The Kindergarten Language Program provides

intensive oral language programming to groups of students in Senior Kindergarten who have

significant difficulties in language and/or speech development. The program is preventative, with the focus on the enhancement of the young student’s oral language development as the foundation for

learning, literacy and social development.

Overview

Students enrolled in the Kindergarten Language Program attend their home school senior kindergarten program half days. They also attend the Kindergarten Language Program two additional half days per week. The Kindergarten Language Program is co-instructed by a teacher and speech-language pathologist. Consultation and support are provided to parents and teachers as needed.

Admission

Students with significant language and/or speech delays are referred at the end of their Junior Kindergarten year by their teacher. Students referred are discussed and then screened by the speech-language pathologist or Kindergarten Language Program teacher. With the consent of parents and teachers, the Kindergarten Language Admissions Committee then selects the 32 students with the greatest speech and language needs to attend the program. Students also receive a complete speech and language assessment at the beginning and end of the program.

Program The Kindergarten Language Program offers a balanced program of oral language, literacy and social experiences in small and large group settings. Speech and language goals for students are incorporated into theme-based activities to facilitate oral communication and literacy development. Organization There are 8 locations for the Kindergarten Language Program. Four groups of eight students attend the program two half days per week for a total of 32 students at each location. Children are transported to the program if needed.

Children attend the Kindergarten Language Program during their senior kindergarten year. Most students attend the program for the whole school year, although, if appropriate, a few children may leave after one or two terms.
