ABOUT ONEone is a grassroots advocacy and campaigning organization dedicated to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in africa .

backed by more than two million people around the world and co-founded by bono, one achieves change through advocacy . we raise public awareness about the crisis of extreme poverty and its solutions, and together with our members we press political leaders around the world to support effective programs that are delivering real results measured in lives saved and communities stabilized .

one works in close partnership with african leaders, entrepreneurs and activists to support sustainable development and economic growth by africans, for africans . we support african efforts to demand greater democracy, accountability and transparency, because we believe good governance and an active civil society are essential to development .

one has played an important role, along with other partners, in successfully persuading governments to support effective programs and policies that are saving millions of lives and making a measurable difference in the fight against extreme poverty .

strictly non-partisan, one has offices in washington, d .C ., london, abuja, berlin, brussels, paris and johannesburg . one is not a grant-making organization and we do not solicit funding from the general public . as we have always said, at one, “we’re not asking for your money, we’re asking for your voice .”

“one is a combined effort of two organizations, the one Campaign and one action . one action is a

nonprofit advocacy organization under section 501(c)(4) of the internal revenue Code . one action seeks

to raise public awareness about the issues of global poverty, hunger and disease and to ask world leaders

to do more to fight these problems in developing countries . the one Campaign is a related section

501(c)(3) charitable and educational organization .

i first worked with one and its predecessor data while i was the nigerian Finance Minister and

have continued to work with them at world bank group in my capacity as Managing director .

in nigeria, we were trying to persuade our creditors to agree to a debt relief package that would

allow us to retain more of our domestic resources in order to support the immense needs of

our country . one was a valued – and at times, critical – partner in our efforts to convince donor

countries to agree .

dating back to this early work on debt, i have long been a supporter of one’s work . one is

core to keeping development front and center in the minds of policy makers, particularly in this

increasingly complex and constrained political and financial environment . their combination

of grassroots and grasstops advocacy makes one among the most effective campaign and

advocacy organizations in this space .

as budgetary challenges endure in both the north and south, it is clear that development

will require a strengthening of the partnership between the global north and south and will

increasingly rely on the most efficient use of limited resources . one and its partners are on the

forefront of this work .

one is a well-positioned advocacy organization to be catalyzing connectivity and partnerships

between people living in developed and developing countries . it is the largest membership

organization of its kind in the global north and is expanding its presence in africa, including

opening a regional office in south africa this year . this is an exciting time for one and for

development . i watch and participate with the anticipation of great things ahead .

Many organizations try to evolve to meet new and complex challenges, but most fail to do so . in

2010, one again proved it could rise to the occasion .

one continued its support for sustained financing for development, both because it works - as

highlighted in our “living proof” campaign - and because it is under greater threat than at any other

time in one’s existence . but, we also know that development assistance alone is insufficient to lift

hundreds of millions of people out of extreme poverty . though it provides critical life-saving and

opportunity-generating social services on the road to a better future, aid’s primary purpose is as a

bridge to sustained development .

so, despite the continued success of one’s model, we strongly believe our advocacy must continue

to evolve . at our March 2010 board meeting in Mozambique, one committed to invest even more

deeply in the issues of transparency, accountability and trade . in the past year, one worked with the

publish what you pay coalition to successfully push extractives transparency legislation in the us and

in 2011, we will continue to campaign for similar legislation in the uk, eu and other g20 countries .

one also strengthened itself as an organization . we added two board members, dr . ngozi okonjo-

iweala, an eminent nigerian economist and Managing director of the world bank, and dr . Mo

ibrahim, a pioneering sudanese entrepreneur and founder of the Mo ibrahim Foundation . we opened

an office in johannesburg and began creating an africa policy advisory board to ensure consistent

participation in development dialogues on the continent . we also expanded our reach in the north

by opening an office in paris . Finally, we strengthened our marketing capability to ensure one’s

membership continues to grow in both size and engagement . at the end of 2010, we had more than

two million members worldwide .

such significant momentum in the face of a challenging environment is a credit to one’s leadership .

i want to specifically recognize and thank david lane . as president and Ceo, david merged data

and one and shaped them into a cohesive global advocacy powerhouse . in january 2011, david

left to join the obama administration . we are extremely fortunate to have board member joshua

bolten, former Chief of staff to president bush, standing in as interim Ceo . david is sorely missed,

but he has left behind a highly effective, sustainable organization with the expertise to meet 2011’s

challenges head-on .

whether you are an active member, committed partner, or are just interested in learning more about

one, we urge you to read this annual report and to visit the one .org site .

