OUR PROGRAMS COMMUNITY The Community Garden at Alder Creek Farm continues to reflect the Trust’s commitment to the citizens of North Tillamook County. In 2016-17, 38 local gardeners and another 74 volun- teers put in an estimated 4,000 hours of work to plant, cultivate, and harvest more than 1,800 pounds of produce for the community, benefiting the North Coast Food Pantry. CONSERVATION During 2016-17, we launched Protect the Edge, a $1.3 million campaign to add seven new prop- erties to the portfolio of lands we hold for conservation and stewardship. By the end of our 2016-17 fiscal year, we had raised $1.13 million through a combination of gifts and grants to purchase four of the seven properties. The campaign continues, and with our new acquisitions, we have added 14 acres to our prior total holdings of 135.5 acres of conserved lands. EDUCATION In 2016-17, a total of 270 students spent class time at the Farm. Some were there for lessons in environment and conservation. Others came for their annual day of community service, assist- ing the work of the Garden by spreading bark chips, digging weeds and scrubbing pots. Others came with the Forest-to-Sea Science Camp program. Finally, during 2016-17, the Trust offered 14 educational hikes and nature experiences to the public through the Explore Nature Tillamook County program, a consortium project of six local organizations. Our mission is to preserve land and nurture conservation values in partnership with an engaged community in the Nehalem region of the Oregon Coast. 2016-2017 FINANCIAL REPORT 2016-17 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Allan Olson, President Roxann Balmer, Secretary Jim Pendergrass, Treasurer Nancy Chase Doug Firstbrook David Sip Casey Storey Carl Vandervoort Sarah Avery Johnson, Interim Executive Director Over the past few years, I’ve been asked about the meaning of the words “...Beading the necklace of people and placein describing Lower Nehalem Community Trust. Over the past few years, I’ve been asked about the meaning of the words “...Beading the necklace of people and place”

in describing Lower Nehalem Community Trust. Actually, it’s nothing mystical, nor is it part of some local legend. Crafted

early in the Trust’s existence, it remains a poetic description of the Lower Nehalem Community Trust’s commitment to bring the people here into partnership with the glorious land on which we are all privileged to live.

The annual work of the Trust reflects that commitment. Our Alder Creek Farm programs continue to be full of community involvement. Our protected land is increasing in scope, and with our purchase of the Anderson property adjoining the Farm, we now find ourselves dreaming about alternative uses for the house located on the property. To clarify that dream, we will be embarking soon on the development of a master plan for Alder Creek Farm.

Thanks to you, 2016-17 was a very good year for the Trust. Your financial support and enthu-siastic participation in our work has empow-ered us to find new ways to bring together the community and the land on which we live. Our momentum is exciting! Stay with us as the work continues.
