The Tabernacle Candle "In accordance with traditional custom, near the tabernacle a special lamp, fueled by oil

or wax, should be kept alight to indicate and honor the presence of Christ." (General Instruction of the Roman Missal 316) If

you would like to make a donation in honor or in memory of a loved one, please call the

Parish Office. The donation is $10. The candle offering is for one week.

“Do Not Be Afraid.”

Who would count every single hair on our heads? God, who knows us better than we know ourselves. And loves us, too Though we may be afraid of some things in life, afraid of the shape of the world, even afraid of some persons, we need never fear God—who is with us like a mighty champion..

† Of what and of whom am I afraid? † How will I trust that divine power is superior to earthly

power? † How can I , like God, tend to at least one who is poorer

than me?

Our Mission

We, the family of St. Scholastica Catholic Parish, are dedicated Christian stewards of God’s gifts. We have been called in Baptism and through the Holy Spirit to be disciples of Jesus. We are a sacramental community,

sharing a sense of welcoming and belonging. We provide opportunities for spiritual growth and faith

formation. We are committed in both prayer and action to support and nurture each other and those in need.

Welcome

Gradual Re-Opening of St. Scholastica Parish Office

The Parish is working on developing a phased re-opening of the Parish Office. We have truly appreciated your patience.

Starting June 15th

We will slowly begin to have modified office hours Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 9 am to 1 pm, by appointment only. In keeping with the current guidelines provided by the diocese, we ask that any questions or request that can be handled by phone or email continue to be handled in that manner. Thank you for continuing to use the white drop box at entrance to the parish center.

All visitors must wear a mask or face covering over their nose and mouth, and maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from others.

There will be markers on the floor identifying a six foot distance.

Visitors will check in with Rita or Lisa, who will let the staff member or priest know that their guest has arrived.

As a gentle reminder please do not come to your appointment if you are not feeling well.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we do our best to keep everyone safe.

Thank you.

What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the

housetops. [Ma : 10:27] Well today is a good me to

proclaim some good news from the housetops. As many

of you recall last week we began celebra ng mass in

church. Granted that we are using the daily chapel/cry

room for reconcilia on because of the requirement of

the need for a more air filled space. Definitely when you

enter the church everything is a bit different beginning

with the required sign‐in. The only reason for the sign‐in

is to keep track of who was present at a given mass just

in case anyone should come down with the famous Covid

19 virus. This enables us to check on all who were

present at the same celebra on and make the necessary

health no fica ons. Right now it is a safety requirement.

Addi onally, the members of the prepara on group

instructed volunteers as greeters, ushers, and cleaners

a er each mass. This is definitely a different pa ern for

a good number of us were brought up in at a different

me, but it is a new era which has its own challenges.

Deep down I wish to express my gra tude to the

members of our leadership team, and the volunteers

who are assis ng at each of the masses. It is good to see

real people in church again. On Sunday’s over the three

month period I did celebrate mass at the main altar in

church, but during the week I used the daily chapel;

however, the chapel/cry room won’t be available for

some me since we need to observe the social spacing

between individuals as well as distancing the penitent

from the confessor. Every once in a while my mind

wanders back into my childhood days‐‐‐way back when.

Somewhere in my memory I recall two characters from a

first grade reader: Dick and Jane. I bet some of you

recall the words, “See Dick, see Jane…” They did many

things and performed great number of ac vi es in

addi on to keeping a student’s interest in paying

a en on to learn how to read. It’s not Dick and Jane,

but it is Jim and Jane [Gorecki] whom I would like to

thank. Last Saturday was a very pleasant day and the

Gorecki’s spent a tremendous amount of energy as well

as the en re day weeding and cleaning the garden

between the school building and the office complex. I

offer them a great THANK YOU for caring for this area of

the parish property. Also, Friday June 12th St. Scholas ca

students were able to perform the musical for which

they had been preparing. As we all recall physical

a endance in the classroom became learning via

computer and became the norm. All other school and

parish related ac vi es were cancelled. I am grateful

that all the students who were rehearsing for some me

and the adults who were direc ng these students had

the opportunity to present the musical in the parking lot

on the evening of June 12th. Here too many

enthusias cally shared their energy and talent to assist

the students accomplish this presenta on. And I am

thankful to all the parishioners who have maintained

their contribu ons to the parish. Although many

ac vi es changed or were cancelled somehow bills don’t

disappear. One more item is necessary: HAPPY FATHERS’

DAY to all the dads in our parish. I pray that as this

summer unfolds that the Lord will con nue to bless and

keep you and all your family members safe and healthy.

