TheBerryAt our last David Berry Hospital Auxiliary meeting we had a very special surprise when the Nowra Quilters represented the Auxiliary with 4 beautiful quilts for the Gate Cottage. The Gate Cottage is for the use of people who have loved ones in David Berry Hospital. A very sincere Thank You to the Nowra Quilters. The quilts will help the rooms be more cozy for families staying at the Cottage.Acting D.O.M. Karon Stilgis demonstrated a new trolley we have purchased. The trolley is designed for people who only have the use of one arm due to a stroke and helps them to get around and also in the long term helps them move around without help. Among other items purchased by the Auxiliary, and now in use, are a T.V, C.D player, head phones and iPads. At our Christmas lunch we all supplied food items to be given to a charity. A lot of items were given on the day and many more later. These items were given to the Women’s Refuge at Nowra. Thank you all for these gifts as they are must needed and appreciated by the women who mostly, due to circumstance, arrive with nothing.A request has been made for a tip bed to make things easier for shifting people. This will be purchased in the near future. The hospital does give us a hope list each year and so far we have been able to fulfi ll their requests.

David Berry Hospital Auxiliary Report

FOR YOUR DIARYA change of date for our Book and Bake Day. In the last Town Crier, the date mentioned was 14th March. I am sorry but that has had to be changed and will now be on 21st. March. If you have any books, must be in good order, please see one of the Committee. This sale will not be as big as previous because the Committee is much smaller now. Also on 1st. April will be our usual Easter Chicken Egg Day, a big hit for children. This is another of our fund raising events and thank you to all the people who knit for us. We will hopefully be having something each month to raise funds to purchase items for the David Berry Hospital. Being a small group and with hospital items being expensive, fund raising becomes necessary.

28 March is the date of the NSW state election. The purpose of this column is not to state a political position, but to encourage readers to consider the long-term implications of how they vote. Two important issues relating to sustainability are the proposed privatization of electricity power poles and the exploratory drilling for coal seam gas. Both these issues involve non-renewable energy resources. The sale of publicly owned assets is a one off windfall for the government, but the loss of a future source of revenue, and a loss of quality assurance. Looking at the example of privatization of poles in Victoria, which occurred after the 1992 election, there is evidence of job losses in the sector, a rise in consumer complaints, and huge increases in electricity bills. In 2013 the Australia Institute calculated the cost of electricity to consumers in Victoria increased by one hundred and seventy percent over the previous seven years, four times higher than the consumer price index over that time. While the phasing out of coal powered electricity is not likely in the near future, investment in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind will decrease our reliance on non-renewable resources, and reduce carbon emissions. In March last year the NSW government announced a six-month freeze on coal seam gas exploration licenses. However, in November 2014, the government announced that coal seam exploration licenses would be considered, including in areas of drinking water catchment, with landholders having no legal rights to oppose any proposals. In January this year, the gas company AGL temporarily suspended its operations at Gloucester, after the discovery of potentially toxic chemicals in fl ow-back water. The implication is that even with investigations carried out prior to works being undertaken, the potential for contamination of groundwater and water catchments remains.Any exploration licenses granted in the Shoalhaven area could potentially threaten the Shoalhaven River, other smaller watercourses, and aquifers. It is encouraging to read that New York banned fracking (hydraulic fracturing used in coal seam gas extraction) in December last year. While

SUSTAINABILITY AND THE STATE ELECTION

the ban in New York does not have a huge impact on the supply of CSG, it is symbolic of a community’s concern for clean water and a healthy environment. Activists in Colorado and California are pushing for a similar ban. The short cycle of elections being held in NSW every four years means politicians are forced to address matters of immediate concern, but issues of sustainability require actions that may not show an immediate result. While some politicians believe that their job is “making Australians richer”, we will all be poorer, and worse off, with polluted waterways and an environment that is permanently damaged.

