6.3 Placethemotorinpositionandalignthemountingholesyouhavechosentousewiththeslotsinthemotormount.Installthescrewsandwashersandtightenthemlightlytoallowthegearmeshtobeadjusted.Donotworktosetthegearmeshcorrectlyatthistimeasthepiniongearlocationonthemotorshaftmustbesetproperlyfirst.

6.4 Viewingthemodelfromtheside,notetheheightofthepiniongearonthemotorshaftinrelationshiptothemaingear.Thetopofthepiniongearshouldbesetslightly(about1/32”)abovethemaingear.Loosenthepinion’ssetscrewandadjustthepinionheightasnecessaryuntilitiscorrect.Then,securelytightenthesetscrew.

6.5 Loosenthemotormountingscrewsjustenoughtoallowadjustmentofthepiniongear/maingearmeshbymovingthemotorforeandaftonthemotormount.Whenthegearmeshisadjustedcorrectly,thereshouldbeaveryslightamountofplaypresentbetweenthegears.Onceyouhavesetthegearmeshcorrectly,tightenthemotormountingscrewssecurely.

Note: It is very important to set the gear mesh so that it is smooth with no binding. Be certain to check the mesh at multiple points on the main gear in order to find the position in which to secure the motor for the best gear mesh overall. Remember, if the gear mesh is set too loose or too tight, it may strip the gear and/or cause significant loss in power.

Ifusinga2.4GHzSpektrumAR6000receiver,werecommendmountingtheESContopofthemainframebaseplate,belowthemaingear,withtheheatsinkfacingupward.Note,thismayrequireyoutoadjustthepositionofthereceiversothatitcanrestpartiallyontheendoftheESCwherethemotorwireleadsexit.Becausethemainandtaildrivegearsaredesignedtoactascoolingfans,theycanmoveadditionalairacrosstheESC’sheatsinkforcooleroperationwheninthislocation.And,becausetheAR6000receiverisbeingused,thereisnoneedtoworryofpossibleinterferencetheESCmaycausewhenmountedthiscloseto72MHzreceivers.

9.2 Withtheswashplate(CCPM)servosintheirneutralposition,youwillneedtofindservoarms,thatwheninstalledoneachservo,areasclosetolevel(horizontal)aspossible.

Note, if you are using E-flite/Spektrum S75 servos, you will want to find servo arms that are angled approximately 5–10° upward when installed with the servos in their neutral position. This is to help prevent the servo arm from contacting the main drive gear with a negative collective and right aileron/down elevator control input.

9.5 WiththetailrotorpushrodlinkageZ-bendandservoarminstalled,itwillbenecessaryforyoutoadjustthepositionoftheservoandtailboomservomountstoprovideproperalignmentofthepushrodandtailpitchslider.

First,adjusttheservoandtailboomservomounts(byrotatingthemaroundtheboom)untilthepushrodisrunningasstraightaspossiblethroughthesupportandtothecontrolballonthetailpitchcontrollever.

Then,adjusttheservoandtailboomservomounts(byslidingthemforeoraftontheboom)untilthetailpitchslideriscenteredonthetailrotorshaft.Whentheslideriscentered,theendsofthebrassbushingshouldbeatequaldistancesfromthetailrotorcaseandtailrotorhub.

9.6 Afterconfirmingthatthetailrotorpushrodandtailpitchsliderareproperlyaligned,securethetailboomservomountstotheboombytighteningthescrewsthatclosetheclamp.Becareful,however,astighteningthescrewstoomuchcancausethemountstosnap.Themountsshouldonlybetightenoughtopreventthemfrommovingundermoderateamountsofhandpressure.

Note: The following steps are much easier to complete, in a more accurate manner, when using a Pitch Gauge (AGNH1000).

