S&R Ready Mix and Norton Fuel Service For Race Information Call Ed at 785-871-7074 Brought to You by Proud Sponsors: Teams to showcase talents By CYNTHIA HAYNES [email protected] Oberlin sports fans can spend most of the late afternoon and evening Thursday watching their favorite high school and junior high sports teams showcase their talents – and not even have to go home for supper. The Annual Sports Drink Scrim- mages will start at 4 p.m. Thursday with the junior high volleyball team playing an intrasquad game in the junior-high gym at Decatur Com- munity High. The junior high girls are coached by Gina Witt and Kerrie Wahlmeier. As soon as the girls are done, the junior high boys will take to the football field for their scrimmage, which should start at 4:45 p.m. They are coached by Joe Dreher and Mark Bricker. While heading from the gym to the football field, parents, grandparents and friends can stop off at the ath- letic department’s tailgate party and enjoy hot dogs and hot off the grill hamburgers. Donation will go toward helping the student athletes, the coaches say. At 5:30 p.m., the high school girls will get in the act as the Decatur Community High volleyball team, which took fourth at the Class 2A state tournament last year, hits the court in the high school gym to show off their stuff. The girls are coached by Sherri Ruf and Melissa Dreher. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., a Girl Scout sign up and tailgate party will be held at the stadium. Girls can sign up for Scouting at other times, but this will give students and parents an easy and efficient way to do it, Scout leaders say. At 7 p.m., the annual high school scrimmage cross country run will start in front of the grandstand. The boys and girls will run around the track and into town before returning to the stadium and taking a final lap around the track. As soon as the runners have left the stadium, the annual Red Devil Sports Drink Scrimmage will begin as the white and red teams compete on the field. The football team is coached by J.D. Johnson with help from assis- tant coaches Shane Bird and Caleb Howland. The cost of admission to all of the scrimmages will be a bottle, or several if you like, of your favorite sports drink, such as Gatorade or Powerade. In the past, fans were asked to bring a bar of soap, but as times changed, the sports drinks became more useful as each athlete usu- ally brings his or her own favorite brand of soap to the locker room these days. Football team to play Thursday Decatur Community High foot- ball fans will get their first glimpse of the 2010 team at 7 p.m. Thursday as the squad takes to the field for the annual Sports Drink Scrimmage and Run. The Oberlin Red Devils football players will give the cross country team a chance to circle the track and head into town before the squad splits into red and white teams. The boys will take to the field to show what they have been practicing since the beginning of school a little over a week ago. Admittance to the scrimmage is a bottle or can of sports drink, like Gatorade or Powerade. In the past, the school asked for soap and toiletry products, but most students bring their own now and the sports drinks are more useful. Coach J.D. Johnson’s 28-man squad will have seven seniors, No- lan Peters, Keithen Fortin, Josh Rit- ter, Dakota Soderlund, Jon Samson, Dalton Dolan and Jacob Larue; four juniors, Brent Juenemann, Conner McHugh, Garrett Berry and Shay McChesney; seven sophomores, Zach May, Ryan May, Brady Fortin, Cody Wurm, Matt Glading, Chan- ning Fortin and Tyler Bruggeman; and 10 freshmen, Dayton Dreher, Kolton Paul, Kyle Breth, Chris Anderson, Kennedy Fortin, Kon- ner Fortin, Barron Green, Justin Gee, Adam Zillinger and Grant Gilliam. The Red Devils have nine return- ing lettermen — all the seniors and sophomores Z. May and C. Fortin. Coach Johnson will be assisted by Shane Bird and Caleb Howland. The first game will be on the road at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, in Cambridge, Neb., against the Cow- boys. Oberlin’s first home game will be against Syracuse at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10. Scrimmage set Thursday After a successful 2009 season, the Decatur Community High volleyball girls will be on the court again for their annual Sports Drink Scrimmage at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The girls finished fourth in the state last year in Class 2A and Coach Sherri Ruf has several returning lettermen and a lot of younger players. Playing this year will be seniors Rachelle Scott, Carissa Wentz, Laysha Medina, Jori Diederich and Jordan Dreher; juniors Bri- anna Klima, Samantha Ander- son and Kiah Blau; sophomores Cassidy Shields, Miki Dorshorst, Darbi Rouse, Taylor Macfee and Keatra Fisher; and freshmen Brittany Urban, Katlyn Klima, Hannah May, Jamie Soderlund, Alexis Hissong, Ashley Witt and Jalyn Shaw. Melissa Dreher is the assistant coach and Elizabeth Nedland will serve as student manager for the team. For the scrimmage, everyone is asked to bring a sports drink such as Gatorade or Powerade for the team. After the volleyball scrimmage, there will be tailgate parties by both the Oberlin athletic depart- ment and the Girl Scouts. On Friday, the girls will be in Wheatland at 3 p.m. to play Wheatland and Hoxie. Then on Tuesday, the Lady Red Devils head for Oakley to take on the Lady Plainsmen plus Leoti and Phillipsburg, with play starting at 3:30 p.m. Fans won’t see the varsity on the floor unless they go on the road with the team until Saturday, Oct. 2, when the girls play host for the Oberlin Invitational tournament. However, on Saturday, Sept. 25, the younger girls will be play- ing in the Oberlin “C” Team Tour- nament, which starts at 9 a.m. AT PRACTICE last week, Alexis Hissong worked on her serve for the upcoming volleyball season at Decatur Community High School. ― Herald staff photo by Cynthia Haynes Cross country to start season The Decatur Community High cross country team will show off its stuff on Thursday as the seven girls and six boys take to the track at the stadium and then around town in the Annual Sports Drink Scrimmage and Run. Coach Dick Ahlberg, who will be guiding the Oberlin cross country team for the 34th year, will have seven returning letter winners on his squad and for the first time in memory, more girls and boys on the team. Seniors Jacob Helm, Tiffany Anderson and Bret Ashley have all lettered twice as have juniors Dalton Jones and Tyler Shields. Junior Nolan Henningson and sophomore Kaylee May lettered last year. Others on the 2010 team are ju- nior Amanda Marshall, sophomore Matthew Helm and freshmen Caleb Koerperich, Emma Borton, Kayla Jones and Lara Zodrow. The team will start its scrimmage run at 7 p.m. Thursday in front of the grandstand at the high school foot- ball stadium. Admission to watch the runners and the football team is a bottle or can of sports drink such as Gatorade or Powerade. The other junior high teams and the high school volleyball team will have their scrimmages earlier in the day and there food available from the athletic department and the girl scouts. The runners will have their first real meet at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, at the Norton Invitational.