OTHER SUSTAINABILITY NEWSThis January, New York offi cially banned plastic foam containers, proving that where there is a will for change, entrenched behaviors based on convenience can be turned around. Polystyrene foam cannot be recycled, meaning it’s a one-use product that ends up in landfi ll. In 2014 the city collected almost 23 tonnes of foam containers alone. To put this into perspective, the Clean Up Australia Day volunteers collected just under 16 tonnes of rubbish across the country in 2014. Almost 7 tonnes of that was in NSW.The NSW government recently announced the introduction of deposits on drinks containers, with a likely rebate of ten cents. This comes despite strong opposition by the beverage industry, in particular Coca-Cola Amatil. Unusually perhaps, Keep Australia Beautiful is opposed to the scheme. However, as the organization is partially funded by Coca-Cola Amatil they can hardly be said to have an unbiased view. Our state government says it is committed to this initiative, which is great news for the environment, but we are way behind the South Australian scheme, which was introduced back in 1997. The Northern Territory introduced a similar scheme in 2012. Some of the big players in the beverage industry, Coca-Cola, Schwepps and Lion, took the NT government to court over the introduction of that scheme. The same industry threatened the NSW Liberal government with a four

million dollar advertising campaign against them if they supported a container deposit scheme. If you feel strongly about this or any other issue, write to a politician. Writing a letter takes a short amount of time and has greater impact than signing a petition, or “liking” a Facebook page. Here are some politicians you might like to write to:Rob Stokes, Minister for the EnvironmentKevin Humphries, Minister for Natural Resources, Lands and WaterAnthony Roberts, Minister for Resources and Energy

Please contact Sheila Keats on 4464 2049 if you wish to donate any items and they are to be delivered to Sheila at 1 Windsor Drive before Wednesday 25th February. The entrance is on Victoria Street.SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE RED CROSSThe Red Cross provides many services. Some of them are in our own local community, others involve serving in other communities or overseas. A good example of this is the work of:THE YOUNG PARENTS PROGRAMRed Cross Young Parents Program recently held its annual Recognition Ceremony. This ceremony honours both the young parents themselves and the volunteers that support them. The Red Cross Young Parents Program, now in its 21st year, is a holistic support program for young parents with minimal family or community support. Without the help of Red Cross the proud young women and men taking part in this recognition ceremony would run the risk of poverty, homelessness and having their children taken into care.

The program provides tailor made intensive support from dedicated Red Cross case workers and a weekly program of guidance and education. Young parents develop the skills they need to live independently in appropriate housing, ensure the best outcomes for their children, move into employment or higher education and break the cycle of intergenerational trauma, abuse and neglect. They learn to set their own goals, work through life’s challenges and raise healthy happy kids.At the ceremony the young parents tell of their achievements such as being able to care for themselves and their children, success at studying their HSC or TAFE course, passing their driving test, being employed for two years, studying law and giving up smoking.Red Cross at the moment needs volunteers to help with various aspects of this program. Think about using life skills you have acquired to help others starting out in life.BECOMING A MEMBER OR VOLUNTEERINGIf you wish to fi nd out about becoming involved with or volunteering with the Red Cross contact the Berry Branch of the Red Cross (see Community Groups page of Town Crier for contact details), the Nowra Red Cross Offi ce (1800621433) in Graham St Nowra or go onto the Red Cross website.

The 2015 Football season will commence soon and our committee and registrars have been busy making preparations to ensure players are able to enjoy playing for our club. After being inspired by watching the Socceroos win the Asian Cup, we’re looking forward to seeing some exciting skills out on the fi eld this season. We have held a number of face-to-face registration sessions. If you missed these, you are still able to register on-line at http://www.myfootballclub.com.au/index.php?id=38 We are in need of a volunteer to run our canteen. Our canteen is a major source of funds which go towards the running of our club and helps to keep our registration costs low in comparison to other clubs in our area. If you or anyone you know may be interested in this role, please contact our committee by emailing [email protected] We are very thankful for the support of our major sponsors this year. They are the Heads Hotel, IGA Berry, Mountainside Meats Shoalhaven Heads and Bai Med Physiotherapy Nowra. We would also like to thank our team and raffl e sponsors; Caltex Shoalhaven Heads, Aquatique, Grant Taylor Building, The Treat Factory, The Little Bottler Shoalhaven Heads and H.K. Husseini & Co. Solicitors. Please support our sponsors so that we can continue to work with them in future years. On March 21 we are holding a fundraiser at the Berry Hotel. The entry fee of $10 will go to our club and we will be entertained by the band Blackberry Jam. Whether you’re a player or supporter, we hope you enjoy the Shark’s 2015 season.