13.4 WiththetransmitterintheNormalFlightMode,setthethrottle/collectivesticktoexactlythecenterposition.Whenviewingthemodelfromtheside,withtheflybarparalleltothetailboomfromaboveandtheside,sightdowntheendofthemainrotorblades.Theyshouldbepositionedatexactly0°ofpitch,inrelationtotheflybar.

Ifyoufindthatbothrotorbladesarenotpositionedatexactly0°ofpitch,arecertainthatyouhaveassembledandadjustedalllinkagestotherecommendedlengthsandhavetheservosintheirneutralposition,wesuggestadjustingthelengthsoftheservo-to-swashplate(D,E,F)linkages.Youwillneedtoshortenthelengthofallthreeservo-to-swashplatelinkagesbyanequalamountiftherotorbladesaresettopositivepitch,andvice-versaiftherotorbladesaresettonegativepitch.Makesmalladjustmentstothelengthofallthreelinkagesinequalamountsuntiltherotorbladesarepositionedatexactly0°ofpitch.

Note: If you are using E-flite/Spektrum S75 servos, you will need to shorten the lengths of the servo-to-swashplate linkages in order to achieve exactly 0° of pitch for the main rotor blades. Again, you must shorten the length of all three linkages by an equal amount, and the amount of adjustment required will vary slightly depending on the actual neutral position of the servo arms (which can be between approximately 5° and 10° upward).

13.5 Afterconfirmingthatthemainrotorbladesaresetto0°ofpitchwiththethrottle/collectivestickinexactlythecenterposition(inNormalMode),movethethrottle/collectivesticktofull.Now,checkthepositionofthemainrotorbladesinrelationtotheflybarwhenviewingthemodelfromtheside.Theyshouldbesettoapproximately+9°to+11°.Iftheyarenot,adjusttheNormalModeHighpitchcurvevalue(PHN)inordertoadjusttherotorbladepositionatfullthrottle/collectivewhenintheNormalModeonly(preferred).Or,adjustthePitchCCPMtravelvalue(CP6)inordertoadjusttherotorbladepositionatlowandfullthrottle/collectivepositionsinallflightmodes(onlyrequiredifyouneedtoadjusttheNormalModeHigh/PHNvaluebeyondapproximately90%or100%travelineitherdirectiontoobtainthecorrectamountofpitch).

Typically,wefindthatapproximately+10°ofpitchisaverygoodstartingpointformostpilots.

13.6 StillintheNormalMode,movethethrottle/collectivesticktoitslowestpositionandcheckthepositionofthemainrotorblades.Theyshouldbesettoapproximately-2°to0°.Iftheyarenot,adjusttheNormalModeLowpitchcurvevalue(PLN)accordingly.Increasethevaluetoreducetheamountofnegativepitch,ordecreasethevaluetoincreasetheamountofnegativepitch.DonotadjustthePitchCCPMtravelvalue(CP6)inthiscase.

13.7 AfterconfirmingthatthemainrotorbladepitchvaluesarecorrectintheNormalFlightMode,youwillalsoneedtoconfirmthattheyarecorrectintheIdleUp/Stunt(3D)FlightMode.However,becauseyouhavealreadycheckedandproperlyadjustedthemainrotorbladepitchatmidandhighthrottle/collectivestickpositionsintheNormalMode,andbecausethesamepitchcurvevaluesareusedintheIdleUp/Stuntflightmode,noadditionaladjustmentshouldbenecessary.

If,however,thenoseortailareataslightdownwardangle,adjustthepositionofthebatterypackonthemountingplateforwardorrearwardasrequired(withthecanopyremoved)andrepeatthecenterofgravitycheck(withthecanopyinstalled).ContinuethebatterypositionadjustmentsandCGchecksuntilthemodelholdsalevelpositionwhenbalancedontheflybar.

Standard Belt Tension Guide:Visualize a straight line through the center of the forward tail drive pulley. You should be able to apply light tension to the belt with your finger until it reaches a point 3/4 of the way to the opposite side of the belt, or 1/4 of the way past the virtual center of the forward tail drive pulley.

