OUR SPEAKERS Ted Alexander is the former historian of Antietam National Battlefield and retired this year after 35 years of service with NPS. Alexander is the co-founder and host of our seminars. He is the author, editor, or contributor to 10 books on the Civil War and other aspects of American history, and more than 200 book reviews and articles for publications

such as Civil War Times and The Washington Times.

David Dixon enjoys dumpster-diving in archives and throughout cyberspace. Dixon earned his M.A. in history from the University of Massachusetts in 2003. He has published numerous articles in scholarly journals and magazines. Most focus on black history and Union sympathizers in the Civil War South. His short biography of U.S. and Confederate congressman Augustus R. Wright appeared in The Georgia Historical Quarterly in 2010. David Dixon hosts www.davidtdixon.com, a website celebrating obscure characters and their amazing stories.

Dennis Frye is the Chief Historian at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. He has appeared numerous times as a commentator on PBS, The History Channel, The Discovery Channel, and A&E. Frye is the author of more than 77 articles and seven books. His latest is

September Suspense: Lincoln’s Union in Peril.

Rich Goedkoop is a retired professor of Communication at La Salle University. Goedkoop has been a Licensed Battlefield Guide at Gettysburg National Military Park since 2000 and has given over 4,000 tours since that time and several field and classroom programs for the Gettysburg Foundation. He was also an executive producer of a series of six half-hour television programs filmed in the Delaware Valley on

the theme of Pennsylvania in the Civil War.

Dr. Wesley Hanson has a long background as both a concert singer and musician. He was educated at Northwestern University and the Eastman School of Music. He lectures and performs frequently for the National Park Service, Civil War Round Tables, and other groups. He has released a CD of rare and unusual Civil War music.

Ross Hetrick is a former business reporter and businessman. In 1999 he founded the Thaddeus Stevens Society. Hetrick's stated goal was to promote the memory of what he calls "the greatest unknown person in American history." The Thaddeus Stevens Society has helped preserve Stevens' house in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and maintains and protects his final resting place there. Ross Hetrick spoke to one of our early Lincoln seminars more than 15 years ago. We would like to welcome him back to Chambersburg Seminars.

Joe Mieczkowski is a Civil War living historian and educator. Having received his Bachelor’s Degree from Salem College and his Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Pennsylvania State University, he spent 37 years working with the Social Security Administration. Mieczkowski is a past president of the Gettysburg CWRT, licensed battlefield guide for the Gettysburg National Military Park, and the

author of the book Lincoln and his Cabinet.

Scott Mingus is the author of seventeen books on the Civil War. His latest work is Soldiers, Spies and Steam: A History of the Northern Central Railway in the Civil War. His biography of Confederate general 'Extra Billy' Smith won the James I. Robertson Literary Prize. In 2013 he received the Heritage Profile Award from the York County Heritage Trust for his contributions to local Civil War history.

Irving Moy is the author of An American Journey: My Father, Lincoln,

Joseph Pierce and Me. This is a story of both the authors life as a son of Chinese immigrants and of Joseph Pierce, a native of China who served in the Union army. Moy is also a contributor to the National Park Service book, Asians and Pacific Islanders and the Civil War. He is the President of the 14th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry living history unit where he does an impression of Corporal Joseph Pierce.

Deb Novotny is a Pennsylvania native, retired history teacher and a Licensed Battlefield Guide for more than 30 years. Novotny is the leading authority on the history of Evergreen Cemetery and sits on the cemetery board. She has been involved in giving tours of the cemetery and erecting a monument to Elizabeth Thorne, the caretaker’s wife, who buried more than 100 soldiers after the battle.

Jared Peatman graduated from Gettysburg College, earned his master’s degree from Virginia Tech and Ph.D. from Texas A&M. He is a faculty member at the George Washington University Center for Excellence in Public Leadership and the Lincoln Leadership Institute at Gettysburg. Peatman is the author of The Long Shadow of

Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

John Schildt is a battlefield guide at Antietam National Battlefield. He has been a lecturer and guide for the Gettysburg College Civil War Institute, Chicago CWRT, and other groups. He has written many books on Antietam including Frederick in the Civil War

and Hills of Glory.

Jim Schmick is the founder of The Camp Curtin Historical Society and served on the Cumberland County / 150 Civil War Anniversary Committee. Jim is the co-author of the book, Civil War Harrisburg. He has been recognized by the Pennsylvania Senate and House for his preservation efforts and has been named Historian of the Year by the Cumberland County Historical Society.

Dr. Edward Steers is one of the foremost authorities on the Lincoln assassination. He has written eight books about Lincoln and other aspects of American history, including the critically acclaimed: Blood on the Moon: The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Steers has also appeared on several television productions on the History Channel regarding Lincoln’s assassination as well as the Today

Show.
