After six years of defeatedbudgets, Tabernacle residentsvoted to pass a $12.5 million budg-et that would lower the tax ratelevy by 2.21 cents for the averagehomeowner.

The voters approved the $6.4million dollar portion that theypay.

State aid, the Educational JobsFund, tuition and miscellaneousrevenue, pay for the rest of thebudget.

    The school district does not

have to worry about going back tothe drawing board and decidingwhere cuts need to be made.

Because the budget passed, theinitial cuts in administration willstay in effect, and all the educa-tion programs and staffing levelswill remain the same, officialssaid.

The budget will take effect inJuly of this year.

The Board of Educationworked very hard with the schooladministration and the communi-ty when developing this budget, superintendent George Raffertysaid.

Although the budget doesntallow the district to add any pro-grams, it also doesnt raise thefees on any extracurricular activ-ities, sports, art, music, libraryphysical education and severalothers.

The district is also able to keepsupport staff, maintain decreased

class sizes and the quality oftheir education.

The lower grades are able todecrease the class sizes, Raffertysaid. They thought the classsizes were getting too big.

One of the most important as-pects of the budget passing for

the district was maintaining thequality of education.

The school district went togreat lengths to get the budgetpassed and maintain the current

quality of education.I think the messag

Some say the best gift you cangive someone is the gift of life.Sean Cleggs parents, Gail andAndrew Clegg, were able to givethis gift to six people.

Sean was just 14 when he waskilled by a car on Hawkins Roadthree years ago. His parents made

the decision to donate all of hisorgans; his heart went to the first-ever heart recipient to give birthto twins.

We needed to have somethinggood come out of this tragedy,Gail Clegg said. We didnt have achoice in losing our son, but wedid have a choice in how he wasremembered.

Sean was a very bright andwonderful kid, he was so smart,Christine Walters, a family friendsaid. He won the John Hopkinsaward, he was going to be able togo there in the summer and par-ticipate in the program.

Six months after Seans death,Gail was introduced to peoplewho speak to schools about organ

donation. Gail became involvedand saw this as a way to honorSeans legacy.

Last year, Seans kidney recip-ient, Melissa, and I decided to

raise money to have a room at thenew Gift of Life Family House in

the stories of Melisshaving to travel an half each way every dsee her in the hospitalfast food and out of vchines, we decided thagreat thing to be a pagreat way to honor Sery.

    Burlington County taxpayers

received some good news thisweek, as Burlington County Free-holder Director Bruce Garganiopresented a $216.9 million budgetfor the year 2011 that reduces thecounty tax levy by $5,922,090.

This is the fourth year in a rowthat the tax levy has been cut. Thebudget was introduced onWednesday, May 4.

The budget, which calls forspending cuts in more than adozen departments, reducesspending by $4.3 million, and alsolowers the county property taxrate from 30.99-cents per $100 ofequalized valuations to 30.96-cents. According to county free-holders, this is the 21st year in a

row the tax rate has been re-duced.These multi-million dollar de-

creases come at a time whenCounty taxpayers need it most,Garganio said. This is reflective

of all the cuts and consolidationsthat have been made, and frankly, were not done yet. Rest assuredthat all the countys core pro-

    grams and services remain inplace.

The public hearing is sched-uled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday,June 8. The total tax levy is about$12.4 million less than the maxi-mum allowable amount designat-ed by the state.

The cumulative total of taxand spending cuts over the last

four years should send a strongmessage that we are seriousabout reining in the cost of gov-ernment. We realize we have an

obligation to our residents whoare still struggling to find employ-ment and pay the rent or mort-gage, Garganio said.

To cut costs, Garganio said thatmore than 300 staff positionshave been eliminated since Janu-ary 2008, and 165 vehicles from acounty fleet of more than 650have been taken out of service.

Experience in sports is every-thing, and Alpha Q learned thatthe hard way recently, droppingtheir season opener to the FreeAgents, 28-12.

It was our fist game and ourinexperience showed in a fewfacets of the game, we did some

things well and we are going tobuild on them as the season pro-gresses, head coach Bill Hillsaid. Our enthusiasm remainsstrong, we will make adjustmentsand be ready for next week.

One thing that was strongerthen any enthusiasm shown onthe field was the play of startingwide receiver Corinne Pawlows-ki.

Pawlowski recovered from anearly drop to go on to have anopening day to remember, pullingin five receptions and recordingone touchdown.

It was a good beginning for

me, but a tough loss so its sort ofbitter sweet, Pawlowski said. Our team really has a lot tolearn from this game.

One of those things Alphamust learn is how to improve asecondary that struggled im-mensely throughout the game.

Despite strong play from freeagent pick up and new startingsafety Collier Green who record-ed the games lone interception, the defense failed to record anoth-er stop throughout the game.

Coverage needs to get better, coverage defensive captain Rod-ney Konzelmann said.

Alpha Qs next game is againstTeam Awesome, a team that is nostranger to experience. TeamAwesome is the reigning champi-on of the co-ed Glory Day Sportsleague.

Its going to be tough, itsgoing to be hard, its going to be

Some cautionIts spring: Time to be careful

    I

ts spring. Flowers are blooming. It rains a lot. With luck,

the warmer weather means potholes can be filled soon. And

its also a dangerous time of the year.Rather, its dangerous for some people. Namely, high school

    seniors.

Seniors are but a few weeks

    away from springing into adult-

hood getting a real job, getting

    ready for college, etc. In-be-

tween their next lives and their

    current ones, though, are

events such as the prom and

graduation. And thats where the danger comes in.

Many, if not most school districts have taken precautions

when it comes to these events. They realize that, first, the kids

are going to be really excited. And, second, the kids might not

    use the best judgment.

Post-prom and graduation events now often are sponsored by

school districts. Of special note is Project Graduation, which

has been around for years and provides a safe place for teens to

celebrate their successful completion of high school. All of

these events are worthy of support.

But its important to remember that, just like cops cant pre-

vent every crime, schools can do only so much. They need the

support of parents who take the time to speak to their kids

about the dangers of too much partying, getting into a car with

someone who has been drinking or getting behind the wheel of

    a car while intoxicated.

Unfortunately, this time of year, which should be one of cele-

bration, almost always brings news of tragedy as well.

This prom-graduation season, we hope that every parent will

take a few moments to remind their soon-to-be-adults to be care-

ful and to not take unnecessary risks. Offer to pick them up,

check in on their plans for the big nights, do what you can to in-

still a little wisdom and restraint. You just might be saving

    their lives.

    Spring plans?