‘Wagga” are the indigenous Australianquilts of the late 19th & early 20th century, made out of necessity. This lecture tells the amazing stories of the men and women who made them through many periods of hardship, right up to the Depression.Australia is rich in folk history and yet domestic crafts such as wagga have only recently been acknowledged and given due status.

Some of Wagner’s most intriguing operatic characters are women, often appearing as part-angel, part-demon. In reality they were often just as fascinating as the operatic creations. This lecture describes the gallery of women within the composer’s circle who provided the models for his female characters and sometimes changed his life and art.

Berry Show attracts the very best of the Berry Spinners and Weavers’ workThe Spinning and Weaving Section of Berry Show was well supported by the members of the Berry Spinners and Weavers group. This was an opportunity to put the best of their year’s work on public exhibition and there were some truly exceptional items from the more experienced spinners and weavers, while some of the newer members did well in the novice sections. Two Broad ribbons were awarded for excellence in Spinning and in Weaving and, in addition, this year there was an inaugural award for Most Outstanding Exhibit using Alpaca. This award is in memory of Mavis Hutchings, a long-time member of the group who sadly passed away last July at the age of 92. Mavis was an alpaca breeder and a staunch advocate for the use of Australian alpaca fi bre and the appreciation of its unique qualities. The members of the Berry Spinners and Weavers will be holding open days on 3 and 4 July when anyone is welcome to come along and see what we do and how we do it – and have a go themselves. As well as spinning and weaving, we also do lots of different things using fl eece or yarn (not only knitting and crochet). You don’t have to wait until July - if you are really keen to see what we do, visitors are welcome to our meetings on Thursday mornings at the hall at the Albany Street gate of Berry Showground, 10am-12noon. Enquiries: 4448 7575 or [email protected] school holiday craft sessions for children will be on again in the Easter holidays on Monday 13th and Wednesday 15th April. Details and how to book a place will be in the April Town Crier.

Where did February go? It was the time of the local show run. Congratulations to all our members who have graced the show ring in various events. Well done Belinda Ensor, Mia Wright -Miller, Jill Waddy and all those who made the effort. Agricultural Shows are a great opportunity for Rural communities to showcase the wide ranging talents and interests of local residents from scone baking to bull riding. Long may they continue. A highlight of any country show is the “Show Jumping” and this sport is certainly growing rapidly with increasing levels of participation and interest from the public. Berry Riding Club held a show jumping course design clinic with David Lawrence (FEI ) on 28th Feb & 1st March. The clinic was of interest to any showjumping enthusiast. Parents, young riders, competitors, coaches, course builders, designers and judges were all welcome. More information about course designing is available from Penny Rose (ph 4464 2384).Our calendar of events for the year is rapidly fi lling with something for everyone and not many blank dates available. Working Equitation will hold training days on the 14th and 15th March with Tracy Stead, 26th April and 27th, 28th June with Chris Fowles instructing. Dressage and Show jumping clinics, Skills development and competition days are also being scheduled with information always available on the website. The Berry Bypass is having a major effect on the club this year as we lose some of the grounds to the Roads and Maritime Services. Venues for some events will unavoidably change but details will be updated on Facebook and the website. A year of inconvenience and then we should be located to an exciting new Equestrian complex. In the meantime as much as possible it will be business as usual including GG’s for those who like to mix horses, coffee and cake (not all on the one plate).BRC would also like to extend a warm welcome to Ashley Adams, a talented young Three day event Rider from the USA who will be performing “Coach on Course” duties for some of our clinics this year. Ashley is willing and able to help riders at all levels. Her Curriculum vitae can be found on our website.

