Principal Matters Welcome back to school

I wish to welcome all school community members to the new school year. With the absence of building works for the first

time in many years, all students and staff have had a very smooth beginning to the new school year. The four prep classes

have settled extremely well with the support of their senior school buddies. As I visited all classes on the first day of 2015, it

was pleasing to observe all students engaged in their learning in very orderly classrooms.

The school buildings and grounds have been prepared over the holidays and were beautifully presented in preparation for the

2015 school year. We are very proud of the facilities available at Toorak Primary School and regularly receive positive com-

ments from the wider Toorak community.

Parent Information Night

Parent Information sessions will be held over the next few weeks. Please ensure you are familiar with the newsletters from

each level of the school, as details of each session will be contained within. An opportunity will also be provided for parents

wishing to pass important information to the classroom teachers about individual students. Please ensure teachers are aware

of circumstances that may affect your child’s social, emotional or academic progress at school.

Assembly

Due to the extreme heat often experienced in term one and term four, assembly will continue to be held on Friday mornings.

Currently prep students attend school for four days only. At the beginning of March, they will join the rest of the school stu-

dents at assembly.

Hat Lotto, Hat Lotto, Hat Lotto -Sun smart School

In line with our Sun Smart policy, hats are compulsory for all outdoor activities in terms 1 and 4. Please ensure that your child has a named school hat each day. As part of our Sun Smart Program, we will once again conduct HAT LOTTO. All students’ names will be placed in the draw. Each day several students will be drawn from the pool of names. The winners will receive an ice-pole as a reward for wearing a hat to school. Hat Lotto will begin on Monday 9th February. Walking to school

I urge all families to walk or ride to school whenever possible in order to reduce the traffic congestion around the school. If

possible try to support each other to ensure cars are left at home or at least parked well away from the school. Teachers will

also encourage the students to walk to school through curriculum initiatives. It is anticipated that Bike Education will once

again be offered to students in the junior school. A map outlining suitable parking spaces is available on the school website.

Welcome to new Staff Members

I would like to welcome three new staff members to Toorak Primary School for 2014. Tamika Pettigrove Foundation B Maddison Brough Level 01B Kathryn Sinker Music / Performing Arts

Leaders of Learning Literacy and Data Amy Heseltine Deputy Ross Brittan Numeracy and Data Steve Carota Deputy Declan Barron Engagement, Wellbeing and Sustainability Vittoria Dell’Atte Deputy Charlotte Gibson Digital Literacy Michael Holden Deputy Georgina Bishop For the whole of term one Mrs Mary Lou Poulson will be on long service leave. Mrs Lisa Almond will teach in the library during term one before taking maternity leave at the end of the term. We welcome Lisa’s return albeit a short one.

Principal Matters Mr Geoff Wright will continue to support the instrumental music program through Musicorp. Ms Kathryn Sinker is the musical director this year and will oversee the musical production of, “The Little Mermaid”. Dates have been confirmed with Wesley College for Wednesday September 16th and Thursday 17th. We once again look forward to staging the biannual whole school musical which has proven to be a wonderful community building event for our school community. Toorak Primary School is fortunate to have five specialist staff members employed to teach Visual Arts, Music, Physical Educa-tion, French and Library. School Council Members for 2015

Since the number of nominations equalled the number of vacancies in the 2015 ballot, I hereby declare the following nomi-nees elected to the Toorak Primary School Council: Rebekah Curtis, Don Stewart, Belinda Albietz, Adrian Neild in the parent member category and Charlotte Gibson and Georgina Bishop in the Department of Education and Training member category.

Congratulations to the 2015 School Councillors.

Parent Class Representatives

Each class is expected to nominate 2 class representatives to liaise between the classroom teacher and the parents. The task

is not demanding but necessary for an involved community at all levels of the school. This year class representatives will,

amongst other things, organise occasional social gatherings for their level as well as support the organisation and operation of

the school canteen. Please complete the form on the following page and forward to your child’s classroom teacher to assist in

this role.

On Wednesday the grade 3 to 6’s went to the Prahran Pool for the House Swimming Carnival. It was an amazing day even though the weather wasn’t fantastic. All students had a great day. There was a lot of cheering from all houses with their fan-tastic chants.

