on Sept. 15, 2012 and lost to Coastal Carolina 42-35, in the second round of the 2013 FCS Playoffs. Both of those games were played in less-than-ideal conditions in Missoula, with a smoke-filled atmosphere at the Liberty game and below-zero temperatures for the Coastal Carolina clash.

4 - Montana is coming off of a bye week and is the first of four straight Liberty opponents who will have a bye preceding their matchup with the Flames this season. The Grizzlies are only the fourth squad from west of the Mississippi ever to play at Williams Stadium, joining Missouri State (1989), Texas State (1990) and Cal Poly (1997).

Last Meeting with Montana

Sept. 15, 2012Montana 34, Liberty 14Missoula, Mont. (Washington-Grizzly Stadium)

• The only previous gridiron meeting between Lib-erty and Montana saw the Grizzlies race out to a 24-0 first-half lead and never look back on a smoky afternoon in Missoula, Mont.

• The opportunistic Grizzlies returned a punt for a TD and turned two Liberty turnovers into scores to build their early lead.

• Liberty outgained Montana, 342-296, but was victimized by three turnovers.

• In his first career start at QB, freshman Josh Woodrum completed 34-of-44 passes for 322 yards, while throwing two TD passes and one in-terception. The 34 completions set a Liberty sin-gle-game record.

• Pat Kelly served as Woodrum’s primary receiver, hauling in 14 passes for 88 yards and a score.

• RB Dan Moore rushed for 92 yards and a TD for the Grizzlies, while QB Trent McKinney notched both a passing and rushing TD.

• Saturday’s game will mark the eighth matchup between FCS Top 25 teams at Williams Stadium all-time. The Flames are 2-5 in the previous sev-en contests.

• The Liberty-Montana clash will be the first meet-ing between FCS Top 15 squads in Williams Sta-dium history.

• No. 8/7 Montana is the eighth FCS Top 10 team ever to visit Williams Stadium. Liberty is 1-6 against FCS Top 10 squads at the facility with a 28-14 triumph over No. 6/8 Stony Brook on Nov. 10, 2012.

Flames vs. the FCS Top 25

• Liberty is 16-50 all-time versus nationally ranked FCS opponents.

• The Flames went 3-2 against FCS Top 25 foes in 2014 and have won four of their last six meetings with Top 25 teams.

• Liberty is 5-7 versus ranked opponents under head coach Turner Gill, including 2-4 at home.

Milestone Watch0.5/2 - With 20.5 career sacks, Chima Uzowihe

is tied with Gardner-Webb’s Brian Johnston for the Big South record and needs one-half sack to claim sole possession of first place on the all-time list. Meanwhile, two more sacks would en-able Uzowihe to break the Liberty career record of 22 sacks, held by Aaron DeBerry (2000-03).

113 - D.J. Abnar is 113 rushing yards shy of 2,000 for his career.

A Liberty Win Would ...

• Be the Flames’ first-ever victory over a Big Sky opponent (in four tries).

• Mark the Big South’s second straight win over Montana (also Coastal Carolina in 2013).

• Be Liberty’s fifth victory in its last seven meetings with FCS Top 25 foes.

• Mark the Flames’ third win over an FCS Top 10 opponent under Head Coach Turner Gill.

• Give Liberty a 2-1 record to start the season for the third straight year.

• Be Turner Gill’s 25th victory at Liberty and his 50th triumph as a collegiate head coach.

• Boost the Flames’ all-time record at Williams Sta-dium to 102-45.