“Enthusiasm fi nds the opportunities, and energy and makes the most of them”

- Henry S. HuskinsOur venture into 2015 came with the enthusiastic optimism of looking beyond ourselves to the those we may help in the local and wider community. Our CWA activities are well into working mode. The busy fi ngers of the Craft ladies seemingly have not stopped but after our success, thanks to the folk attending the Berry Show. However the busyness of the ladies will take on a new vitality, and more craft etc. will be ready for the Celtic Festival. This year The Flying Doctor made an appearance at the 127th Berry Show. Berry CWA was on hand to render assistance with the access into the simulator, and whilst helping we learned more about this vital and necessary service. The Combined CWA Choir has commenced, accompanied by computer generated music. We would dearly love to have a volunteer accompanist. Is there someone out there willing to help out on a Friday morning? This year there will have a World War I theme and a poignant reminder of the 100th Anzac Day in April. Already the marching feet have been practising as well as the voices. The choir is led by Marie De La Torre and she would welcome any enquires about the choir and its needs. In the area of practical activities Berry CWA did not forget those who are not so well, and both David Berry Hospital and the South Nowra Hospital patients were visited and small gifts left. To see the welcome smile on their faces is a great reward. ERRATA. The February issue mentioned that the two scholarship recipients were awarded by the Ing family and the Berry Lions. It should have read that Mia Wright Miller and Jackson Bamber received the Ing Family Berry Alliance Scholarship. Apologies to the Berry Alliance for this error.

BERRY SHOW WOODWORK SECTION SPONSORED BY THE MEN’S SHEDOnce again the Woodwork section had a good representation of quality exhibits at the Berry Show. “The standard remains very high with a very diverse range of timber exhibits “said this year’s judge. The Men’s Shed has been the overall sponsor of the Woodwork section for a number of years and we welcome as many entries as possible from members of the community. Special congratulations to Peter Lutz and Terry Smith from the Shed who both won prizes. The Men’s Shed will be happy to once again sponsor the section in 2016.Seniors week is being held in March and the Shed will be opening its doors between 10.00am to 12 noon on 17TH March for members of the community to come in and see what projects we are working on and how we operate. At the conclusion, we will have a BBQ on the lawn for all those attending. We have been invited to join with the Berry Museum in restoring a rescue boat which has been in the possession of the Museum for a number of years. A select number of Shed members will visit the Museum next week to see if we can assist the Museum in the project which will need to be worked on in the Museum grounds. Our nesting box construction for Fulton Hogan is progressing well with a dedicated team working to have the second order completed by mid March. The Shed has lots of work on at the moment, including a project with Shoalhaven Council to restore the fence at the David Berry Memorial Park. If you have any items that require repair please call in and see us in North Street. We are open on Tuesday and Thursday and our phone number during offi ce hours is 4464 3956.

Tessa McMahon wins Berry Showgirl 2015 The Showgirl competition celebrates the role of all women in our rural community. Part of this celebration is to raise awareness in the younger generation and encourage future evolvement in this role. Involving youth in a rural tradition such as the Showgirl Competition is an investment in our com-munity. Youth involvement in agriculture encourages future sustainable growth in traditional practices for our region. My involvement in the 2015 Berry Showgirl competition began with such an understanding; the inclusion of women and youth in our community ensures a prosperous future of an incredible community. Throughout the competition myself and the other girls involved were given the opportunity to communicate with members of the community on rural practice, issues in the rural community, and issues faced by women in the wider public. The competition involves a judging process, in which each girl is evaluated as a possible ambassador for women and youth in the local area. We were judged on personality, confi dence, ambition and life goals, general knowledge, rural knowledge, presentation and speech. It is important as showgirls we display knowledge of the local community and current affairs, we were also judged on our background in rural proceedings.Throughout the competition we were involved in public events, and were given the chance to see the inner workings of the Berry Show. This gave us tremendous insight into the way our township embraces such a wonderful part of our rural community. No matter what the future holds for the next level of the Showgirl competition, I will forever be grateful for the support of my sponsor, The Berry Pharmacy, the entire Showgirl Committee, The Berry Show Society, all my fellow Showgirls, and every single person who contributed to making this year’s Show, “The Greatest Show In Town!” Tessa McMahon The Berry Show Society and Showgirl Committee wish to congratulate Tessa McMahon for being such a wonderful ambassador for rural youth and wish her every success at the Zone fi nals later this month.