My Jesus,

I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen

On July 1, we will welcome Reverend

Edward J. Howe, C.R. to our Parish Family

A er a ending Our Lady of Victory grammar school and Gordon Tech H.S in Chicago, Fr. Ed Howe entered the Congrega on of the Resurrec on in 1982, a Catholic religious community of priests and brothers. He professed first vows as a Brother on August 15, 1986 and then completed graduate work in Theology and Social Work.

From 1988 to 1991 Bro. Ed was assigned to St. Hedwig Catholic Church, located in the inner‐city Chicago neighborhood of Buck Town where he worked with young people, senior ci zens and the homeless. During part of this me he served as Execu ve Director of the Near Northwest Neighborhood Network.

In 1989 a er a parishioner, on his way to Sunday mass with his family, was hit by a stray bullet from a gang fight, Bro. Ed brought Buck Town residents together to protest an area drug house and gang opera on. A grassroots movement called "Drug Free Buck Town" emerged that succeeded in closing down 22 area drug houses over several years. The effort gained local and na onal media a en on. In 1990 the effort received the Chicago Council on Urban Affairs “Community Organiza on Award” and was chronicled into the film "Takin' Back Buck Town" which received the 1990 Interna onal Television Associa on "Philo" Award.

From 1991 to 1992 he was assigned to Weber High School where he served as a counselor, religion teacher, student ac vi es coordinator and soccer coach. the late Bishop Edwin Conway and selected by the Religious Brothers Conference of Illinois as “Brother of the Year.” He received an Honorary Resolu on from the Mayor and City Council of Chicago for his service to the ci zens of Chicago.

From 2003 to 2005, Brother Ed served the Archdiocese of Chicago Department of Communica ons, Radio & Television Office. His responsibili es included offering technical support for Cardinal Francis George’s press conferences, daily Catholic Community of Faith radio show, programming the Archdiocese Instruc onal Television service and the television programs Sanctuary (airing on ABC 7) and The Church The Cardinal & You. One of the highlights of this ministry was involvement in the produc on of a documentary about Pope John Paul II and the elec on of Pope Benedict XVI that aired on ABC 7 in April of 2005.

In the year 2005, he was appointed as President and CEO of Gordon Tech HS where he served un l 2008. He was invited to deliver an Invoca on before Mayor Richard M. Daley and the Chicago City Council members on March 12, 2008.

I pray that you and your loved ones are healthy. As you may have seen, Bishop Richard Pates, recently shared our mul ‐phased plan for reopening churches in the Diocese of Joliet.

• Phase I allows for parishes to reopen for Bap sm, Reconcilia on, Weddings and Funerals with a limit of TEN a endees.

• Phase IA allows for parishes to reopen for private prayer and adora on with a limit of TEN a endees.

• Phase II allows for reopening for weekday and weekend Masses for larger groups depending on the guidelines which will be issued by the State of Illinois at a later date, and the capacity of the church building

Our Parish Reopening Plan First and foremost, it is important for everyone to

understand that our efforts are to priori ze the safety and wellbeing of all while maintaining due respect and reverence for the sacraments and liturgical norms of our faith.

I have assembled a Parish Reopening Leadership Team and we have already met. We have begun the required training from the Diocese to ensure that our parish reopening plan conforms to the guidelines developed by the Diocese in collabora on with civil and healthcare authori es. We have ordered the necessary cleaning supplies through the Diocese.

Volunteers Needed We will need volunteers to assist with various aspects of

our parish reopening plan. Importantly, these volunteers must not be part of a “vulnerable popula on” (with no underlying medical condi on such as diabetes; lung disease; undergoing cancer treatment, etc.) Those over the age of 60 should consult with the Parish Leadership Team about possibly serving as a volunteer. I ask all of you who are younger than 60 and healthy with no underlying health condi ons to consider assis ng us. I especially encourage high school, college students as well as young adults serve and volunteer for teams. Look for informa on regarding team responsibili es on the parish web page.

A Prayer for Healing Loving God, turn your ear to the cries of your sons and daughters who seek healing. Ease our troubled hearts. Mend our broken spirits. Be ever present in our distress.

Merciful Lord, send your Healing Spirit to our brothers and sisters who have endured pain and abuse physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Comfort their weary spirits. Soothe their pain.

May our eyes be opened to see your image in these wounded members of Your people. Give us all courage to act and speak up on behalf of the most vulnerable. Pour forth Your healing Spirit to renew our trust and hope in You, who are our refuge and our strength.

We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
