Introduction This November, we celebrate the 7th anniversary of Art at Work month. Now a fall tradition, the diversity of offerings is stun-ning and truly illustrates the richness of our community. There is something for everyone to enjoy: music and dance perfor-mances, visual art exhibits, literary readings, lectures, workshops, even movement classes for children. Take this opportunity to experience something new in addition to attending an old favorite. Many of the activities are free and most are family friendly.

About this brochure: Events and activities are listed by date and category. There is a special section for ongoing visual art exhibits at museums, gal-leries, and alternative spaces. Some artists and arts organizations are offering special classes this month, but we also provide information for the many organizations who offer classes and workshops throughout the year for all ages and in all disciplines. We make every effort to ensure that information printed in this brochure is accurate; if you have any questions about program-ming or to confirm information, please contact the presenting organization.

Throughout this brochure, you will find seven broadsides which are collaborations between six local poets and seven local letterpress artists. When you are riding the bus this November, be sure to look up; you may just spot one of these broadsides inside the bus you are riding. You can pick up full-sized copies of the posters at various locations around Tacoma, including the museums.

We would like to call your attention to a few components sponsored by the Tacoma Arts Commission:

First, you are invited to attend the Art at Work Opening Party on October 29 at the Tacoma Art Museum. Join us for an evening filled with music by Pearl Django, poetry readings by our broadside poets, and a hands-on art activity. We will honor the winners of the 2008 AMOCAT Awards for community outreach in the arts, recognize those artists and organizations who received fund-ing from the Arts Commission in 2008, and just have fun.

You will notice the pull-out Studio Tour guide that lists all the artists who are opening their studios to the public on November 8 & 9. Each artist will be giving away a limited number of collectible cards that feature their artwork. These cards are designed to be assembled into a House of Cards. Visit every studio and collect the whole set!

Specifically for you artists out there, we are hosting a free Arts Symposium on November 15 & 16 where presenters will cover many topics relevant to being an artist and having an arts business.

We would like to extend our thanks to Pacific Lutheran University’s graphic design program. Through a unique partner-ship that provides students with real life design experience, we have benefited from the talents of student Brittany Staten and graphic design professor Jp Avila who designed all the Art at Work materials. We are grateful that they have lent their fantastic talents to this project.

You will find that the arts are both fun and essential to Tacoma, enlivening all corners of our community. Be an active par-ticipant in what is happening in Tacoma year-round. Programs and services like the ones highlighted in November exist for everyone to enjoy – you don’t need to be an artist to be a part of the arts!

Leading Ladies A sidesplitting comedy of mistaken identity and

harebrained schemes. Leo and Jack are two Shakespear-ean actors who are so down on their luck that they’re playing “Scenes from Shakespeare” on the Moose Lodge Circuit in Pennsylvania’s Amish country. When they read about a rich old woman in York, PA, who is about to die and leave her fortune to her two, long-lost nephews, whom no one has seen since birth, they decide to high-tail it to York to impersonate the two men. It’s only when they’re a few minutes out of town that they realize that the nephews are in fact nieces, and that they must appear in York as Maxine and Stephanie if they’re to collect the loot. Visual Art Tacoma Arts Commission Art at Work Studio Tours 2008 marks the 7th anniversary of the Art at Work studio tours, featuring 61 artists and 2 schools. The tours allow the general public the opportunity to see the spaces in and tools with which local artists create their work. It is also a chance to watch demonstrations, ask artists questions, purchase one-of-a-kind creations and, in some cases, even try your hand at creating your own masterpiece. This is a self-guided tour, free to the public. Use the enclosed studio tour brochure to enjoy a sampling of Tacoma artists’ studios. Each artist and studio will be giving away a limited number of collectible artist cards, which, when assembled together, create a house of cards. Each card features an image of the artists’ work and information about the artist. Visit each studio to collect the entire set of cards. 38 locations around Tacoma 10 am - 4 pm free 253.591.5191 www.tacomaculture.org

Dear Santa This farcical tale by Canada’s most prolific

playwright, Norm Foster, brings us to the magical, timeless world of the North Pole, replete with offices, workshops, elves and of course, the jolly old leader himself. The efficient-but-put-upon Chief of Staff, the dizzy housekeeper, the high-pressure sleigh salesman and the shop foreman who plays havoc with the English language are all hysterically funny and yet endearing. These wacky characters keep the place running like clockwork with the exception of a few in-house quirks and foibles. How does a hard working artist not only survive, but thrive in today’s world? This fast paced presentation is filled with down-to-earth tips and tactics about how to stand out in the crowd, how to make your business work better, both for you and for your customers, and grow your income as an artist.

