THE CONFLICT In July 1839 – The Enslaved Africans Took
Control of The Ship. United States Gets Involved
La Amistad was captured off the coast of Long Island, New York, by the Revenue Cutter USSS Washington.
AFRICANS TAKE OVER LA AMISTAD On July 2, 1839 – Sengbe Pieh
(Commonly known as Cinque) led the 53 enslaved Africans in a revolt against their captors.
Freed themselves using a rusty file. Attacked their captors with cane
knives. Africans demanded to be sallied
home. Captain, Don Pedro Montez, lied to them
sailed along the North American cost near Long Island, NY.
La Amistad was taken into U.S. custody.
THE COURT CASE United States vs. The
Amistad Reached the Supreme
Court in 1841 Court Ruling: The
Africans had been illegally transported and held as slaves and ordered them free.
The Slaves Returned to Africa in 1842