FigHTiNg COrrUpTiON BY iNCrEASiNg TrANSpArENCY in 2010, one stepped up our work on enhancing transparency and good governance by contributing to a significant legislative victory in the u .s . that will increase transparency in the multi-billion dollar extractives sector and mitigate the “resource curse” that has affected so many african countries rich in oil, gas and other natural resources . too often corruption prevents the general populace in resource-rich developing countries from benefiting from their country’s natural resources . as a member of the publish what you pay Coalition, one successfully campaigned in the u .s . for the inclusion of the extractives industry transparency act, sponsored by senators ben Cardin and dick lugar, in the dodd-Frank wall street reform and Consumer protection act . the law requires companies listed on the new york stock exchange to report all payments to foreign governments for the extraction of oil, gas and minerals . the new rules will increase transparency and accountability by empowering local watchdogs, media and civil society to track payments, expose revenue gaps and hold governments accountable for providing public services . in 2011, we will continue fighting to ensure that this bill is not weakened as it proceeds through the securities and exchange Commission regulatory process and to get the european union and other g20 countries to adopt similar measures . the push for increased transparency and accountability will be a priority for one in the years ahead .

SUppOrTiNg THE gLOBAL FUND: NO CHiLD BOrN WiTH Hiv BY 2015one launched an important new campaign in september to save the lives of millions of babies by helping to end mother-to-child transmission of hiV by 2015 . in the lead up to the conference of the global Fund to Fight aids, tuberculosis and Malaria, we kicked off our “no Child born with hiV by 2015” campaign with a petition to world leaders and the release of a new video featuring pregnant women (one .org/us/actnow/globalfund2010) . response to the video and petition was very strong; more than 270,000 people signed on to the petition and the video has more than 285,000 views on youtube . this grassroots campaign, along with direct engagement of policymakers, resulted in important support for the global Fund . the u .s . administration pledged a 38-percent increase for the fund over the next three years, despite calls for cuts the previous year . this was the first time the united states has made a three-year pledge to the global Fund . France also increased its contribution by 20 percent and the european Commission increased its contribution by 10 percent . this resulted in $11 .7 billion total in resources pledged to fight these three diseases . the amount is short of what was needed, but was by far the biggest replenishment conference to date . to ensure the Fund is fully financed, one and other partners will continue to campaign in support of programs and initiatives that will help us meet this ambitious goal of ending millions of needless child deaths and infections by 2015 .

DEBT CANCELLATiON FOr EArTHqUAKE STriCKEN HAiTi after the devastating earthquake in haiti in january 2010, one launched a campaign calling on international creditors to cancel haiti’s $1 billion debt as part of a long-term reconstruction package . we worked in close consultation with the u .s . treasury to assess who held loans and for how much, and with obama administration officials, Congressional champions and coalition partners to build support for debt cancellation . tom hart, one’s u .s . government affairs senior director, testified before the house Financial services Committee on the need for debt cancellation and 200,000 one members from across the globe came together with 200,000 members from partner organizations to sign a petition calling for debt relief for haiti . the petition was then delivered to world leaders at the g8 Finance Minister meeting in Canada .

the campaign was a success and one members played an important role in the decision to cancel haiti’s debt . the entire g7 agreed to cancellation, as did the boards of the iMF, the world bank and haiti’s largest creditor, the interamerican development bank . the groundswell for one’s debt relief campaign was powerful and more than 80,000 new people signed up to become one members as a result . one has long been an effective voice on debt relief . through the haiti petition, we also had an opportunity to branch out, in a small way, with an expansion of our anti-poverty advocacy beyond africa .

one and its more than two million members around the world are a powerful force when they raise their voices in support of smart, effective initiatives that are making a measurable difference in the fight against extreme poverty and disease . in 2010, one used a variety of tools to engage policymakers and the general public in this work .

