THE MESSENGER The United Methodist Church of Fayetteville March 2017 WWW.FAYETTEVILLEUMC.ORG Pastor’s Corner The depth of our faith is the measure of our beliefs. When we say that we love the lord, or that we are followers we are making some important statements that tell others who we are. Our physical, mental, and spiritual connections all come together when we say that Jesus is Lord, or when we say that we believe in Jesus is our Savior. This Lent I want to explore with you what it truly mans to be a disciple. We know when Jesus chose his disciples there was careful planning and thought. The impul- sive Peter who joyfully and enthusiastically joined Jesus, followed him wherever he went. It was Peter who tried to walk on water, and Peter who was watching carefully as Jesus was being interrogated lying low while also denying he knew Jesus 3 times before daylight. The depth of his faith is beyond an- ything we have experienced. It was also Peter who stood up on what we know as Pentecost and informed the people that they were not drunk. In essence, Peter was present at the creation of the Christian Church. I believe most of us would like to have a faith like that -- and yet I know it is difficult, even foolish, to think that we can walk on water. What we can do is strengthen our faith so we are able to cope with the various and numerous stresses of daily liv- ing. Faith needs constant affirmation, continual stimulation, and clearly understood boundaries and expectations. As we enter Lent this year, it is important that we look beyond the easy answers, and prepare our- selves for information and experiences that chal- lenge and frighten us. This year Easter arrives on Sunday, April 16th. We will be worshipping every Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm in the sanctuary during Lent. Communion will be served each Wednesday night. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday, April 9th, and that morning we will celebrate Jesus’ Tri- umphal Entry into Jerusalem. Holy Thursday, April 13th at 7:00 pm, there will be a service helping us connect with Jesus’ preparation for his disciples’ “Last Supper” along with his arrest and appearance before Pontius Pilate. On Good Friday, April 14th, our evening worship, again at 7:00 pm, will focus on the crucifixion. We can only understand the strength and power of the Easter Story if we experience the Triumph of Palm Sunday, the emotion of Holy Thursday, and the desolation of Good Friday, lead- ing up to the Exaltation of Easter Sunday. We will have two services each Sunday, at 8:15 and 10:30 am. I hope you will come and journey with us through Lent and Easter. This is a life changing part of our ministry. Please read this March newsletter carefully; there is a lot happening and we are moving in multi- ple directions to bring the message of Jesus into our lives and into our homes. Come and join us in wor- ship, fellowship, study and missions. I hope you will invite your friends, family and neighbors to come in fellowship through this outstanding journey of faith and fellowship. Blessings, Pastor Bob

Pastor’s Corner

The depth of our faith is the measure of our beliefs. When we say that we love the lord, or that we are followers we are making some important statements that tell others who we are. Our physical, mental, and spiritual connections all come together when we say that Jesus is Lord, or when we say that we believe in Jesus is our Savior. This Lent I want to explore with you what it truly mans to be a

disciple.

We know when Jesus chose his disciples there was careful planning and thought. The impul-sive Peter who joyfully and enthusiastically joined Jesus, followed him wherever he went. It was Peter who tried to walk on water, and Peter who was watching carefully as Jesus was being interrogated lying low while also denying he knew Jesus 3 times before daylight. The depth of his faith is beyond an-

ything we have experienced.

It was also Peter who stood up on what we know as Pentecost and informed the people that they were not drunk. In essence, Peter was present

at the creation of the Christian Church.

I believe most of us would like to have a faith like that -- and yet I know it is difficult, even foolish, to think that we can walk on water. What we can do is strengthen our faith so we are able to cope with the various and numerous stresses of daily liv-ing. Faith needs constant affirmation, continual stimulation, and clearly understood boundaries and

expectations.

As we enter Lent this year, it is important that we look beyond the easy answers, and prepare our-selves for information and experiences that chal-

lenge and frighten us.

This year Easter arrives on Sunday, April 16th. We will be worshipping every Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm in the sanctuary during Lent. Communion will be served each Wednesday night. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday, April 9th, and that morning we will celebrate Jesus’ Tri-umphal Entry into Jerusalem. We can only understand the strength and power of the Easter Story if we experience the Triumph of Palm Sunday, the emotion of Holy Thursday, and the desolation of Good Friday, lead-ing up to the Exaltation of Easter Sunday. We will have two services each Sunday, at 8:15 and 10:30 am. I hope you will come and journey with us through Lent and Easter. This is a life changing part

of our ministry.

Please read this March newsletter carefully; there is a lot happening and we are moving in multi-ple directions to bring the message of Jesus into our lives and into our homes. Come and join us in wor-ship, fellowship, study and missions. I hope you will invite your friends, family and neighbors to come in fellowship through this outstanding journey of faith and fellowship. Blessings, Pastor Bob

BOARD OF TRUSTEES MESSAGE

Summary from the Jan. 31, 2017 Church Council Meeting – submitted by Judy Smith

The main focus of the meeting was discussion and approval of the 2017 Income & Spending Plan. As presented by the Finance Committee, the Plan included projected income of $307,077 and projected expenditures of $315,726, resulting in a “faith factor” of $8,649. Following a motion to remove $4,000 allocated for the 40 Year Plan (on the expenditure side) and use $3,000 from “memorials” to increase income, the faith factor was reduced to $1,649. The motion passed unanimously as did the thereby modified 2017 Plan.

Calendaring of upcoming events resulted in the movement of the Yard/Garage Sale from May to June 3, 2017.
