Daughter of Neptune

Payton Westfall

Dear MCYC, I wanted to thank you for having me as the daugh-ter of Neptune for 2012. I very much enjoyed the ladies dinner at the club, I got to see people that I have not seen for a while. The club looked amazing and I wanted to thank Brian and Shelly again for having me as their daughter of Neptune for our club’s 50th year. I hope everyone will come join us at closing day, October 6, 2012 at DYC. Please remember that we have horse shoes to play, line toss to win, canon fire to make a big bang and don't forget to buy raffle tickets as it will help build new docks like the ones at coon island. I am going to Albany to go to school. This has been a wonderful year with a ride from Astoria to Portland on a Coast Guard ship, a night in Astoria with the other daughters, the starlight parade with the other daughters and father Neptune. We were in two parades. Opening day we did life jacket safety in St. Helens, and I am sure that I have forgotten something. I wanted to thank Diana Blatter for her hard work and to keep us girls going. We all love you Diana. Thank you again Brian and Shelly I love you both. HOW THE WORLD WORKS TODAY... If a man cuts his finger off while slicing salami at work, he blames the restaurant.

If you smoke three packs a day for 40 years and die of lung cancer, your family blames the tobacco company.

If your neighbor crashes into a tree while driving home drunk, he blames the bartender.

If your grandchildren are brats with-out manners, you blame television.

If your friend is shot by a deranged madman, you blame the gun manu-facturer.

And if a crazed person breaks into the cockpit and tries to kill the pilot and the passengers kill him instead, the mother of the crazed deceased blames the airline.

I must have lived too long to under-stand the world as it is anymore.

So, if I die while my old, wrinkled ass is parked in front of this com-puter,

I want all of you to blame Bill Gates… okay?

Chaplain's Log - October 2012

Long before Jesus was born the Romans were famous for building sophisticated roads. They made them out of stones, mortar, sand…anything that worked for them. These roads allowed them to move materials, armies, etc easier and quicker around Europe.

There is another Roman Road I would like to tell you about. It comes from the letter to the Romans in the New Testament. It’s one of the ways to explain God’s plan of salvation for us. Paul starts out the letter by telling us:

1) Who needs salvation? Everyone needs salvation because we have all sinned. Romans 3:10 & 23 says “No one is righteous—not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” ... For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

2) Why do we need salvation? The price (or consequence) of sin is death. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. – Rom 6:23

3) How do we get salvation? Jesus Christ died for our sins. He paid the price for our death. – But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners– Rom 5:8

4) How do we actually receive this salvation? We receive salvation and eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. Romans 10:9-10 says this “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved ... For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

5) What are the results? Salvation through Jesus Christ brings us into a relationship of peace with God. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

Have a great month.Chaplain Dave

Life jackets (PFDs) are Still the Most Im-portant Step Boaters Can Take to Ensure Their Safety on the Water

Boating fatalities jumped 12.8 percent in 2011 and are now at the highest level since 1998, according to the U.S. Coast Guard's just released report 2011 Recreational Boating Statistics.Last year, 533 of the 758 boating fatalities resulted from drowning, with 84 percent of the drowning victims not reported as wearing a life jacket. The Coast Guard is urging recreational boaters to make sure everyone on board wears their life jacket at all times on the water.

Yea, I know, they are uncomfort-able and hot, etc., etc. May be time to invest in some inflatable types that are less restrictive and easier to wear.