From providing policy analysis to campaigning to recruit new one members during the u2 360° tour, from convening meetings in government capitals to releasing a new video in support of our no Child born with hiV campaign, on ropelines and through by-lines, one pushed for change on a number of fronts . our staff and members campaigned for increased resources for programs to improve global health and food security, for transparency in the extractives industry, and for debt cancellation for haiti . we also launched an important awareness campaign called living proof that is getting the word out about the progress being made in africa thanks to investments in effective development programs and the hard work of africans themselves .

Campaigning around the world

THE LiviNg prOOF CAmpAigN in 2010, we launched living proof in europe . living proof is a campaign to share the progress being made in the fight against extreme poverty and disease thanks to smart aid and local leadership . research has shown most people in the general public are unaware of the significant progress that has been made as a result of effective programs like the global Fund and pepFar and the hard work of individuals on the ground who are transforming their communities and countries . living proof aims to change perceptions by creating compelling content and activities that communicate the facts and give a human face to the statistics . to ensure messages are informative and creative, while based in hard evidence, we have developed new research in this area, along with photos and videos, and shared that content with the wider ngo community through a database created to boost efforts across the sector .

one launched living proof in london on october 18 with an event headlined by bill and Melinda gates . the launch event was attended by leading media and political figures . it has helped us develop a wide set of living proof champions in the u .k ., from members of government to a diverse range of organizations such as Mumsnet, the royal College of nursing and the national union of students . one will be rolling out living proof in additional european countries in 2011 and broadening its reach in the u .s . and u .k .

U2 360° TOUr: ArCHBiSHOp TUTU gOES rOCK AND rOLL in 2010, one hit the road with co-founder bono and the u2 360° tour in europe, new zealand and australia to gain public support for the fight against poverty . during all 32 concerts, and thanks to incredible support by u2, we raised awareness about the progress being made in the fight against extreme poverty and disease by incorporating messaging into the shows and by recruiting new members from the audience . a video by archbishop desmond tutu thanking people from all over the world for raising their voices in the fight against extreme poverty and coming together as one was played at every show . that message resonated around the globe and by the end of 2010 one had recruited more than 97,000 new members through the u2 360° shows .

we worked with bono throughout the tour as he met with a series of world leaders, including russian president dmitry Medvedev and australian prime Minister julia gillard, to discuss the fight against extreme poverty and to press for support of our work on extractives transparency and for funding for the global Fund and the global alliance for Vaccines and immunization .

we also engaged many leaders at the u2 shows including german president Christian wulff, danish development Minister soren pind, Finnish prime Minister Mari kiviniemi, australian deputy prime Minister wayne swan and many others from the ngo and business sectors .

FigHTiNg HUNgErwe scaled up our work in the fight against hunger in 2010 by continuing to track, monitor and advocate for the implementation of the obama administration’s Feed the Future initiative . in response to proposed cuts, we ran a successful emergency campaign to increase funding for Feed the Future in the Fy2011 budget . our members made calls to Members of Congress, mailed hand-written letters, and personally delivered a petition with 34,824 signatures to congressional offices . at year’s end, the federal budget had yet to be decided, but one member voices had made their mark on the hill .

at a global level, we urged donor countries to uphold their commitments to the l’aquila Food security initiative which was agreed upon by 26 countries around the 2009 g8 summit . as part of these efforts, we convened a workshop in london with a set of partners to track the l’aquila commitments and to identify challenges, opportunities and common ground for moving forward in these pursuits . we strengthened existing relationships with partners in washington d .C . and rome and began engaging partners in other european capitals, including london, berlin, brussels and paris .

