When I was growing up, my family went to church every week. But in to-day’s day and age with sports activities and working on weekends, culture has made attending church once a month the new norm. It is easy to miss church if you feel you don’t fit or feel like no one would miss you if you were gone. Here are ten reasons you’ll want to attend our next church ser-vice:

1. So You Can Enjoy Community: The number one reason why I love

our church is for the community I receive. There is a reason why Scripture refers to members of churches as “brothers and sisters.” Church is not just a place to go to on Sundays, but rather a gathering of people who have committed to walking their spiritual journeys interdependently rather than independently. Some of the people I call my dearest friends are those I have met within the church and have had the pleasure of serving along-side.

2. So You Can Use Your Gifts: God has gifted each one of us not only

with natural talents, like singing or playing an instrument, but also with spiritual gifts, that when used, build up the church body in unique ways. If you don’t know what your gifts are, I encourage you to take a spiritual gifts in-ventory or read biblical pas-sages such as 1 Corinthians 12-14, Romans 12, Ephesians 4, and 1 Peter 4. where you might best be suited to use those gifts. Maybe it is an existing ministry, or maybe our church is missing an important ministry that you can create yourself! The possibilities are endless.

3. So You Can Discover Your

Purpose: Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” de-clares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” God has a plan for all of us. God knows the hairs on our heads and has ordered every one of our steps. But finding out the purpose and plan is easier said than done. Members of our church know you and can speak words of encouragement and affirmation into your life. They can help navigate through the muddy waters we call life. Seeking wise counsel is one of the many benefits of being a part of a church, and something that is difficult to find outside family members and close friends.

4. So You Can Find Connection: I have

met many people during my time in ministry. Some people seem exactly like me while others seem the complete op-posite. We get the chance to meet and connect with people we would-n’t have met otherwise.

5. So You Can Worship: Wor-

ship can happen any time of the day and any day of the week. I can worship in the car, in my room or when I’m feeling down. But there is nothing like getting together in a room full of other worshippers and singing my heart out to God with others who share that same desire. My life is enriched when I worship with others and I can’t do that sitting at home by myself.

(Continued from page 1) 6. So You Can Learn the Word: Sundays

(hopefully!) give you the opportunity to hear the Word preached in ways that help you under-stand it better and in unique ways you may not

have seen yourself if you studied it on your own.

7. So You Can Participate in

Missions: Our church has a high emphasis on missions. We can do so much more together. (Remember last year – we partnered with our community and collected and dis-tributed over 1,000 coats!)

8. So You Can Practice Gener-

osity: When I give of my money, I often think of how far reaching my

money goes. I imagine getting to heaven and meeting people I never met on earth whose life was touched because I gave through our church. Where else can I allow my dollars to create such an impact on others’ lives?

9. So You Can Forge Lifelong Friendships:

Scripture references church members as the body of Christ. Once you make friends at church, you are forever bonded to them. Who

can’t use another friend or two in their lives?

10. So You Can Enjoy Food: Last of all, the food! Table fellow-ship is an ancient and celebrated practice. I guarantee that you won’t find better cooks and bakers than at UPC! This fall, get in the habit of going to church regularly. The positives out-weigh the negatives and you never

know what opportunity God may present you with because of your attendance!

On The Pastor’s Night Stand

The book has been turned into a four-week small group study. If there is enough interest, I would love to have a

group form around it – just let me know! As al-ways, I’d love to discuss the book over coffee or ice cream and if you need as-sistance purchasing the book, please do not hesi-tate to contact me.

This summer I read many books, one particularly stuck out in my mind. I read “Defying Gravity: Break Free from the Culture of More” by Tom Berlin.

Mr. Berlin recognizes that our possessions can create unbearable weight and affect our ability to serve and thrive. He seeks to help us defy gravity and find free-dom? He explores what is required to sustain a vibrant life, what we need versus what we want, and what we can do to avoid being pulled into the orbit of materialism.

We are putting together an Advent Devotional Booklet for the upcoming Advent sea-son and we need YOUR HELP! Please share a favorite Christmas memory and a prayer. Submissions can be given to Rev. Annalie and are needed by November 1. Thank you!

Finance Ministry Team Update

Income and Expenses

As of July 31, 2018, income received ($114,770) was less than op-erating expenses incurred ($135,250). A withdrawal from the UPC Fund of $10,000 was made in January 2018 to support the capital expenses from 2017. An additional withdrawal of $15,000 was made in March 2018 to help offset increased operating expenses, primarily tied to snow removal. A third withdrawal was made in June 2018 to help close the gap between income and operating expenses.

Thank you for your continued support. Ideally, offerings each week should be about $4,500 to support our budget; we are currently averaging $3,700. Please see the chart below for a comparison of income received to operating expenses by month.

