There was a time when creativity was not as valued in education as it is today, especially when teaching subjects like maths and grammar. There was instead a distinct emphasis on ensuring students thought in a particular, ordered way to obtain the correct and expected answer. Creativity was often treated as a secondary area of the curriculum and regulated to subjects like art.

To suggest that creativity would one day become embedded in all key learning areas taught at school might have once been considered radical. Now creative thinking in education is a zeitgeist of 21st Century learning. Creativity is systematically taught and developed across the entire curriculum, from Kindergarten to Year 12.

The new NSW Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum describes creativity as thinking broadly, adventurously and deeply. Creativity is about using reason, logic and resourcefulness. It is about looking for new ways of doing things. While the basics of grammar and arithmetic, for example, continue to be of the highest importance in education, the ability to think in ways that demonstrate new knowledge and understanding is also very valuable.

Positioning Ashfield Public School as a school for the 21st Century learning includes ensuring a robust educational environment that fosters creativity. This is about maintaining a whole school learning culture where teacher and student are focused on capturing new and innovative ideas and engaged in challenging and interesting learning situations.

In Term 3 Ashfield Public School will implement a whole school initiative, Here in our Garden. By focusing on the garden spaces within the school, this initiative will provide an authentic learning context for students to develop creative

thinking skills through inquiry, imagination and innovation. Student achievement will be

showcased at The Garden Festival at the end of Term 3 in a variety of forms including films, projects and sculptures.

Over the coming weeks teachers at Ashfield Public School will develop rich tasks for the Here in our Garden initiative. These tasks will embed outcomes from the new maths and science syllabus and involve children using creative thinking to make knowledge and come to their own personal realisations and understandings. Designing and constructing a bird house based on mathematical data collected during the school day is an example of such a task.

At Ashfield Public School creativity is important. Creativity improves the self-esteem, motivation and achievement of learners. It makes learning more interesting and calls students to discover things for themselves, to be more open to new ideas and challenges and be more able to solve problems. Creativity in education is about developing the capacity of people for work and life in the 21st Century.

Damien Moran Principal Ashfield Public School

FROM THEPRINCIPAL’S DESK

Creativity, ingenuity and innovation are the keys to success in the evolv-ing global economy. To prepare young people for work and life in the 21st century, educators must cultivate students’ creativity.

STAGE 2STAGE PAGESymbio Wildlife Park ExcursionOn Tuesday, 3rd of June, Stage 2 students went on an excursion to Symbio Wildlife Park in Helensburgh. We went on a bus straight after morning lines; it took approximately 50 minutes to get there. When we got there everyone was so excited. First we were split into 5 groups and I was in group 5 with Mr Cartwright. We saw lots of animals and my favourite was the Meerkat. It was very cute.

My favourite part was when we were feeding the kangaroos. When we were feeding it, it felt ticklish and you could feel the kangaroo’s teeth. We were very lucky because we had more food left so we got to feed it a second time. In my group were my friends Isabelle and Avasa. After that we sat down and a lady who worked there showed us some animals that the public were not allowed to see. There was a dingo, possum, snake and a wombat. It was really fun there. Then we had to get the bus back to school. When we arrived it was past home time.

STAGE 3STAGE PAGECanberra TripDay 1:

On 16th June Ashfield Public School Stage 3 students, Mr Moran, Miss Stansbury and Mrs Metcalf went on their school camp. Everyone was asked to arrive at 6:15am, in darkness, to get ready for the 3 hour trip to Canberra. When all 46 campers arrived and after sorting out our luggage, we went on the bus. Our Principal Mr Moran gave each of us a number from 1-46 to remember throughout the camp for our safety when getting on and off the bus and going into attractions.

We went to a place called Sutton Forest, which was about an hour away, to rest and have our morning tea. We then continued on our trip to Canberra once again.

The first stop in Canberra was the Old Parliament House. When we got inside, the supervisor told us to wear gloves so that we

didn’t damage a n y t h i n g . Some of us were sitting in the VIP spot and some were sitting in the

representatives of NSW and Queensland. The supervisor then chose 2 people to show how people used to dress in the Senate in the olden days. The people were Jermal who was dressed as the first Governor General and Prapimporn, dressed as the first ever woman Governor General. She also told us a story that there was once a politician that made a speech going for a huge amount of time of 12 hours from night to morning. From the next day they made a rule that you could only say your speech for 20 minutes and there is now also going to be a timer.

