Metal Cutting Machine Tools plays a major role in the production of diverse products starting
with Automobile industry to high precision components for the Aerospace, Defence,
Railways, Instrumentation and Electronics industries, and everywhere in-between.
The metal cutting machine tool industry in India has been serving the need for
manufacturing through the manufacture of a variety of metal cutting machines. Although the
industry is yet to meet the full potential and demand for higher technology machines, market
share for Indian machines have improved in recent years.
The report analyses the macroeconomic conditions of Indian and global economy and
projections of growth for short term outlook. Evaluation of Machine Tool industry at global
and Indian market gives the overall assessment of where India stands in the global machine
tool market. Detailed analysis of metal cutting machine tool industry incorporates summary
of machine types and product offerings and the market size and growth of metal cutting
industry.
Import analysis of last five financial years (from 2013-14 to 2017-18) gives the trend of metal
cutting machinery imports by product and country. Opportunity analysis identifies the key
areas of improvement for domestic manufactures and includes the strategic
recommendations. Consolidated investment list in metal cutting industry user sectors
analyses the potential investment of projects in 2018. Further, different domestic
manufacturers specialized in different metal cutting machines are identified.
This study report brings the demand trends in metal cutting machine tools industry in India.
Imports of various machines and source of imports are analysed which can be used as
reference guide which can help manufacturers of metal cutting machines in India to develop
strategies and plans to meet the potentially large requirement for such machines.

Metal Cutting Machine Tools Classifications
Metal Cutting is a collection of processes wherein material is brought to a specified
geometry by removing excess material using various kinds of tooling to leave a
finished part that meets specifications. Based on the working process, metal
cutting machineries can be broadly classified into the following categories.
Turning Machines: Turning is a metal cutting process for producing a
cylindrical surface with a single point tool. The work piece is rotated on
a spindle and the cutting tool is fed into it radially, axially or both.
Machining Centre: The term “machining centre” describes almost any
CNC milling and drilling machine that includes an automatic tool
changer and a table that clamps the work piece in place. On a
machining centre, the tool rotates, but the work does not.
Drilling Machine: Drilling is a cutting process that uses a drill bit to cut
a hole of circular in solid cross section materials. The drill bit is usually
a rotary cutting tool, often multipoint. The bit is pressed against the
work piece and rotated at rates from hundreds to thousands of
revolutions per minute.
Milling Machine: Milling is the machining process of using rotary
cutters to remove material from a work piece by advancing (or feeding)
in a direction at an angle with the axis of the tool.
Grinding machine: A grinding machine, often shortened to grinder, is
any of various machine tool used for grinding, which is a type of
machining using an abrasive wheel as the cutting tool. Each grain of
abrasive on the wheel's surface cuts a small chip from the work piece
via shear deformation. Grinding is used to finish work pieces that must
show high surface quality) and high accuracy of shape and dimension.
Gear Cutting machine: Gear cutting is any machining process for
creating a gear. The most common gear-cutting processes include
hobbling broaching, milling and grinding. Such cutting operations may
occur either after or instead of forming processes such as forging,
extruding casting, or sand casting.
Electrical discharge machining (EDM): Also known as spark
machining, spark eroding, burning, die sinking, wire burning or wire
erosion, is a manufacturing process whereby a desired shape is
obtained by using electrical discharges (sparks)

Opportunities in Indian market
Metal Cutting Machinery Industry – Opportunity Analysis
Economy: Fastest growing major economy of the world. Estimated to surpass
China’s GDP growth rate to reach 7.4% in 2018. Government thrust to take
India’s GDP to $10 trillion by 2032.
Make in India policy: aims to increase share of manufacturing in GDP to 25%
by 2022. Focus on 25 key Sectors (Automobile, Aviation, Railways etc.) with
100% FDI permit.
Ease of Doing Business index improved 53 ranks (from 130th in 2016) to 77 in
2018. GST – to further enhance ease of doing business in India.
India ranked at 30th position on a Global Manufacturing Index (WEF 2017-
18).
Total FDI inflows reached US$ 61.9 billion in 2017-18.
India is preferred by global manufacturing companies as an outsourcing
destination, due to cost competitiveness, favourable investment conditions,
better engineering and designing capabilities.

Products
Share of imports in
Consumption
by products in 2017-18
Major source of imports in 2017-18
VMC 31% Japan (24%), Taiwan (23%), USA (22%)
HMC 55% Japan (62%), Korea (10%), Italy (9%)
Turning
Centres 15% Japan (27%), Korea (14%), Taiwan (12%)
Grinding
Machines 47%
Japan (23%), Germany (22%),
Switzerland(9%)
Milling
Machines 34% Germany (31%), Japan (14%), China (12%)
VMC
This is a growing segment with high technology. Higher share of domestic
manufacturers indicate that acceptability for Indian brands. High imports from
Taiwan and Japan makes this segment highly price competitive.
HMC
Currently, this market is dominated by imports because of the demand for
technologically advanced machine tools. Majority of import is from Japan.
Indian manufacturers are less competitive in manufacturing technologically
high-end machine tools with multi axes movement and high spindle speeds.
Turning
Centres
Demand for Turning Centres is on the higher side. The Indian machine tool
manufacturers cover the popular range of turning centres, but only in
standard and basic designs.
Grinding
machines
Due to the incapability of Indian manufacturers to supply superior technology
machines, most of the demand in this segment is met through imports from
Japan & Germany.
Key areas for improvement
46
Products Market Constraints Strategy for Domestic Manufacturers
VMC
The current trend in machining
centres is to have additional axes
of movements to take on complex
machining requirements including
turning and grinding capabilities
on the machining centre
Focus on supplying compact machines
suitable for line integration for mass
production of auto components
HMC
Increasing demand for machining
centres with more axes of
movements
Supply machining centres having axes
of movements above 5, traverse rates
above 100 meters per minute and speed
ranging from 10,000 to 50,000 rpm
Turning
Machines
The Indian machine tool
manufacturers cover the popular
range of turning centres, but only
in standard and basic designs
Supply turning centres with global
standards having spindles with
integrated motors, speed of 6000 rpm
and slide traverse rates above 60 meters
per minute
Grinding
Machines
Machines lacking advanced
technology features
Focus on developing machines with high
accuracy and surface finish qualities
which will be at par with the import
quality machines
Recommendations
47
Challenges Strategic Recommendations
Lack of local developed
technology
Manufacturers may invest in developing R&D facilities and
make use of GOI sponsored Schemes
Highly dependent on
Imports
Manufacturers need to focus on developing high end
technologies and also on price competitive products
Low awareness /
Credibility of Brands
Interact more with user segments and provide demonstrations
of machines to increase awareness
Highly Price
competitive market
Manufacturers may focus on increase reach by offering better
service solutions
Lack of complete range
of products
Indian manufacturers still focusing on standalone products
while the global manufacturers offer complete solutions
Strategic Recommendations
Joint venture (JV) with
foreign companies
Indian companies should explore possibility of JVs with foreign
companies which would help in improving the technology
Continuous interaction
with end-user
segments
Manufacturers may continuously interact with the end user
segments to understand their future requirements. This would
help manufacturers to develop machines with requirements
matching with end user expectations.
Complete utilization of
government
supportive schemes
Industry need to utilize all the schemes sponsored by the
government to enhance technology levels and increase their
market share.