16.2 Usingyourfinger,applylighttensiontoonesideofthebelt,compressingittowardtheotherside.Properbelttensionisachievedifthebeltreaches¾ofthewaytotheoppositesideofthebelt.

Ifyoufindthatthesideofthebeltyou’relightlycompressingcantouchtheoppositesideofthebelt,thetensionitsettooloose.Ifyoufindthatthesideofthebeltyou’relightlycompressingdoesnotreach3/4ofthewaytotheoppositesideofthebelt,thetensionissettootight.

16.3 Belttensioncanbeadjustedbyfirstlooseningtheeightscrewsthatattachthetailboomholdertothemainframe,thenslidingtheboomin(toloosenbelttension)orout(totightenbelttension)accordingly.Afteradjustingthepositionofthetailboomtoprovidethepropertaildrivebelttension,besuretoretightenalleightscrews(carefullytopreventstripping)toholdtheboomsecurelyinplace.

17.1 First,removethemainrotorblades,mountingboltsandnutsfromthemainrotorbladegrips.Thiswillallowyoutotestthemotor’soperationmoresafely.

17.2 ConnectthethreemotorwireleadstothemotorpoweroutputleadsoftheESC.Youcanconnectthewireleadsinanyorder.

17.3 Moveyourmodel(withbatterypackinstalledbutnotconnected)andtransmittertoanopenarea.Thiswillallowyoutopowerupthemodeltoconfirmthatthemotorisbothoperatingcorrectly,androtatinginthecorrectdirection.

17.4 Turnyourtransmitteronfirst,withthethrottle/collectivestickinitslowestposition.Then,plugthebatterypackintotheESC.BesuretoexerciseextremecautionastheESCmaynowbearmed,whichcouldallowthemotortospintheflybar/flybarpaddlesandtailrotorblades.

17.5 Carefullymoveclearofthemodel,flybarpaddlesandtailrotorblades.Also,besurethatnoloosearticlesorotherobstructionscancomeintocontactwiththeflybarpaddlesandtailrotorblades.

Onceclearofthemodelandanymovingparts,andcertaintheESChasbeenarmedproperly(seeESCmanualformoreinfoifrequired),slowlyadvancethethrottle/collectivestickuntilthemotorbeginstospin.

17.6 Notethedirectionthattheflybarpaddlesspinwiththemotorrunning.Theyshouldspinclockwisewhenviewingthehelicopter(atasafedistance)fromabove.Iftheflybarpaddlesarespinningclockwise,themotorisoperatinginthecorrectdirection.

If,however,theflybarpaddlesarespinningcounterclockwise,themotorisoperatinginthewrongdirection.Powerthemodeldown(stopthemotorandunplugthebatterypack)andreversethepositionsofanytwomotorwireleadconnectionstotheESC.Then,repeatthestepstocheckthedirectiontheflybarpaddlesspinwiththemotorrunning.Theyshouldnowbespinningclockwise,indicatingthatthemotorisoperatinginthecorrectdirection.

Youcanchecktrackingofthemainrotorbladesbeforeorduringthefirstflightofyourmodel.Whendoingso,besuretomaintainasafedistancefromthehelicopter(approximately15–20feet).Wealsosuggesthavinganassistantonhandtohelpsighttheblades,especiallyifyouwillbeflyingthemodel.

20.1 Bringthemainrotorbladesuptospeed.Ifbothbladesarerunninginthesameplane,noadjustmentswillberequired.If,however,thebladesarenottrackinginthesameplane,adjustmentwillbenecessary.

20.2 Ifyoufindthatthemainrotorbladesareoutoftrack,notewhichbladeisrunninglowandwhichbladeisrunninghigh(byusingcoloredtrackingtapeononeorbothblades).Then,powerthemodeldownandadjustthelinkagestoraisethelowblade,orlowerthehighblade(dependingonyourdesiredpitchcurves).