Thank you to all parents who came and helped, this day would not be possible without you. Also thank you teachers for mak-ing the day safe, and last but not least thank to Mr. Holden for organizing the day.

All students who did not do the races did a great job in novelty. The games were ball scrabble and relay races.

At the end we had a teacher and student race with Mr Golden and Mr Holden. It was a photo finish but Mr Golden won the race. Then it was time to announce which house won the swimming carnival. Hinkler came 4th, Kingsford came 3rd and Monash came second and Nelson won. All the students had an amazing experience.

Class Representative Form

I ………………………………………………………………….wish to be a class representative in level …………….

Julie Manallack

Principal

Is your child interested in playing basketball? Would they like to be part of a fun and exciting team sport that can develop ball skills and teamwork? Toorak Primary School is looking for players that are interested in being part of a team to play in the Playball Competition at MSAC on either a Tuesday or Friday night. We currently have about 12 teams playing across all age groups on both nights. If your child is interested then please see Mr Holden or leave your name at the office and they will pass it on. If we get enough numbers we will be able to enter new teams or we will endeavour to add your child into the appropriate existing team. Students from Grade 1 - 6 are welcome.

We are also seeking parents to come and coach or manage a team. No coaching experience is necessary however it is pre-ferred. Each team will also need a manager who is able to make it to games and help with scoring. MSAC runs coaching courses throughout the year if you would like to attend or I am happy to give you a quick “how to coach” session if you want some pointers. If you are interested in helping out then please see Mr Holden or leave your name at the office and I will be in contact.

From March 2nd to March 13th the students from Grade 3-6 will be participating in swimming les-sons. This year we will be doing the lessons at King Swim in St Kilda. The students will be bussed over and back each day for the 2 weeks (except for Labor Day on March 9th). We will be seeking parental help to supervise the students. Please see your child’s classroom teacher if you are able to help. More detailed times will be sent out closer to the start of the program. Swimming is an im-portant part of life in Australia and we encourage as many students as possible to be involved in learning this important life skill.

The Prep - Grade 2 students will be attending their swimming lessons in Term 4.

News from the Office COMPASS

TPS has launched a new parent portal called COMPASS. Compass will enable you to access your child’s attendance data and enter absences, approve your child’s absences online, provide parent consent for excursions and pay for school fee’s, excur-sions and camps securely online. In the last week, 2014 TPS families should have received a letter detailing your username and password to log into COMPASS. (2015 families will receive their letter shortly). If not, please contact the office. To access COMPASS, go to https://toorakps.vic.jdlf.com.au/ or use the link on the TPS webpage located at www.toorakps.vic.edu.au. Click on the link and follow the prompts using your login details. It is important that you retain your login details and keep them secure for future use.

Music News - Welcome Miss Sinker We welcome Miss Sinker to the staff, as our specialist Teacher of Music. Miss Sinker is originally from England and moved to Melbourne in order to join her family who also emigrated here. Be-fore arriving in Australia she taught Music for six years at British international schools in both Vi-etnam and Dubai. Miss Sinker writes 'I am delighted to be joining TPS at such an exciting time. We have a busy year ahead in Music and I look forward to getting to know students in lessons but also as we commence our rehearsals for this year's production of The Little Mermaid.

Rehearsals for this year’s production of ‘The Little Mermaid’ are well underway and I am now calling out to parents/family who would be willing to lend a hand. Perhaps you have prop or set design experience, enjoy making costumes, are a bit of a make-up artist or would like to offer some general backstage help. If so, please get in touch and leave your name, phone number and email address at the Office. I look forward to hearing from you!

Music News - The Little Mermaid

We welcome our new 2015 Foundation students and extend this welcome to all new families who are joining our school

community. We have eighty-three students across our four Foundation classes this year from many different kindergartens.

Interestingly, for the first time in many years, we have no twins or triplets starting school.

The students are busy exploring their new environments, learning rules and routines and making new friends.

The Foundation students are also lucky to have caring Grade 5/6 buddies who played with them on the first day and are com-

ing to visit our classes regularly. We hope many wonderful friendships and alliances will form throughout the year.

We are currently practising assembly etiquette and look forward to attending our first whole school assembly in the first

week of March. In the meantime, the photos reflect how much fun school can be!