Page 7: TABLE OF CONTENTS - Amazon S3s3.amazonaws.com/one.org/pdfs/oneannualreport2010.pdf · 2011-05-11 · in 2011, we will continue to campaign for similar legislation in the uk, eu and

8 one 2010 annual report 9

we have always believed that the fight against extreme poverty and disease is a shared global challenge and opportunity . while other partner organizations, such as african Monitor, twaweza and the international budget project focus on ensuring leaders in developing countries are doing their part, we have focused our energies on ensuring that leaders in developed countries support smart, effective programs that are helping other countries lift themselves out of extreme poverty . one is focused on both the quantity and quality of development assistance, and in 2010 we took steps to strengthen our work on transparency and accountability in aid delivery .

as in past years, one launched the 2010 data report in conjunction with the africa progress panel’s annual report on how african countries are doing against commitments to fight extreme poverty and disease . a number of small strategic launch events around the globe resulted in important media pieces in key publications . the largest launch event was held in Canada because of its role as g8 host . one president and Ceo david lane joined belinda stronach, Chair of the belinda stronach Foundation, and yasmin warsame, a somali-Canadian model and activist, at a breakfast briefing with journalists . in partnership with Csis, one also hosted a launch event in d .C . panelists included david lane, joshua bolten, a Member of one’s board of directors, pearl alice Marsh, a professional staff Member for the house Committee on Foreign affairs, and richard downie, a fellow for the Csis africa program . the final analysis of the g8’s performance against the gleneagles africa commitments will be revealed in the 2011 one data report .

HOLDiNg THE g8 AND g20 ACCOUNTABLE this was an important year for global commitments to africa, with 2010 the deadline for many of the commitments that were made to africa at the 2005 g8 summit in gleneagles, and the deadline for the Millennium development goals (Mdgs) looming just five years in the distance .

accordingly, the theme of accountability ran strong throughout our 2010 portfolio of work . one’s 2010 data report, which tracks how the g8 is doing year-to-year against the commitments it made to africa at gleneagles, showed a very mixed performance . as a group, the g8 was on track to meet only 2/3 of its commitments . the poor group performance, however, masks differences at the country level . some g8 countries, such as the u .s, Canada and the u .k ., met their specific development assistance goals, while others, most notably italy, fell far short of what they promised, dragging down the performance of the g8 as a whole .

in a bit of popular campaigning to put pressure on italian prime Minister silvio berlusconi over italy’s poor performance, one experimented with an online video game, entitled “hurl berl,” that allowed users to toss berlusconi out of the g8 for not meeting his promises . though one had low hopes that this effort would move the prime minister, the game and a related petition garnered positive media coverage, shined a spotlight on the prime minister for breaking his promises, and recruited tens of thousands of new one members, including several thousand in italy .

in addition to putting accountability front and center in one’s 2010 data report, we also worked with the g8 host, Canada, to help produce the first-ever g8 accountability report . the Canadian government team conferred with the data report team to hone their methodology and interpretation of the g8’s commitments . since the data report’s goal is to make the g8 more accountable, having Canada as the g8 host get behind this first-ever report represented important progress .

ONE vOTE 2010 AND BUDgET NEgOTiATiONS iN THE UNiTED KiNgDOm ahead of the 2010 u .k . general election, one action asked all three major party leaders -- gordon brown, david Cameron and nick Clegg -- to go “on the record” by recording videos that explained what they would do to fight extreme poverty if elected . each video was accompanied by a six-point policy response to the “one Vote 2010 Manifesto for international development,” one’s policy priorities on effective aid, trade and governance issues for the next british government . Conducted by one action, the “on the record” campaign proved to be a useful tool for clarifying candidates’ views on development policy and for later holding newly elected officials accountable to their campaign promises . in addition to organizing events at both the Conservative and labour party conventions, we ran an online petition asking the public about their expectations for the next government and used these ideas to form a “thought book,” which one members presented along with the one Vote Manifesto to newly elected Members of parliament .

throughout the 2010 election season in the u .k ., we worked with all three major political parties to ensure that the budget for effective development assistance was protected during a time of financial pressure and severe budget cuts . as part of the “on the record” initiative we helped secure commitments from all three major political parties to meet the u .k . commitment of spending 0 .7 percent of gni on official development assistance (oda) by 2013 . this was confirmed in the budget following the election in which overseas development assistance and the national health service were the only two areas to escape budget cuts . the commitment will translate into £39 .7 billion in development assistance during the next four years .