Fifty fi ve years ago, women were not encouraged to speak their minds, or pursue business and community interests, but times have changed and a good example of this change is VIEW clubs of Australia. The year 2015 marks the VIEW club’s 55th anniversary. VIEW stands for Voice, Interests and Education of Women, and was established by the children’s charity The Smith Family, to offer women the opportunity to be heard on issues of national interest and provide a service to the community. It is now one of Australia’s leading women’s volunteer organisations, supporting the education of disadvantaged children throughout the country With much needed help from The Smith Family’s educational support programmes.VIEW members come from all walks of life, and our 350 clubs have spread into every state and territory including Berry, and surrounding districts. Regular meetings keep our members informed, with news from other clubs. In addition to fund raising, VIEW members give their time and talents in many ways, including reading with children to advance their literacy skills, or help with homework after school, at Smith Family Learning clubs. It is vitally important that we continue to increase our membership, and welcome women of all ages with their various talents, and experiences in life, to help us carry on doing what we love to do, helping needy families, and making the future brighter for our disadvantaged children. Berry Evening View meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at The Berry Bowling Club 6.30 for 7.00 Bookings for dinner can be made by ringing Kath Bowley on 44641032 .You can be sure of a warm welcome, and a pleasant evening, we look forward to seeing you.

“Securing People and Property in the 21st Century”

Master Lic. 404856032

Club members gathered on Valentine’s Day at the beautiful Woodhill Mountain property of Robin and Ros Brooks to launch our 2015 gardening year. We had looked forward to the charm of mingling outdoors on a late summer afternoon but were greeted instead by rain with storm clouds, not blue skies, crowning the escarpment. The relaxed mood was not dampened, however, and there was a bright side. Our gardens were getting well watered!Far worse conditions altogether met a recent U3A tour to Tasmania led by B&DGC President, Denis Simond, when the travellers visited the Sub-Antarctic Plant House in the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. Displaying the unique fl ora of Macquarie Island, a panoramic mural of bleak beauty set the scene while a fogging system and fan-driven chiller system created the climate - cold, wet and windy. The occasional bird call added authenticity. Macquarie Island, managed by the Tasmanian Government Parks and Wildlife Service, was inscribed on the World heritage list in 1997 on the basis of its “outstanding natural universal values”. For most people, a visit to the Plant House will be their only opportunity to experience the subantarctica fl ora of “under, down under”. Hazel King, who was pleased to be there, says it’s a must to add to your list when visiting Hobart.Business resumed at our regular club meeting on 17 February, with the Guest Speaker, Suzanne Kingsford, speaking about landscaping with easy care roses. Volunteer gardening groups are back at work and planning for the 2015 Camellia Show and Garden Festival is well advanced.

Janice Hughes, the Guest Speaker at our March meeting will address a very different topic, “Keeping chooks in the country”. Janice is a B&DGC member but also wears a second hat as a chook breeder of some 20 years. Past President of the Nowra Poultry Club, Show Manager of its Annual Poultry Show for 17 years, and occasional judge, there is little Janice doesn’t know about chooks. The March meeting will be held in St Luke’s Church Hall in Princess Street on Tuesday 17 commencing at 7.30pm. New members and visitors are always welcome at our meetings and also to our website.

