CHAMBER CONNECTION

M e s s a g e F r o m t h e P r e s i d e n t …

This month I wanted to take a few moments to say thank you to a few Board members whose terms on the Board ended on December 31, 2013. The Chamber has been very fortunate in having really good Board members who not only devote their time to the Board, but, in most cases, other Chamber committees as well. They are truly working to make the Chamber and the community the best they can be.

Christopher Bross joined the Board in July of 2006. Chris is the Chair of the Membership Committee. He has also attended nearly all of the prospective member breakfasts where he shares with the benefits of belonging to the Chamber from a business person prospective.

Bill Fuge joined the Board in July of 2006. Bill served as Board Chair in 2012. He also served as treasurer from 2007 – 2009. During Bill’s tenure on the Board he has served on the following committees: Executive, Membership, Community & Government Affairs, and Economic Development.

Scott Mackey joined the Board in January 2010. Scott served as co-chair of the Tourism committee. He was also active on sub-committees of tourism. Scott could also always be counted on to provide an item for a “WOW” bag welcoming groups to the community.

Amy Pauley joined the Board in January of 2007. Amy served as Treasurer from 2009-2012. She was a member of the Executive Committee from 2007-2012 and has been Chair of the ATHENA committee since 2009. Amy’s experience with non-profits was valued by the Board.

If you see, Chris, Bill, Scott, or Amy please thank them for their service to the Chamber.

Ralph Sheridan Golf Classic 2011

For many new and expanding small businesses, the process can be intimidating and confusing, from where to find financing, who to partner with for supplies/distribution, to marketing. The Chamber offers many resources to help small businesses succeed. While many members may have heard about some of the partnerships and resources, there may still be some confusion about how to access resources, and what these partnerships can do to help.

One such resource is the Chamber’s partnership with Greater Rochester SCORE. SCORE is a nonprofit lead by volunteers to help small businesses start, grow, and prosper. SCORE is a resource partner for the Small Business Association. These volunteers are business owners and business executives in the greater Rochester area. Currently SOCRE has about 90 volunteers from all areas of private business and nonprofit, from accounting to new media, from startup to business succession.

One of the major services provided by SCORE is business counseling, either one-on-one, or team approach. While some may perceive this kind of counseling as focused on new business, some of the greatest successes have come from existing businesses unsure of the next step, or struggling to overcome some impediment to success. The broad range of skills SCORE volunteers hold can provide the right combination of knowledge to mentor business owners through good times and bad.

In 2013, the SCORE office located at the Chamber experienced an increase of nearly 25%. While many of these counseling sessions were for new businesses, a number of existing small businesses discussed expansions or direction changes, tested new project ideas, and rethought underperforming business strategies. Meeting with a trained and confidential SCORE mentor likely saved time and money over diving in unprepared.

SCORE also offers several workshops that may be of use to our members. Upcoming workshops include international trade, Operation Entrepreneurship (focused on unique benefits of veteran owned business), business financing, and government contracting. While Counseling is at no charge to clients, workshops often carry a nominal fee to cover materials and space. For complete workshop schedule or to register, visit www.greaterrochester.score.org.

As always if there are any questions regarding how the Chamber can help your business succeed, please do not hesitate to call Thomas Lyon, Economic Development Specialist at 585-394-4400, Ext. 208 or [email protected]. If you are interested in meeting with a SCORE Councilor, please feel free to call the Chamber to set up an appointment, 585-394-4400 x205.

Unique Seminar Offering For Local Chamber Members

One of the important roles of Rochester Business Alliance and local Chambers of Commerce is facilitating cooperative efforts and networking opportunities among our members. One the ways we do this is by offering educational workshops and instructional seminars that become a conduit for members to work together in ways that are mutually beneficial.

A new and unique program we are offering is the Marketing & Advertising Roundtable. Many small and medium sized businesses today need expert marketing and advertising assistance to succeed, but the cost of securing professional-level support is beyond most of their financial means. This roundtable is our answer to this challenge.

Business owners are invited to join others like themselves in a group discussion about their marketing and advertising efforts where they can share ideas, offer constructive feedback and gather information that can save each other considerable time and money. RBA training partner, Marketizing Concepts, will conduct the 2 ½ hour session and work with attendees to improve their marketing and advertising plans. In addition, each attendee will receive a one-hour individual consultation outside the roundtable at no additional charge. RBA is opening this program to your local Chamber members for the same price our members pay - $90.

Registration is easy and quick by contacting Michele Hefferon at 256-4614 and mentioning this flyer. We hope to see your members join ours in this new program that will help each grow their respective businesses.