ONE vOTE 2010 iN THE UNiTED STATES in july, the one Campaign and one action launched one Vote 2010, a nonpartisan effort to engage voters and federal candidates in america’s fight against global poverty and preventable disease during the 2010 u .s . election cycle . one Vote 2010 primarily focused on educating candidates who were competing in key open senate seats about america’s role in the fight against global poverty and disease .

as always, we worked with candidates from all parties . one action asked senate candidates to go “on the record” about their positions on development issues and will later make sure to hold those elected to their campaign promises . through the campaign, we interacted with senate candidates 185 times: 88 republicans, 87 democrats and 10 independents . at the end of the election one Vote 2010 had established solid relationships with six incoming senators of both parties .

BONO AND BOB gELDOF EDiT CANADA’S gLOBE AND mAiL NEWSpApEr one, bono and bob geldof brought some pop pressure to bear on the g8 when they took over “the globe and Mail,” Canada’s leading newspaper, and turned the paper’s focus to africa on May 10, just weeks ahead of Canada’s hosting of the annual g8 meeting . while one focused on the production of the print edition, kenyan blogger and activist ory okolloh served as guest editor of the digital edition of the newspaper, using that platform to bring in even more stories from the african continent to “the globe and Mail” audience . we worked extensively with the paper’s editors, who had never before turned the paper over to guest editors, to create the issue’s theme, “the african Century,” assign news stories and solicit op-eds from internationally recognized figures, including liberian president ellen johnson sirleaf . we also worked with bob, bono and the paper’s staff to write the editorials, design a one-of-a-kind front page and ensure the overall issue was as robust and effective as possible . president obama answered questions from bono about the u .s .’s africa policies and a variety of development issues, while 20 leaders from africa and around the world, including un secretary general ban ki-Moon and senegalese singer and activist youssou n’dour, submitted their thoughts on “how africa will Change the world .” the issue was a big seller with the public and sent an important message to Canadian policymakers ahead of the summit .

UN miLLENNiUm DEvELOpmENT gOALS SUmmiT we had several key objectives at september’s un Millennium development goals (Mdg) summit: to have policymakers leave the summit having decided upon concrete and politically binding agreements for reaching the Mdgs by 2015, to raise public awareness of the Mdgs and to secure specific commitments for replenishment of the global Fund . these were ambitious goals, but we chose to execute a highly visible campaign to pursue them because the Mdgs are core to our mission .

publically, one was highly visible at the summit . For the ten days leading up to the summit and throughout the proceedings, one members were captured on national television raising awareness about the Mdgs in the audience outside of “the today show” in rockefeller Center in new york . across the country, members supported our efforts in nyC through social media postings and media outreach, with one staff quoted in major media outlets in the u .s ., u .k ., germany and France . in an effort to bring more attention to the connection between women and development, we also published a new report called “the Future of africa is Female .” the report showed how investing in women in developing countries has a multiplier effect, bringing benefits not just to the women, but to their families and communities . it also highlighted how increasing investment in women can have a positive impact on good governance, agriculture and health .

we urged the obama administration to develop a plan for how countries could meet the Mdgs . we were very pleased to see in his speech to the u .n . general assembly, president obama called for a comprehensive development policy including a number of ideas that one advocated, such as focusing u .s . support on locally owned solutions, measurable results, governance, and economic growth for sustainability . we also pressed the european Commission to find ways of fighting corruption by demanding greater transparency in the extractive industries and discussed global Fund financing with german Chancellor angela Merkel .

overall, the results from the summit were good . the general assembly made a firm recommitment to the Mdgs, including the strongest language yet on the un process regarding mutual accountability . the un also launched a new $40 billion strategy to make progress on child and maternal health by galvanizing global commitments around a comprehensive plan to save 15 million lives by 2015 . in addition, many african governments made commitments to prioritize maternal and child health using their own resources . the commitments made at the un summit are key to one’s forward looking agenda and we will monitor progress against them .