Teams to showcase talentsBy CYNTHIA [email protected]

Oberlin sports fans can spend most of the late afternoon and evening Thursday watching their favorite high school and junior high sports teams showcase their talents – and not even have to go home for supper.

The Annual Sports Drink Scrim-mages will start at 4 p.m. Thursday with the junior high volleyball team playing an intrasquad game in the junior-high gym at Decatur Com-munity High. The junior high girls are coached by Gina Witt and Kerrie Wahlmeier.

As soon as the girls are done, the junior high boys will take to the football field for their scrimmage, which should start at 4:45 p.m. They are coached by Joe Dreher and Mark Bricker.

While heading from the gym to the football field, parents, grandparents

and friends can stop off at the ath-letic department’s tailgate party and enjoy hot dogs and hot off the grill hamburgers.

The

boys and girls will run around the track and into town before returning to the stadium and taking a final lap around the track.

As soon as the runners have left the stadium, the annual Red Devil Sports Drink Scrimmage will begin as the white and red teams compete on the field.

The football team is coached by J.D. Johnson with help from assis-tant coaches Shane Bird and Caleb Howland.

The cost of admission to all of the scrimmages will be a bottle, or several if you like, of your favorite sports drink, such as Gatorade or Powerade.

In the past, fans were asked to bring a bar of soap, but as times changed, the sports drinks became more useful as each athlete usu-ally brings his or her own favorite brand of soap to the locker room these days.

Football team to play ThursdayDecatur Community High foot-

ball fans will get their first glimpse of the 2010 team at 7 p.m.

Admittance to the scrimmage is a bottle or can of sports drink,

like Gatorade or Powerade. In the past, the school asked for soap and toiletry products, but most students bring their own now and the sports drinks are more useful.

Coach J.D. Johnson’s 28-man squad will have seven seniors, No-lan Peters, Keithen Fortin, Josh Rit-ter, Dakota Soderlund, Jon Samson, Dalton Dolan and Jacob Larue; four juniors, Brent Juenemann, Conner McHugh, Garrett Berry and Shay McChesney; seven sophomores, Zach May, Ryan May, Brady Fortin, Cody Wurm, Matt Glading, Chan-ning Fortin and Tyler Bruggeman; and 10 freshmen, Dayton Dreher,

Kolton Paul, Kyle Breth, Chris Anderson, Kennedy Fortin, Kon-ner Fortin, Barron Green, Justin Gee, Adam Zillinger and Grant Gilliam.

The Red Devils have nine return-ing lettermen — all the seniors and sophomores Z. May and C. Fortin. Coach Johnson will be assisted by Shane Bird and Caleb Howland.

The first game will be on the road at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, in Cambridge, Neb., against the Cow-boys.

Oberlin’s first home game will be against Syracuse at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10.

Scrimmage set ThursdayAfter a successful 2009 season,

the Decatur Community High volleyball girls will be on the court again for their annual Sports Drink Scrimmage at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The girls finished fourth in the state last year in Class 2A and Coach Sherri Ruf has several returning lettermen and a lot of younger players.

Playing this year will be seniors Rachelle Scott, Carissa Wentz, Laysha Medina, Jori Diederich and Jordan Dreher; juniors Bri-anna Klima, Samantha Ander-son and Kiah Blau; sophomores Cassidy Shields, Miki Dorshorst, Darbi Rouse, Taylor Macfee and Keatra Fisher; and freshmen Brittany Urban, Katlyn Klima, Hannah May, Jamie Soderlund, Alexis Hissong, Ashley Witt and Jalyn Shaw.

Melissa Dreher is the assistant coach and Elizabeth Nedland will serve as student manager for the team.

For the scrimmage, everyone is asked to bring a sports drink such as Gatorade or Powerade for the team.

After the volleyball scrimmage, there will be tailgate parties by both the Oberlin athletic depart-ment and the Girl Scouts.

25, the younger girls will be play-ing in the Oberlin “C” Team Tour-nament, which starts at 9 a.m.

Cross country to start seasonThe Decatur Community High

cross country team will show off its stuff on Thursday as the seven girls and six boys take to the track at the stadium and then around town in the Annual Sports Drink Scrimmage and Run.

Others on the 2010 team are ju-nior Amanda Marshall, sophomore Matthew Helm and freshmen Caleb Koerperich, Emma Borton, Kayla Jones and Lara Zodrow.

The team will start its scrimmage run at 7 p.m. Thursday in front of the

grandstand at the high school foot-ball stadium.
