WELCOME - ThePreserveandMollerTrailsarelocatedwithinthe38-acreGoldCreekOpenSpace,anaturalareasouthofThePreservehousingdevelopmentonthewestsideofFoothillRoad.ThispublicopenspaceisadjacenttoadditionalprivateopenspaceownedandoperatedbybothThePreserveandMollerRanchsubdivisions.ThePreserveStagingAreaincludesapavedparkinglot,publicrestroomandtrailheads.Publictrailscrisscrossingtheopenspaceandtherestroomareopentothepublicyearround.GoldCreekOpenSpaceincludesgrassyhillsides,oakwoodlandswithrelatedunderstoryplants,seasonalcreeksandsprings,woodenbridgesandriparianvegetation.
History–OnMarch27,1991,thePlanningCommissionapprovedaPUD(plannedunitdevelopment)forPresleyHomes(nowcalledThePreserve)tosubdividea271-acrelotinto100singlefamilyhomeswiththeconditionthat189acreswouldremainasnaturalopenspace,withhikingtrailsavailabletothepublic.In1993atraileasementwasdedicatedtotheCityofPleasanton.ThisdedicationallowsPleasantonresidentstohikeonprivatelandsconnectingtheMollerRanchtrailswiththePreserveTrailsinGoldCreekOpenSpace.ApicnicareaandadditionalparkingarelocatedinLaurelCreekParkat5875LaurelCreekDrive.WhileThePreserveisaresidentialdevelopment,allPleasantonresidentshaveaccesstothenetworkoftrails,openspace,andviewsthatwereprotectedasaconditionofdevelopment.
Vegetation and Habitat–In1991awildlifecorridorwithpermanentaccesstoGoldandLaurelCreekwasestablishedbytheCity.Whilemanynon-nativegrassespersist,onemaystillfindnativeplantsincludingsoaproot,stingingnettleandstickymonkeyflower.Red-tailedhawksandwhite-tailedkitessoarabovesycamore,valleyoak,laurelandbuckeyetreesandmaidenhairfernsgrowinthecanyon.Californianewtsandthewesternfencelizardsunthemselvesonwarmrocksandearth.Mountainlions,whileseldomseen,alsohuntinthearea.
Wild Turkeys–Wildturkeysmaybeseenalongthetrails,andinoaksavannahsofthefoothillswheretheysurviveoninsects,spiders,snails,slugs,salamanders,smalllizards,smallfrogs,millipedes,grasshoppers,verysmallsnakes,worms,grasses,vines,flowers,acorns,buds,seeds,fruits,cloversandothervegetation.Whilethewildturkeysweseetodayareconsiderednon-nativespecies,theyhavebeenlinkedtofossilizedturkeysfrom10,000yearsagoandmightverywellbeconsideredareintroducedspecies!
White-tailed Kite–ThisbirdwasrenderedalmostextinctinCaliforniainthe1930sand1940sbuthassincereturnedtoahealthypopulation.Theycanbeidentifiedbyredeyesandwhitebodywithblackmarkingsontheshouldersandwingtips.Thewhite-tailedkitepatrolslowlandscrubandgrasslandsinsearchofrodents.
Bobcat–Thebobcatearnsitscommonnamefromthe“bobbed”orstubbedappearanceofitstailandisabouttwicethesizeofahousecatwithblacktipped
ears.Thiselusivepredatorhuntsrabbits,hares,deer,insectsandrodentsandisclassifiedaspartofthegenusLynx.
Rattlesnake–TheGoldCreekOpenSpaceishometomanyrattlesnakes.Rattlesnakeseatmice,rats,smallbirdsandothersmallanimals.Theyinfecttheirpreywithvenomthroughabite.Theywillusetherattlesattheendoftheirtailstowardoffpredators.Rattlesnakesrarelybiteunlessprovoked.
ACCESS—ThePreservetrailsmaybeaccessedbypark-inginthestagingarealocatedat5850LaurelCreekDrive.Fromthatpoint,thetrailcanbehikedinaclock-wiseorcounter-clockwisedirectionwithadjacentMollerRanchtrailsconnectingatthesouthsideofthetrails.