LiSTENiNg AND LEArNiNg Trip TO AFriCA in March, several members of the one Campaign’s board of directors participated in a listening and learning trip to senegal, ghana, Mozambique and kenya to learn more about the importance of business investment, technology, accountability and good governance as drivers of development . Members of the board, including tom Freston, bono, bobby shriver and josh bolten, as well as other influencers, met and held discussions with several of our african partners and advisors, including ghanaian economist k .y . amaoko, kenyan activist john githongo and sudanese businessman and philanthropist Mo ibrahim, who subsequently joined one’s board .

throughout the trip, the delegation participated in meetings with a cross-section of civil society leaders including entrepreneurs, academics and grassroots activists . it was clear from these visits that aid – when programmed well and in concert with african leadership – is still important and can yield impressive results . we saw tremendous progress in the fight against mother-to-child transmission of hiV in our visit to tema general hospital in ghana, which has been able to greatly expand access to treatment and testing thanks to funding from the global Fund via one’s sister organization, (red) . in Mozambique, we saw important progress being made in agriculture productivity and nutrition during a visit to a sweet potato farming project called sasha (sweet potato action for health and security in africa), where workers learn advanced farming techniques while producing a nutritious crop that can reduce Vitamin a deficiency in children . also in Mozambique, prime Minister luisa diogo hosted the delegation at a women’s collective to discuss the specific challenges women entrepreneurs face when trying to gain access to capital .

our meetings also underlined the importance of good governance as a critical ingredient in development . we intend to take additional steps to help bolster transparency and accountability and to ensure aid is delivered in a way that doesn’t undermine good governance . we also heard consistently that more steps need to be taken to spur economic growth on the continent . small upticks in economic growth coupled with well functioning government institutions could drive enormous additional domestic resources to development, making aid the bridge it should be, rather than a permanent reality .

the insights gathered from these discussions reshaped our 2010 agenda and will continue to shape future work .

one has always worked closely with african policymakers and civil society leaders, using their advice and feedback to help shape our agenda; in 2010, we took several important steps to expand this work . From a listening and learning trip to senegal, ghana, Mozambique and kenya, in which our leadership focused on learning more about governance and business investment as drivers of development, to the opening of a new south africa office, one made significant progress in 2010 in deepening its roots on the continent .

mESSAgE FrOm ONE’S AFriCAN pOLiCY ADviSOrY BOArD mEmBEr, rAKESH rAjANi the uprisings in egypt, tunisia and in neighboring countries have ignited the global public imagination like nothing else . throughout africa, we feel a palpable sense of excitement, even as we debate if the revolution will travel up the nile and whether the new dispensations will live up to public aspirations . but regardless of what happens, people are drawing important lessons .

First, that despite the might of authoritarian regimes that have ruled for decades, change is possible .

second, that change does not come from the heavens or external saviors, but from people ourselves . global connections and tools can indeed help; many in egypt found inspiration in non-violent gandhian tactics and skillfully used al jazeera and facebook, but the nucleus of change is always people who care .

third, new technologies can democratize engagement at unprecedented levels . throughout africa vast majorities now have access to mobile phones, radio and tV, and increasingly the internet . these allow citizens – particularly young people – to get, make and share information, to

spread ideas and stories fast and wide, and in a manner that the authorities find hard to suppress .

Fourth, organizing today is more organic and spontaneous than in the past . it still takes leadership and courage, but of a different, more diffuse and open sort, no longer driven by the one charismatic hero . it’s noteworthy that the traditional development organizations and political parties did not feature centrally in this story .

Fifth, no level of economic progress (egypt and tunisia are among the more wealthy developing nations) can make up for affronts to dignity . the revolution in tunisia was sparked by a refusal to accept the humiliation of a hawker, and in egypt by a refusal to remain silent in the face of police brutality .

the events in north africa have made headlines, but throughout africa citizens are taking charge of their destiny every day . ordinary people are monitoring which water wells are working and why; whether funds are reaching the schools and children are learning; whether medicines and health workers are there for the poor . everyday people are taking action to make government responsive, resources transparent, and services work better . at twaweza we are fortunate to be a part of these efforts, and continue to be inspired by the can-do attitude and chutzpah of people .

these realities provide important lessons for one too . that while smart aid used right can be helpful, the better world we seek will be driven by citizen action to ensure a better use of resources . that access to information and communication can be more powerful than cash and buildings . the crucial potential of one then lies in connecting people who care in the rich world with people who care in the developing world, so that they can educate and inspire one another to create a more just world .