Usethemainbladegriptomixingarmlinkage(A)foradjustinglargervariationsintracking,orthemixingarmtoinnerswashplatelinkage(C)foradjustingsmallervariationsintracking.

20.3 Continuetocheckthebladetrackingandadjustthelinkagesasrequireduntilbothbladesarerunninginthesameplane.Typically,notmuchadjustmentshouldberequired.However,ifsignificantadjustmentsofthelinkagesarerequiredtoobtainproperbladetracking,double-checkthelengthsofthepitchcontrollinkages(theyshouldbeclosetothesamelength)andiftherotorbladeshaveanywarpsortwists.

RoutinemaintenanceisnecessarytokeepyourT-REX450SAinoptimalandsafeflyingcondition.

Ball Links

Beforeeachflyingsession,checktoseethattheballlinksaresecure,butnottight(binding),onthecontrolballs.Theplasticballlinkscanwearovertime,andiftheybecometoolooseonthecontrolballs,theycanseparatefromtheballinflightandcauseacrash.Theballlinksontheinnerswashplateareespeciallysubjecttohighwear,andit’simportanttochecktheseoften.

Subjectedtohard3Dflying,theselinkscanbecomelooseinabout40to50flights.Besuretoreplaceanywornballlinksbeforetheyfail.

O-Ring Head Dampeners

TheO-ringdampenersintheheadblockcanperiodicallywearandlosetheirelasticity.WornO-ringscancausemainrotorbladetrackingproblems.Ifyoustarthavingtroublewiththebladesgoinginandoutoftrackduringflight,itislikelytimetoreplacetheO-ringdampeners.WhenreplacingtheO-ringdampenersit’simportanttolubricatethemwithgreaseorVaselinetopreventfriction.

Aggressive3DflightcanwearouttheO-ringdampenersintheheadinapproximately50to80flights.

Tail Rotor Drive Belt

It’stypicalforthetaildrivebelttostretchslightlyoverthefirst20flights.Whennew,frequentlycheckandadjustthebelttensionasrequired.Afterapproximately30to40flights,thebeltelasticitywillstabilize,requiringlittletonoadditionaltensionadjustment.

Bearings

Theonewaybearinginthemaindrivegearshouldbecleanedusingisopropylalcoholorelectricmotorspray,thenlubedwithlightweightoil,approximatelyevery100flights.Allotherbearingstypicallyexhibitverylonglifeandnormallyonlyneedtobereplacediftheyeverbecomenotchy(stickyinplaceswhenturning)ordraggy.

Afteracrash,nomatterhowmajororminor,it’svitaltocarefullycheckforandreplaceanydamagedparts.Payspecialattentiontothemainandtailrotorblades,bladegrips,thefeathering/spindleshaft,mainshaftandtailrotorshaft.Also,besuretocheckthetailrotordrivebelt,alldriveandservogears,fordamagedormissingteeth.

Ifyouhaveeventheslightestdoubtabouttheintegrityofapart,itmustbereplaced.

GENERAL

1)Iwillnotflymymodelaircraftinsanctionedevents,airshowsormodelflyingdemonstrationsuntilithasbeenproventobeairworthybyhavingbeenpreviously,successfullyflighttested.

RADIO CONTROL

2)IwillnotflymymodelaircraftinthepresenceofspectatorsuntilIbecomeaqualifiedflier,unlessassistedbyanexperiencedhelper.

3)Atallflyingsitesastraightorcurvedline(s)mustbeestablishedinfrontofwhichallflyingtakesplacewiththeothersideforspectators.Onlypersonnelinvolvedwithflyingtheaircraftareallowedatorinfrontoftheflightline.Intentionalflyingbehindtheflightlineisprohibited.

4)IwilloperatemymodelusingonlyradiocontrolfrequenciescurrentlyallowedbytheFederalCommunicationsCommission.(OnlyproperlylicensedAmateursareauthorizedtooperateequipmentonAmateurBandfrequencies.)