Contrasts: A Glass Primer through October 12, 2009 Contrasts includes international, historically important and visually stunning works of art that are grouped to illustrate opposing ideas, techniques and styles.

Dale Chihuly: The Laguna Murano Chandelier through April 19, 2009 Laguna Murano Chandelier is a magnificent Neo-Baroque chandelier created by Dale Chihuly in collaboration with Italian glass masters Lino Tagliapietra and Pino Signoretto.

Dante Marioni: Form, Color, Pattern through March 8, 2009 A mid-career survey, the works demonstrate Marioni’s abil-ity to transform ancient Venetian techniques and classical forms into impressively scaled, vibrant, modern sculptural expressions, that are distinctly his own.

Mirrored Murrelets through December 2009 Joseph Rossano’s Mirrored Murrelets highlights the impact of a changing environment on the Marbled Murrelet, a small sea bird that nests primarily in the old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest. The installation comprises 275 mirrored glass birds that “float” just above the surface of the Museum’s mid-level reflecting pool.

White Light: Glass Compositions by Daniel Clayman through June 14, 2009 Comprised of 7 large-scale, dense, opaque sculptures that challenge viewers’ perceptions of glass art. Community Outreach by an Artist

Linda danforth 253.238.1006 [email protected] www.TacomaArtPlace.org

2008 AMOCAT Arts AwardsIn celebration of Art at Work month and in recognition of the importance of vision, dedication, and action in creating a lively arts community, the Tacoma Arts Commission honors the following participants for their contributions to the arts.

Tacoma jewelry artist Linda Danforth specializes in one-of-a-kind and limited-edition pieces. Her jewelry is found locally at Dame Lola and SAVI Day Spa, and at various other boutiques and spas.

Two years ago, when searching for an affordable studio in which to move her jewelry business and finding nothing available at the price she’d hoped for, Linda opened the Jet Artist Cooperative. Six months later she opened the Broadway Art-ist Cooperative at the other end of town. Both studios are open-concept with the mission to provide affordable workspace and support for artists. More recently, Linda has mixed her jewelry design and business skills with her other passion for global poverty alleviation through micro-entrepreneur pro-grams. Based on a model seen in Mali, Linda built an advisory board to develop a plan for a similar cooperative in Tacoma. One year ago this month, Tacoma Art Place opened - our own non-profit art facility to bring affordable access to art equipment to the community for creative pleasure or a business effort. Tacoma Art Place hopes to be sustainable with volunteer support from the community and to provide support for artists and aspiring artists for years to come.

Community Outreach by an Organization

King’s BooKs 218 St. Helens Avenue253.272.8801 www.kingsbookstore.com

King’s Books is tyrannically run by two felines: Miko is more prone to the visual arts and Harriet is more inclined to the literary. With this dual focus, the bookstore strives to be a community center for arts. To this end, they work with community organizations to host a wide variety of events to highlight the various communities of Tacoma.

King’s Books showcases the letterpress and book arts community with such an-nual events as the Wayzgoose festival and the Book Arts Auction. Working with publishers and the local poetry community, they host frequent author and poetry readings. King’s Books also seeks to foster a culture of word nerds with such events as the annual Spelling Bee and the Smartest Person In Tacoma Contest. Intel-lectual freedom and the freedom to read are celebrated with annual events around Banned Books Week. Lastly, the bookstore provides a venue for discussions of politics and peace.

King’s Books also partners with public schools on events to raise money, for both school activities and school libraries, and to foster the next generation of readers.

hoteL Murano 1320 Broadway Plaza 253.572.3200www.hotelmuranotacoma.com

Hotel Murano features glass artists from all over the world, educating guests on various glass art techniques and introducing artists from the United States, Europe and Asia. With more than 45 artists showcased in the lobby, the exterior and the guest floors, every step in the hotel is an artful journey. From its exterior entrance where Costas Varotsos – internationally renowned Greek artist – has created a 104-foot masterpiece of glass called “Orizon” (horizon in Greek), sharing its magnifi-cence with all of downtown Tacoma, to the interior where art is deeply integrated in function and design, the hotel will stimulate anyone’s artistic sense.

The Hotel Murano supports Tacoma’s already established art community by partnering with the Museum of Glass and the Tacoma Art Museum to offer hotel packages to guests and supporting their fundraising efforts. They also offer glass art tours of the hotel, providing yet another attraction for the city’s visitors and na-tives and further lifting the community to an art destination.
