Proclaim the Greatness of the Lord… Dear Friends:

It may not be the most important theme of our readings to-day, but I found myself reflecting on the Gospel of Mark where we are told that Jesus “went off to a deserted place where he prayed.” You’ll recall that last weekend at our Masses I talked about how we can be distracted easily when it comes to our prayer, among other things. I think Jesus pro-vides us today one good example of how we can keep from being distracted in our prayer. That is, to go off to some quiet place where all of our distractions can be set aside… even if briefly. Of course, this is not the only place in Sacred Scripture that we are encouraged to pray in solitude. For example, Matthew 6:5-6 quotes Jesus, “When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in se-cret will reward you.” Like Jesus, maybe we can find some extra time this week to spend a few moments in quiet prayer.

When I looked at the calendar, I couldn’t believe that Ash Wednesday is a week from Wednesday! Just when we get used to the Christmas decorations being down, Ash Wednesday comes upon us! But since we are about 10 days away, we have ample time to think about what our Lenten resolutions might be. We shouldn’t wait until Ash Wednesday to make up our minds. Instead, we should have it planned beforehand. What will our Lenten resolution be? How will I carry it out? These are good questions for us to start thinking about.

I’ve been thinking and praying hard about what I might do for a Lenten Lecture Series. For many years, I have taken the Wednesday evenings during Lent to offer a series on various aspects of our faith. I began to think… instead of my picking the topic, what if our parishioners picked the topic? In other words, what if we made this a pure “apologetics” series? I ran the idea by a few people and they encouraged it. So, I’m going to give it a try. I ask parishioners to submit me questions about various aspects of our faith. We could begin our questions with, “I have always wondered why the Church teaches…” or “Could you give a presentation on…” I want to see how this goes. Beginning now, until Ash Wednesday, parishioners are welcome to submit ques-tions to me through email ([email protected]) or by dropping off questions to the office… or even in the collection basket. I will do my best to pick as many as possible, and form my weekly presentation on those questions. Basically, questions should be submitted by Wednesday evening for the following Wednesday. I’ll explain this more at our Masses. This year, I will hold these presentations on 2/21, 2/28, 3/7, 3/14, and 3/21. There will not be a presentation on Ash Wednesday or Wednesday of Holy Week. Therefore, start coming up with questions… and we will see how it goes.

One “housekeeping” note: Sometimes at our weekend Masses, our parking lot be-comes full. That’s a happy problem! But some are parking in the fire lanes which could be a big problem if we ever need an emergency vehicle to get to the church or school. Remember, parking is also available in the Tiger Room lot across the street. Perhaps a few more folks could use that parking when it’s possible. Thanks. Have a good week, and Praised be Jesus Christ!

Fr. John