Expanding Efforts in africa

thanks to the generous support of the howard g . buffett Foundation, the one africa award – our only annual grant – continues to highlight the dynamism and achievements of african civil society organizations that are significantly contributing to building a better future for their communities, countries and continent .

with the one africa award, we aim to shine a spotlight on grassroots efforts that are helping to increase transparency, civic participation and accountability on the continent . after receiving an impressive 250 applications, we were honored to announce send-ghana as the 2010 winner . send-ghana is a policy research and advocacy organization working to promote good governance and the equality of women and men in ghana, with the vision of a ghana where people’s rights and well-being are guaranteed . send-ghana’s activities help to create better accountability practices, empower civil society and promote improved access to social services .

the 2010 one africa award helped to raise the profile of send-ghana both in ghana and throughout the continent, and allowed it to further its mission through increased programming . the proven impact of send-ghana’s work and its ability to effectively carry out development monitoring efforts has rendered the organization a reliable resource, not only to other civil society organizations, but also to the ghanaian government .

ONE OpENS NEW SOUTH AFriCA OFFiCE AND piCKS THE ONE AFriCA AWArD WiNNErone opened a new regional office in johannesburg in december following the hiring of new one africa director dr . sipho Moyo . dr . Moyo and her team, including edith jibunoh who runs our abuja office, are working to strengthen existing relationships on the continent, while building new alliances . as part of this work, we invited a number of external stakeholders to an advisory and consultation session to discuss how we should approach our work on the continent .

in 2010, we collaborated with path to emphasize the importance of MenafriVac, a revolutionary vaccine that is protecting people against life-threatening meningococcal meningitis across sub-saharan africa . path provided first-hand accounts and behind-the-scenes stories from the december kick-off of the mass vaccination effort that ultimately reached nearly 20 million people in burkina Faso, Mali and niger within a few months and for less than 50 u .s . cents per dose .

the development and implementation of the vaccination program was led by path and the world health organization with support from the bill & Melinda gates Foundation, and received key intellectual property contributions from the u .s . government and other supporters . throughout 2011, one will continue to work with path to raise awareness about the program’s impact on the people living in what is known as “the meningitis belt .”

on world aids day 2010, we joined the episcopal Church in the united states, the evangelical lutheran Church in america and the religious action Center of reformed judaism to spread the word about the progress being made in the fight against aids in africa and to renew the faith community’s commitment to continue the fight . with the help of (red)’s aids documentary “the lazarus effect,” we successfully engaged more than 300 congregations across the u .s . to screen the film for young adult groups and religious education classes, providing an opportunity for congregations to learn about the global Fund .

this action capitalized on the occasion of world aids day to strengthen our network of congregations and local leaders that will be active on our campaigns in 2011 and beyond, particularly lazarus sunday in april of 2011 .

in 2010, we partnered with the 1goal campaign to raise awareness about the 70 million children worldwide who do not have access to an education and to call on world leaders to ensure that every child can attend school by 2015 . 1goal made headlines during the 2010 FiFa Football world Cup in south africa – the first world Cup held on the african continent – thanks to the support of well-known footballers . in March, one cofounder bono joined 1goal activist jessica alba in a visit to the osu school in accra, ghana in order to highlight the importance of increasing access to education . one germany also did its part to bring attention to the 1goal campaign by organizing a football match in berlin during the world Cup between famous german footballers and students from the sophie-scholl school at the haus der kulturen, or house of the Cultures .

in december 2010, one u .k . began working with Mumsnet, an online mothers’ forum with more than one million monthly visitors . the collaboration included an online q & a session on world aids day with Melinda gates and one africa director dr . sipho Moyo during which they answered questions about aids, global health and development issues raised by members of the network . this event provided us with an opportunity to promote the living proof campaign to a large audience, including british political figures who regularly follow the Mumsnet website .

we also worked with Mumsnet on a joint delivery of one’s “no Child born with hiV by 2015” petition with 270,000 signatories to u .k . development Minister andrew Mitchell . pregnant members of Mumsnet joined one to lobby Mitchell and the u .k . government to support the global Fund .

