UPDATE FROM SESSION

On Tuesday, August 5th, The Committee on Ministry approved the necessary documents for our Interim Pastor Search Committee to begin their work. References have already been provided by Presbytery and the committee’s work has begun.

In the meantime, the Session of Old First is charged with leading the church. For a period of time, while the church, through a Pastor Nominating Committee seeks a new pastor for the congregation, an Interim Pastor, once selected, will serve us. Part of the reason for an Interim Pastor is to provide for the managing of the church’s business, worship and spiritual life. He or she will also serve as a kind of bridge from what has been in the life of our Church, to what our ministry in the future will be.

Once the Interim Pastor is in place, you will be asked to participate in and give input into developing the guidelines for the selection of our next full time pastor. In the past it was called a Mission Study, now it is called a Plumb Line study. We, as a Session ask for your cooperation in participating in this study when undertaken.

Please support us by cherishing what is past while working for today and looking forward to tomorrow. Allow our Interim Pastor, when he/she arrives, to be your pastor. Remember, roles are changing, but someone new must now take over the pastoral roles and duties. We pray you will help make this transition a posi-tive experience by supporting the Session and the search committees during this important time in our Church’s life. God Bless, Tom Bosch Clerk of Session

19

May you be showered with all God’s best blessings today and always.

If you haven’t already submitted the dates for your birthday and anniversary, please let the church office know as soon as possible so we can list them in the Weathervane for the appropriate months. Please note that since there is no Weathervane for the months of January, July, and August, these special days will be listed in the previous months’ issues.

Birthdays

Sing a song of Birthdays Full of fun and cheer

And may you keep on having them For many a happy year.

You are invited to contribute to the news and newsworthiness of our congregation! The Weathervane is published by Old First Church and distributed to members and friends of Old First Church.

The deadline for the October issue of the Weathervane is September 15 @ noon.

Please mail, hand deliver, or e-mail submissions to the Church office at [email protected]

or [email protected]

Weathervane assembly will be the last Wednesday of each month. Any one who is available and would like to help out, please let the church office know. Thank you. Also, if you do not want to receive a paper copy of the Weathervane so we can reduce postage cost, please let the office or me know. Thanks.

WEATHERVANE DEADLINE

If anyone has not been receiving the weekly e-mail updates, please let the church office know. Thank you.

Keep in Touch …

...When going to Huntington Hospital, be sure you list “Old First Presbyterian Church” as your church. Hospital workers provide lists of Protestants and Presbyterians, but often do not know what “Old First’s” affiliation may be.

...If you are aware of a member in the hospital, please let us know. Many people are admitted through emergency and will not appear on any church lists. Your minister is there often and wants to call on you. Please help by informing the church. We care.

OFC Book Club “New” Book Discussion

Book Study Group Resumes Sunday, Sept. 21st 11:15 am (Fiske Room) “THE POWER OF PRAYING FOR YOUR ADULT CHILDREN”

By Stormie O'Martin

Questions? Call Anne Gunthner @ 786-5502

Just because your children are grown up doesn't mean they don't need your prayers. In some ways they need them more than ever. Stormie offers you a gathering of heartfelt prayers from one of her most popular books, The Power of Praying for Your Adult Children. This little-but-powerful book of prayer and Scripture is ideally sized for mothers or fathers to pull from purse or pocket throughout the day for quick and meaningful talks with God about their grown children's relationships, faith, finances, struggles, direction, and parenting. This compact resource unveils the power of prayer to protect, nur-ture, and guide. It offers parents the comfort, reassurance, and wis-dom of God's promises for them and their adult child's life and future.

Community Food Council

The Community Food Council is in need of donations of non-perishable food items, canned goods and items such as toilet paper, (always needed) which

are not covered by food stamps. Please bring in your donations on Communion Sunday

Mac & Cheese, Canned Fruit. Thank you for your generous donations.

Youth Ministry Update

“Kindness is a language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see”- (Mark Twain)

I hope that you all had a wonderful, fun, and relaxing summer! We have another year of exciting events, trips, lessons, prayer services and crafts planned for the upcoming year. In September and October, the youth will be focused on stories of creation in Genesis. We will learn about taking care of animals and do some work with Animal Rescue Organizations.

Wednesday-September 10th—prayer service, crafts, open gym and dinner. Wednesday-September 17th–Youth group- lesson on creation, crafts, dinner. Sunday- September 21st–Sunday School begins- Ice Cream Social to follow. Sunday- September 21st – TUXIS begins (Training under Christ in Service)

6:30- 8:00 p.m. Wednesday- September 24th – speaker (s) on caring for animals.

We are so excited about the revival of TUXIS. As some of you may know there was a TUXIS reunion at OFC in July. This is a youth group for Junior High and High School students. We will have pizza and discuss community service ideas, events, and programs. There will be some free time and the gym will be open. All are welcome and bring friends.

We are also so excited about the beginning of our youth programs once again this September. I will be asking for parent volunteers on Wednesday evening to en-sure that the programs continue to run smoothly. Further, we will be asking par-ents to make dinners or come early and prepare dinners with kids- make pizza, pasta dinners, sandwiches etc. We will have sign-up sheets on September 10th Wednesday evening and in Parish Hall on the 14th.

Please do not hesitate to call or contact me with any questions or concerns.

I am looking forward to another great school year.

With kind regards, Katie

What is Alpha?

The Alpha course is a practical introduction to the Christian faith that gives guests an opportunity to explore the meaning of life. Alpha is fun, relaxed and totally non-pressured (that’s probably why over 19 mil. people around the world have already done it).

Listen, Learn, discuss and discover. Ask anything. Alpha is a place where no questions is off limits.

Alpha’s Three Main Elements—Good Food, Alpha Talk, & Discussion

How does it work?

Each Alpha course session begins with food, followed by a short talk looking at a different aspect of the Christian faith. After that, there is a time for discussion in a friendly small group.

Who is Alpha for?

Alpha is for everyone, especially: •Those wanting to investigate Christianity •Those who are new to the Christian faith •Those wanting to grow in understanding and faith

What is the cost?

There is no charge for the Alpha course, although you may be asked to make a contribution toward food.