I received an envelope in the mail from Ken Larson and thought it was about construction but it was an old letter, which I thought you might find interesting.History of Multnomah Channel Yacht ClubOur family had just returned to Red’s moorage (Ed. Note: Now Larson’s moorage under the Sauvie Island bridge) after a pleasant day on the river. I stopped to speak to Marguer-ette Persinger who I met on the dock. In our conversation I said, “Marguer-ette, I do not know any of the folks along the moorage. Others may feel the same. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could start a little club on the moor-age, and the folks could go out boating together.” She replied, “that would be nice.” This thought was mentioned in conversations with her from time to time..One day Marguerette told me that another couple by the name of Mert and Marv Bales would be interested in having a club on the moorage. Time went on and one day we had stopped at Red’s gas dock to pur-chase gas. As Marguerette was filling the gas tank she said the Bales were in her house having a cup of coffee. She asked us to to come have a cup of coffee and meet them. So we met the Bales. Our conversation led to the discussion of starting a club. I asked Marguerette and Red if we would have their permission to have a club on their moorage, and they gave their consent.Marguerette brought our her record book of names of the folks on the moorage. We decided she and I would send penny post cards to each of them, asking if they would be in-terested in having a club there and asked for an RSVP. The response was very good, so we three couples set a time, and we met in Red’s workshop. Marguerette and I called the folks that had shown interest and we had a meeting at which the group decided to start a boating club. From there the group grew and became the Multno-mah Channel Yacht Club.

The Origination of MCYC BergieThe club members had voted on a name for our new club, and had decided to call it the Multnomah Channel Yacht Club, so now we needed a bergie. Commodore Marv Bales (Ed. Note: Marv was the first commodore - 1962) asked that each member take part in making up a sample of a bergie and bring it to our next meeting. Everyone brought their samples the following meeting, and several samples were tacked up on the door in Red’s shop, unknown to each other as to who had designed them. After much deliberation, the members voted on their choice, which is still the MCYC bergie. It was designed by Trudy Carlson. Early Days Of Multnomah Channel Yacht ClubAfter the first few meetings of the newly organized club, held in the shop of the Red Persinger’s moorage it was felt by the members that in order to avoid any personal liability or tax liability, that the club should be incorporated. Cliff Carlson obtained the free services of a young attorney by the name of Evans to draw up the bylaws and articles of incorporation. The first major project of the club was to obtain a club house. Our second Commodore, Frank Vanakan, loaned the club $3000.00 to enable us to buy a boathouse that was for sale up on the Columbia. It was towed down to Red’s by our member Walt Tews. With free labor and materials furnished by our members it was con-verted into what is now our club house. (Ed. Note: the one pictured on the top of our current roster) Each member then loaned the club what they felt they could, from $50 to $100, interest free, with the under-standing that it would be paid back if and when funds were available. This money, together with other funds raised from club functions, was used to repay Vanakan and to provide funds to complete the club house.Furnishing The Club House Bill Lalor, a member who was in the appliance business, found a good buy on a stove and refrigerator. We pur-

chased a coffee urn from Bob Fryer. One morning I was reading the news-paper and noticed a Tradewell ad that read, “Buy five dollars worth of gro-ceries and get a free place setting of Melmac dishes.” I immediately went to the phone and called MCYC members and all my friends to ask them to buy groceries and get a place setting for the club. By the time the offer expired, we had 100 place set-tings of an orange floral pattern with brown cups and saucers. Shortly after, Fred Meyer advertised a free place setting of flatware with a five dollar grocery purchase. Back to the phone I went, and by the time that offer was discontinued, we had col-lected a few over 100 place settings of flatware. Now we needed to have some glasses. No store came through for us so Cliff Carlson shopped around the wholesale houses for the best buy on glasses. All the ladies in the club donated things they were no longer in need of from their homes. Still needing some things for the kitchen, we had a galley shower. Each meeting night we had to borrow chairs. Cliff Carlson got permission from St. Johns Bachelor Club, of which he was a member, to borrow chairs. Every meeting night, Cliff and Roxy Nelson, using Roxy’s pickup, would pick up and return the chairs. Then members learned that Abby Rentals had a sale on used folding chairs for $1.50 each and we pur-chased chairs. Dewey Charlton, another member, borrowed tables for our dinners from the Sauvie Island school. We voted to purchase ten eight foot folding tables. For several years members saved MJB coffee lids which we turned in for coffee urns and free cases of MJB coffee. Trudy took responsibility for collecting these and turning them in until that offer also expired. We didn’t have committees in those early years, we made plans and everyone pitched in to help. This is what made our club such a close, friendly and happy group.Information provided by Cliff and Trudy Carlson