Team Actions

The Finance Ministry Team will continue to monitor and report income and ex-penses on a monthly basis and look for ways to control expenses.

If you have any questions, suggestions, or comments for the FMT, please feel free to

contact its chair, Rob MacPherson. You can do so in person, by phone (610-742-

7941), or email ([email protected]). You may also contact the church treas-

urer, Mary Hewes, by phone at 610-347-2327 or by email at [email protected].

Remember the church in your will!

Boy Scout Troop 22 (chartered by UPC), celebrated the achievements of another

young man who attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Troy C. Macie, son of Rene Macie and Sheila Ryan-Macie, received his Eagle award on July 22, 2018 at Unionville Presbyterian Church.

Troy is a 2018 graduate of UHS. This fall he will attend the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY, where he will study audio and music engineering.

For his Eagle project he led the design, plan-ning and building of a marimba (wooden xylophone) at Coopersmith Park in West Goshen Township. Troy and his dad also built and donated drums and a metallo-phone to the park to round out the instru-ment offering. Troy was very interested in sharing the gift of music he has been given and the instruments have been the source of much joy and creativity for children at the park, including those attending summer camps at Coopersmith.

Congratulations to this fine young man of our community!

tions of his earthly life. As the story builds to its

stunning conclusion, Eddie desperately seeks

redemption in the still-unknown last act of his

life: Was it a heroic success or a devastating fail-

ure? The answer, which comes from the most

unlikely of sources, is as inspirational as a

glimpse of heaven itself.

In The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Mitch

Albom gives us an astoundingly original story

that will change everything you've ever thought

about the afterlife--and the meaning of our lives

here on earth. With a timeless tale, appealing to

all, this is a book that readers of fine fiction, and

those who loved Tuesdays with Morrie, will

treasure.

The Wednesday group will meet from 9:30-

11AM and the Thursday group will be from 7:00

-8:30PM. The cost of the supplies is $15, with

scholarships available. Please let Rev. Annalie

know of your interest.

Fall Program

One of my favorite books be-

came one of my favorite movies,

Mitch Albom's "The Five People

You Meet in Heaven." It is one

of the rare cases in which (in

my opinion) the movie is actu-

ally BETTER than the book.

Beginning Wednesday, Septem-

ber 19 and Thursday, Septem-

ber 20 there will be bible study/

discussion groups using the

book and the movie as our

guide. "All endings are also be-

ginnings. We just don't know it

at the time..."

Eddie is a grizzled war veteran

who feels trapped in a meaning-

less life of fixing rides at a sea-

side amusement park. His days

are a dull routine of work, lone-

liness, and regret.

Then, on his 83rd birthday,

Eddie dies in a tragic accident,

trying to save a little girl from a

falling cart. He awakens in the

afterlife, where he learns that

heaven is not a lush Garden of

Eden, but a place where your

earthly life is explained to you

by five people. These people

may have been loved ones or

distant strangers. Yet each of

them changed your path for-

ever.

One by one, Eddie's five people

Game Day/Fun Day: September 16 On our first regular Sunday school day, please bring a game or favorite activity to play. We will have fun with games and share a special snack!

Serving Sundays: September 23 and October 28

The 4th Sunday of the month is special when the children do different jobs in the wor-ship service. These jobs include Greeter, Acolyte, Worship Leader and more! Seeing the children serve the church in this special way makes everyone smile! Look for the

Sign-Up Genius to come by email. On Serving Sundays we often collect items and have an inter-generational service project immediately following the worship service.

The children learn about being a part of “The little church with a big heart” and giving to our local Southern Chester County Community.

World Communion Sunday: Sunday October 7 Join us as we celebrate communion with other churches around the world! The children join their families in worship on World Communion and everyone shares different breads from around the world. Together we are reminded of God’s love for us and we can share that love with others near and far. Please stay after the worship service and enjoy time together and a meal of soup and bread in Fellow-ship Hall. Everyone is invited!

Pet Blessing / Community Ice Cream Social: October 14

Bring your pet or a picture of an animal that you would like to be blessed and a donation for “LaMancha Animal Rescue” at 2:00 p.m. to the back yard of the manse. (They need canned cat food and dog food; for a more detailed list, please check out their website, www.lamanchaanimalrescue.org) There will be a pet photographer, an exotic animal show and raffles for prizes. Please tell your friends and neighbors!

Trunk or Treat: October 28 For this variation of trick or treat, children dressed in costumes will safely walk from car to car in a parking lot and collect treats from 4:00PM to 5:00PM Adults and families decorate their cars and park in the Unionville Presby-terian Church parking lot by 3:30 and provide treats for the children to “trick or treat”. Children should dress in costume and bring a bag or something for collecting treats. All can enjoy fellowship, cider and donuts served at 5:00.