We are proud to partner with a wide range of organizations engaged in the fight

against poverty and disease. By campaigning together, hosting events and

collaborating on key projects, we are able to make progress against common

goals. Below are just a few examples of ONE’s work with partners in 2010.

We strive to be an organization that continues to learn and improve, and

this means asking tough question about our work. It means listening

closely to each other, our partners and even our toughest critics. It

also means taking time to evaluate our performance, our work and

our vision for the future so that we can become even more effective in

achieving our mission. Here are a few lessons we learned in 2010:

LESSONS LEArNED iN 2010 AND LOOKiNg FOrWArD

in past years, one primarily focused on the g8 as the target of our campaigning work, but in 2010 we recognized that there are many global conversations about development that also require our attention and focus . as the g20, african union and briC (brazil, russia, india and China) countries become more influential, one must develop strong relationships with leaders of these groups . we believe we can use these forums to not only help guide our priorities, but also to seek out new opportunities to achieve greater progress .

Moreover, we recognize that g8 commitments often lack the enforcement mechanisms needed to turn words into action, and we need to do more to ensure that commitments are accompanied by accountability and transparency measures . as an example, the g8 is behind on meeting its collective commitment to africa made at gleneagles . lack of enforcement mechanisms has made it very hard to hold the g8 to what they promised . as we continue to work with the g8 and other global bodies in the future, we will put as great an emphasis on including provisions that will make commitments enforceable as on producing new commitments .

despite having an established profile in some markets and development circles, in 2010 one recognized the need to do a better job of proactively explaining our unique role as a non-profit organization that achieves change through education and advocacy . instead of raising money from the public as most other ngos do, one works to educate the public about the crisis of extreme poverty and its solutions, and then asks the public to join with our 2 million members to press policymakers to support effective government programs like pepFar and the global Fund that are saving tens of millions of lives around the world . in order to better highlight our unique approach, in late 2010 we began to re-emphasize our tagline: “we’re not asking for your money, we’re asking for your voice” and took other steps to explain our advocacy model on the one website and other social media platforms . while private philanthropy is critical, others are doing that well . we have chosen to focus our work on public education and government advocacy as tools in the fight against extreme poverty because of the enormous scope of the challenge and the depth of resources being deployed by developed country governments .

our experiences during the March trip to senegal, ghana, Mozambique and kenya reaffirmed our belief that more and better aid remains critical, but they also underlined the critical role of technology in driving innovative approaches to transparency, accountability and good governance . these three areas are important drivers of development and one will be putting additional emphasis on them throughout our advocacy in 2011 . policies that improve transparency – that allow people in developing countries to see where and how aid is flowing – will ensure that existing resources are better managed and more domestic resources are available for development .

we worked with african civil society organizations throughout 2010 to start outlining an agenda to achieve this and will continue this work into 2011 . one will also explore ways to increase the availability and diversity of foreign investment opportunities in africa by sharing the stories of successful investments and promoting global policy changes that can address the challenges to africa’s economic growth .

september 2010 marked ten years, or two-thirds, of the way to the Millennium development goals deadline . upon reaching this milestone, we paused not only to celebrate the progress made so far, but also to recognize the progress that still must be made in several key areas, such as the challenges in assessing programs . data collection required to produce development statistics remains very weak . these next five years are critical to achieving the Mdgs and improved statistics will help countries to better specifically target development activities where they are most needed and will work best . they will also better allow civil society and global leaders to monitor progress made towards the Mdgs . one will continue to campaign for the improvement of development statistics and will re-launch the data .org website in 2011 with the goal of highlighting the gaps in statistics and the effects on development outcomes .
