IntroductionThe Advantage Phonics Series builds a solid foundation for reading instruction. As outlined in thefederally mandated No Child Left Behind Act, a research-based reading curriculum should includethe following five key components: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, readingfluency, and reading comprehension. This series offers strong skill instruction along with motiva-tional features in an easy-to-use format.

Take a look at all the advantages this phonics series offers . . .

Strong Skill Instruction• Phonemic awareness focuses on

the sounds in words (apart fromtheir letter representation). Achild’s level of phonemic aware-ness is a key factor in predictingreading success. This concept ispresented at the beginning ofthe lower-level books to lay thegroundwork for solid phonicsinstruction.

• Sight words or high-frequencywords are highlighted through-out the series. These often-encountered words can improvereading fluency when childrenmaster them and can recognizeand read them effortlessly.

• The sequence of phonics instruc-tion in each resource enableschildren to immediately transfertheir phonics skills to actualreading. The “Put It AllTogether” mini-book at the endof each unit combines all theskills practiced in the unit in anauthentic reading situation.

IntroductionMotivational Format• The teaching component at the top of

the activity pages provides the supportchildren need to work through the bookindependently.

• Each unit ends with a small puzzle to recognize and reward progress and success.

• The “Think It Through” feature providesfun puzzles and brainteasers.

• The letter character mascot adds a funelement to each activity page.

Assessment • Review pages at the end of each unit

offer mixed-skill practice.• The “Take a Test Drive” pages provide

practice in various test-taking formats, including multiple choice and shortresponse. These formats model nationalstandardized and proficiency tests.

• The tracking sheet at the back of eachbook provides a motivational tool forchildren to use as they work their wayfrom activity 1 to 100.

Answer Key• Each page, with the

answers completed, isreproduced in a miniatureformat at the back of thebooks to make checkinganswers quick and easy.
