Volunteer with TECTanzania Education Corporation (TEC) provides support for Tumaini Junior School in Karatu, Tanzania. Tumaini Junior School is a private but non-profit English Medium School whose mission is to educate the future leaders of Tanzania. Currently, only 30% of students in Karatu are passing their national exams. Due to this and other preventing factors, only 11% of Tanzanian youth continue their education past primary school. Tumaini is working with TEC to change this and is proud to report that 100% of its students have passed their national exams to date. It is ranked number 1 out of 90 primary schools in Karatu, and 40th of 15,656 primary schools in Tanzania- public and private. As a volunteer at Tumaini, you will have the opportunity to work alongside a dedicated Tanzanian and American staff to make a positive impact on the students of Tumaini and the overall community of Karatu.

About the Position:We are seeking a highly motivated and independent volunteer to help set up our new public library and computer lab. This individual will work closely with the Tumaini librarian and staff to create and implement new systems related to both of these spaces. Specific job responsibilities include:

Create a system for categorizing books and resources according to subject and reading level. Unpack and organize books onto shelves in the new library. Work with librarian to create policies for student and community use of library resources. Train students and staff on proper library usage in weekly workshops. Establish a system for checking library books out.

Qualifications and Skills Needed Minimum 4-year university degree Two years library school experience preferred Flexible, organized, collaborative Experience traveling or living abroad preferred Computer Skills a plus

Duration: 6 weeks minimum with possible extension. Start June 1, 2014
