Righteous Procopius the Fool-For-Christ and Wonderworker of Ustiug, VologdaCommemorated on July 8

Blessed Procopius of Usya, Fool-for-Christ The incorrupt relics of St Procopius were uncovered during the eighteenth century near the Entry of the Theotokos parish church in Ustya (Vologda diocese) and placed in the church, where for two hundred years they remained in open view, a source of numerous healings. No account of the origin and life of the holy saint of God has been preserved. His name be-came known when he himself revealed it in a vision to a pious local inhabitant named Savela.

In connection with an increase in the number of miraculous healings, the relics of St Procopius were examined in 1696 (or 1645) and in 1739. After this a chapel in honor of the saint was consecrated in the church where his relics rest. His icon was painted, and a Service to him was composed.

In 1818 the universal celebration of the saint was established. +

Beware The Summer Slump!

By Fr. Gleb McFatter “Summertime, and the livin’ is easy...” We all recognize this famous song from Gershwin’s ‘Porgy and Bess.’ Our lives are filled with outdoor activities, vacations and the annual summer camps for our children. All of these activities are of benefit to us, except when they begin to interfere with our spiritual life.

Many priests lament the drop in attendance at holy services during the summer months. They search for various ways to impress upon the faithful the importance of not only attending the services, but keeping the daily rule of prayer, almsgiving and spiritual reading alive as well. As a priest in one of the vacation “mec-cas” of America, I have heard all sorts of excuses why locals and visitors alike “cannot” attend various serv-ices. In fact, recently a fellow priest described a conversation he overheard at coffee-hour. A woman re-marked to her friend “I didn’t come to Florida to go to church, I came to go to the casino.” How sad.

I am reminded of the story of Mary and Martha where, in Luke 10:41-42, Christ reminds Martha that she is concerned about many things “But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” Mary’s priority, of sitting at the feet of Jesus, learning, was the correct one. Even though we are blessed with the ability to enjoy all the “fruits” of summer, we should continue to keep our priorities clear and focused on Christ and his commandments. Neglecting our prayers, spiritual reading, helping others and attending the services – even for a short time – will adversely affect our relationship with God and to others.

Like Mary, our priority should be to spiritually sit at the feet of Christ, listening and learning from him, for the time is short and eternity will not be a “summertime of easy livin’ ” if we fail to keep our spiritual lives on track. We should enjoy the summer. It is a great gift from God. However, we need to remember to keep him at the center of it!

Listen therefore, O kings, and un-derstand; learn, O judges of the ends of the earth. Give ear, you that rule over multitudes, and boast of many nations. For your dominion was given you from the Lord, and your sovereignty from the Most High, who will search out your works and inquire into your plans.