On Saturday 31st January the Berry Amnesty Group hosted a public forum about the state of children detained in the offshore processing centre in Nauru. The Uniting Church hall was full as nearly 90 people came out to learn about the consequences of the Federal Government’s policy on Asylum Seekers in Australia. The key speaker on the day was Mark Isaacs, author of “the Undesirables: Inside Nauru”. Mark spent 8 months in Nauru working for the Salvation Army as part of their support and humanitarian team. Mark spoke about the friendships he made with the men detained at the centre and the increasingly diffi cult situation he found himself in as he watched these men lose their sense of hope and control over their lives. Australia’s current policy means that those people found to be refugees will never be allowed to settle in Australia, their only option to settle in PNG or Nauru or to return to the place that they have escaped from.Alongside Mark on the panel was Madeline Gleeson, representing the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law at UNSW, Dianne Hiles founding member of ChilOut, Bede Carmody from Amnesty International Australia, and Rob McMurdo a local psychiatrist who advises on the treatment of refugees held in detention. Local resident and Health Development practitioner Bill Piggott was the moderator for the panel. The forum was held to coincide with the 25th anniversary year of Australia’s ratifi cation of the UN convention on the Rights of the Child. As a lawyer Madeline ‘s message was the importance of protecting the legal rights

Nauru’s Forgotten ChildrenNauru’s Forgotten ChildrenBERRY AMNESTY GROUPBERRY AMNESTY GROUP

of people seeking refuge in Australia, particularly as those rights have been so eroded in recent changes to domestic Immigration legislation. Madeline and her co panellists unanimously agreed that detention, onshore or offshore is no place for children. Rob McMurdo and Dianne Hiles spoke of the long-term psychological damage that sustained trauma has on children and the increasing body of evidence that demonstrates that children exposed to these levels of disconnection and trauma may never recover. The number of children in detention as at 31st December 2014 is substantial. 135 children are detained in Nauru; 420 children are currently held in detention facilities in Australia; 1,556 children detained in the community under residence determination and 2,205 children living in the community on bridging visas meaning their parents generally have no work rights and very limited access to any government support.Dianne Hiles from ChilOut spoke of the enormous cost to Australian taxpayers in maintaining the current policy arrangements regarding people in detention. Her organisation has been monitoring this cost since announcements in 2012 to re establish offshore processing centres. The cost of $18 per second has now reached a colossal

fi nancial burden, and still we continue to detain children and their families as a deterrent to others who may seek refuge in this country. There were high levels of participation by members of the audience, with many questions and concerns raised about the state of our policy and practices regarding asylum seekers.

The Amnesty Berry Local Action Group of volunteers and activists from Berry and neighbouring localities concerned about refugee and asylum seeker issues meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 5.30-6.30pm at St Luke’s Anglican Church, 68A Princess Street, Berry.

During the past month, the Rotary Club of Berry celebrated a joint 90 years of service by two members.Dr Artis Medenis, OAM passed the 50 year mark as a Rotarian. During this time, he has been the local veterinarian to the Illawarra and Shoalhaven dairy and cattle industry, an active participant in both community politics and church life, and a very proud supporter of Rotary. His most recent act has been to endow the “Artis Medenis Rural Youth Scholarship” due to begin awards in June, 2015.Col Hanbridge celebrated his 40th anniversary of joining Rotary. During his history, Col has made 13 overseas aid trips with Rotary, established scholarships for 150 children in Nepal, and has been one of the driving forces in the creation of the Berry Celtic Festival, which in turn contributed over $130,000 to the Shoalhaven Cancer Care Centre appeal. Celebrations included many old friends and much singing and storytelling. Rotary District Governor Rowley Tompsett presented a plaque to Artis acknowledging his contributions. Local Member Gareth Ward presented Col with an award for Outstanding Community Service, and has whispered that a similar award for Artis is working its way through the system.Congratulations to two champions and outstanding mentors.