After that, we went to the New Parliament House that was right across from the Old P a r l i a m e n t House. In the parliament we were guided by a person called Suzanna. She guided us through the parliament.

We got an opportunity to listen to the speeches of some politicians in the Senate and the House of Representatives, which gave us some ideas of what politicians talk about and how it works. She also told us that there are 2500 clocks placed in the Parliament House. Do you know why there are so many clocks? Well, it’s because the parliament is so big and the clocks signal if the politicians need to go to either the Senate or the House of Representatives by the clock going red for Senate and green for the House of Representatives. The clock only rings for 4

minutes which is the time you need to get to the Senate or the House of Representatives. After 4 minutes no one’s allowed to get in, not even our Prime Minister! When we were on our way out we met Anthony Albanese and he spent a few minutes with us. People asked him many questions but after a few minutes he said he had to go back to work.

Next, we went to a park to have lunch. After eating our lunch we ran around the park for some exercise. Later on, we went to the War Memorial. The War Memorial does not only have names of people who died in war, it includes war time planes, guns, army clothes, vehicles, helmets, rooms for watching TV relating to war and more. After looking around we went to the ceremony which was held at the top of the memorial. There, we sang our national anthem and people placed flowers for the people who had served for our country. We drove to our cabins at the Gold Creek Tourist Resort. There, we had our showers and dinner as well as watched some of the Fifa World Cup matches.

Later on we got ready to go to the Dinosaur Museum which was down the road. Once we got there we saw a few model dinosaurs at the entrance as if they were waiting for us. At the entrance we met our guide that taught us lots of things about the dinosaurs and the 3 dinosaur time periods the Jurassic, Triassic and the Cretaceous and she told us the names of the dinosaurs living in each period. When a dinosaur is born it is as big as your hand. When it is 2 years old, it doubles your height and when it’s 8 it’s as big as your school! We learnt how you can differentiate between a male and a female

dinosaur. We also felt real dinosaur fossils and poo. Finally, we went back to our cabins to sleep; some people at 9:30pm and some later.

Day 2

At 6:15am we got up and went to breakfast at 6:45am. After breakfast we went to Questiconwhere we went to Galleries 1, 2, 3

After that, we went to the National Art Gallery where we split into 3 groups. We saw many famous artworks such as the statue of a mother breast-feeding the baby from the 6th century and some paintings that were fascinating. We went outside to eat our pizza lunch. There were 3 types, vegetarian, meat lovers and ham and pineapple. After we finished eating, we boarded the bus and drove for approximately 3 hours and arrived back at school at 4:30pm.

Public Speaking FinalLast Wednesday (18th June 2014) Lydia Richards (3K), Arya Ahluwalia (3/4P), Daniel Guevara Morales (5/6M) and Yahya Faid (5/6S) represented our school at the local finals of the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition which was held at Kegworth Public School.

Ashfield has some pretty tough competition and were up against various schools in the local area including Ashbury, Lewisham, Haberfield and Croydon Park.

The students had to present a prepared speech on ‘Multiculturalism’ and then were given 5 minutes to prepare an impromptu speech. The junior topic was ‘Magic, and the senior topic was ‘Goals’.

All of the students did a brilliant job and spoke clearly, confidently and were very eloquent in their delivery.

Ashfield has reason to celebrate as Daniel Guevara Morales took out the winning spot with first place! Daniel has proven that Ashfield Public School is a force to be reckoned with!

Daniel will now move forth to represent Ashfield at the Regional Finals of the competition.

Public Speakers, you should be so pleased with your effort and good luck Daniel at the regional finals!

Mrs Mac’s Music MessagesHello Everyone! It’s end of Term 2. I can’t believe half the year has passed. For many of the stages we have continued our work on treble and bass clef, pentatonic scale, metre and song structure. For stages one to three we will have our end of term assessment next week. The review this week has gone really well so I have high expectations for the results.

