There are 818 steel bridges with total length of 30,068m. Some notable bridge include Long Bien bridge, Do Len bridge, Nam O bridge etc.

Many bridges are rusted and damaged so that they cannot ensure train operation safety. Thus, it is necessary to repair, upgrade, and replace.

In recent years, Vietnam Railways has carried out many projects to replace and repair these damaged steel bridges to ensure train operation safety and meet the increasing transportation demand, including the project for separation of Tam Bac combined bridge and the project for railway bridge safety improvement on Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh City railway line.

Advantages

Both design consultants and construction contractors have knowledge and experience in constructing steel bridge.

The structure of steel bridge is fixed, the components are produced and processed at the factories. Therefore, it is easy to examine and supervise the structure.

Disadvantages

Constructing steel bridge and ensuring train operation safety at the same time requiring modern technology and scientific construction method.

It is essential to meet the construction schedule while still having to ensure quality requirements.

Steel is an expensive material so it is necessary to strictly supervise the quality and price of input materials

Examine the quality of design documents and preparation works of

construction contractor.

Examine the quality of materials, equipments

and labor at the construction site.

Supervise the quality of preparation work at the

construction site.

Requirements for supervisors

7

ASEAN RAILWAY CEOs’ CONFERENCE36

thTowards Closer ASEAN Connectivity

Technical Working Group

Supervise the construction quality of the works.

Supervise the construction schedule.

Supervise the construction volume and cost.

Supervise the implementation of ensuring traffic safety, labour safety, fire prevention and environmental sanitation.

Requirements for supervisors

ASEAN RAILWAY CEOs’ CONFERENCE36

thTowards Closer ASEAN Connectivity

Technical Working Group

Supervisors must have qualifications, experiences and professional ethics; frequently upgrade knowledge and new construction technologies; clearly know the codes and regulations in quality management and supervision.

Supervision contractors must have clear work assignment: Chief supervisor, on-site supervisor; supervisor on the construction volume, etc.

Strictly supervise the construction of upper structure in order to return the rail line satisfying quality and technical requirements.

9

Measures applied in supervision

ASEAN RAILWAY CEOs’ CONFERENCE36

thTowards Closer ASEAN Connectivity

Technical Working Group

The blocking time for construction is very short, therefore supervisor must closely cooperate with construction contractor to ensure the quality and safety of the construction.

Strictly supervise the components manufactured in the factory.

Tam Bac Bridge is one of 03 bridges which were constructed to separate road from the existing combined bridge. Tam Bac Bridge started constructing on December 26, 2011 with total investment of VND 300 billions. On April 27, 2013 the project was completed and Tam Bac Bridge was officially put into operation.

Beside the newly road bridge, the old steel bridge is generally changed by replacing the old bridge floor with a new beam for the railway. The bridge is reinforced and repainted, renovated and reorganized the traffic fully close with road vehicles.

This separation reduces the potential risk of traffic accidents and traffic congestion, improves the flow of traffic, and creates highlight points for urban city of Hai Phong.