The Senior Choir lead the performance of Move Your Feet to get people excited about the FIFA World Cup. The Junior Choir helped by singing along in the audience. Our next performance has been confirmed and will take place during Education Week on July 29 at Ashfield Mall from 12:00pm to 12:30pm. Each choir will sing two songs and we hope any family who can attend will do so.

See you next term!

Jessica Mauboy

Jessica Mauboy is an Aboriginal singer who performed in the 2008 Australian Idol. She did not win but came runner up. Jessica has made many albums and won a few ARIA awards and Music TV awards. She has represented Australia in the Eurovision but sadly we did not win. She is one of the greatest artists I ever heard or seen. Her new album “Never Been the Same” has come out already and I think the songs are great. She will be holding the Australian and Aboriginal flag at the Olympic Games in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro.

Maths with KevinDecimal Multiplication

Decimal multiplication might sound complicated so I thought that I would teach you how to do

it! For example: 8.4 x 2 = 16.8. When you do the sum you can pretend that the decimal point is not there and treat it like a normal sum, for example 84 x 2 which equals to 168. Then if there is 1 decimal point in the sum then there is one decimal point in the answer which is 16.8.

I hope you have learnt how to do decimal multiplication.

State of Origin

The Blues went head to head against the Maroons on Tuesday 18th June. For most of the time, Maroons were dominating over the Blues. However, Trent Hodkinson scored the equalizer try and then the kick that resulted in the Blues’ victory. The Blues had strong defence and the Maroons had strong offence

and played well. The Maroons were leading 4-0 but the tables turned at the 71st minute when Trent Hodkinson scored the first try for the Blues. An octopus named Colin predicted that the Blues would win, that looked unlikely until the 71st minute. The final score was 6-4 in favour of the Blues. This is the first time the Blues won State of Origin in eight years

Stage 3 Canberra TripLast Monday, some stage 3 students went to Canberra for a one night camp. We departed Ashfield Public School at 6:45am. After 2 hours of our trip, we stopped at Sutton Forest for a break. Our trip to Canberra took approximately 4 hours. When we arrived in Canberra, we went to the Museum of Australian Democracy where we stayed for about 30 minutes. We next went to the new Parliament House and stayed there for 1 hour. After lunch we drove up to Mount Ainslie Lookout to see the view of Canberra. In the afternoon we went to the Australian War Memorial for 2 hours. At the Australian War Memorial, we looked at some videos, medals, guns, vehicles and clothes. At 5:30pm, we arrived at Gold Creek Motel and had dinner and afterwards went to the National Dinosaur Museum. We saw dinosaur bones and a dinosaur poo that had fossilised.

On our return to our motel, we showered and went to bed. Most of us went to sleep straight away because we were so tired but some people stayed up later. The next morning we were woken up by the teachers at 6:30am. We had to pack up before breakfast and make sure that our rooms were tidy. We were lucky enough to have a breakfast of cereal, juice, toast, bacon and eggs if you wanted. Everyone had to help load the bus and we then drove to Questacon. I think most kids would have liked to have stayed there all day!

Our last visit during camp was the National Art Gallery of Australia where we participated in a tour. Pizza was delivered afterwards for lunch. What a camp!

Canberra Camp SurveyOn 16th June 2014 the Stage 3 students from Ashfield Public School had the opportunity to go on a camp to Canberra. For some of you who might not know where Canberra is located, it’s 3 hours south west of Sydney and it is also the capital city of Australia. Before going to Canberra we decided to ask the students their opinions about what they’re looking forward to the most of all about camp?

We are feeling really excited to go to 1. different places.

The tight schedule will make us really 2. tired.

The Questacon is going to be the most 3. interesting.

It is going to be great.4.

Can’t wait to go to the Dinosaur Museum 5. during night time!

So excited to see the names on the War 6. Memorial.

We might see someone from the 7. parliament!

Talking to friends in the bus.8.

Sleeping at night time after coming back 9. from the dinosaur museum.

Going to have a wonderful time eating 10. pizza. YUM!

We had a wonderful time at camp. Most of the people who went to camp seemed to enjoy their time. We feel sorry for those who for some reason, could not make it to camp this year. We hope that the people who could not make this year will be able to attend next year in 2015.
