Not Orphaned!
Because the risen Lord and the Spirit of Truth are always with us, we are not abandoned. Because we are not abandoned, we must exhibit both love and obedience. Saint Peter proclaims in the Second Reading, “Always be ready to give an explanation...for the reason of your hope.” Act accordingly.
† How will my every action proclaim Christ’s presence in my life and in the life of the world?
† How can I advocate, aid another’s need this week? † Whom will I love, how will I love as Jesus Christ loves
me?
Our Mission
We, the family of St. Scholastica Catholic Parish, are dedicated Christian stewards of God’s gifts. We have been called in Baptism and through the Holy Spirit to be disciples of Jesus. We are a sacramental community,
sharing a sense of welcoming and belonging. We provide opportunities for spiritual growth and faith
formation. We are committed in both prayer and action to support and nurture each other and those in need.

A Continued Call to
Can you be here for your parish….
If you are able, please continue your generous support by dropping off or sending in your weekly donation. You can also support your parish online by following the guidelines below.
We are still here for you….
It is very difficult for your parish staff not be allowed to staff the parish office, but we will continue to be here for you. Please call if you are in need, in any way. We have a list of generous parishioners who have offered to shop or run errands.
On behalf of the staff and parishioners of St. Scholastica Parish, welcome! Although we are a large, diverse faith community, we strive to always cherish
and value the gifts of each parishioner. We invite you to find a place in our parish that nurtures and serves
you in your faith development.
Did you ever have a great idea, but when you shared it with others no one really accepted your idea as being that great? I must admit that this happens to me on occasion. And I will also admit that I am the one who tells myself that what I wanted to do was not such a great idea. Now that I have your a en on I will tell you a story. I thought that I had a wonderful idea to use for this week’s “wanderings” from me, but somehow it evaporated from my mind over night. I knew that I read an interes ng quote from Pope Francis in an ar cle which was wri en by Fr. Antonio Spadaro, S.J. who is editor in chief of the journal La Civiltà Ca olica. But when I woke up the following morning I could not locate the quote nor even recall exactly where I read it. Of course the bo om line is that I have changed my idea about what I would write for the 6th Sunday of Easter. Over the days a er Easter a fair amount of the gospel passages used during the week have been taken from the Gospel of John. Especially during the recent two weeks the 14th chapter of John’s gospel was predominant because in this chapter we read that Jesus is preparing His disciples for a me when He will not be with them. The se ng in this passage for today is before Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion, and definitely before His resurrec on. Among many scripture scholars this sec on is referred to as part of Jesus’ Farewell Discourse. The se ng is immediately a er the conclusion of the Last Supper and Jesus is trying to prepare His disciples for His departure and that they would eventually con nue His ministry and follow Him. At first they are baffled and say that they do not know exactly where He is going or the way, but Jesus reminds them that He is the way they are to follow. Furthermore Jesus adds an addi onal piece of informa on in the promises He makes to His disciples: an advocate will come and help them. Jesus states that a er He has departed that the Father… will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him, because he remains with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans… [John 14: 15‐16] A popular interpreta on is that an advocate is one who works on your behalf like an insurance agent who tries to obtain the maximum benefits to be paid for whatever procedure that you have had, or a health advocate who makes sure that you
receive the proper medical care that you need. If you stop to think about it an advocate is also someone who encourages you to keep going even if you feel that it might be fu le because you lack the energy or will to persist in what you have begun. Expressions like, “You’re doing great,” or “Come on, you can do it, keep up the effort.” In a way this is part of the message that we read today from the First Le er of Peter. He offers his readers words of encouragement… Always be ready to give an explana on to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your conscience clear… On this 6th Sunday of Easter we hear in our gospel passage as well as in the First Le er of Peter, that we are not alone. The Advocate is the Holy Spirit who will and does guide us in our life’s journey. Recall in our first scripture passage for today from the Acts of the Apostles: … Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, who went down and prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit… Also we have been moving forward since Easter Sunday to recall the Pentecost event. We want the Holy Spirit to come and guide us. This year Pentecost is also the date that the Catholic dioceses are looking at as a
me to reopen our church buildings and resume the public celebra on of mass together. I hope that this will happen, but from the me I write this ar cle un l Pentecost Sunday many things may happen because of Covid‐19. But if we are able to open the church doors again on Pentecost Sunday no one will say, “Just run in and have a seat!” No, it will have to be in a more orderly and controlled fashion while s ll maintaining a physical distance from others un l we all could be certain that it is safe to gather together again. The details are s ll being worked out and I hope that we can be together again soon to share in the Eucharist. It is in this Easter Season that we read in the scripture passages of how the early church grew because the Holy Spirit brought these people together. We need also to pray that the Holy Spirit brings us together again. May you and your families have a blessed and healthy week.

Spiritual Communion
In this me of uncertainty, when we are unable to leave our homes to a end Mass, we are encouraged to make and act of “spiritual communion,” where we unite ourselves to God through prayer. It is a beau ful way to express to God our desire to be united with him when we are unable to complete that union in the recep on of Holy Communion.
Countless saints incorporated this type of prayer into their daily lives, not being sa sfied with receiving Jesus in the Eucharist once a week or even once a day. Making an act of spiritual communion for them was an essen al part of life and drew them closer to God on a daily basis.
St. Josemaria Escriva encouraged everyone to make a spiritual communion as o en as they could, “What a source of grace there is in spiritual communion! Prac ce it frequently and you’ll have greater presence of God and closer union with him in all your ac ons.”
Padre Pio also had a habit of making a spiritual communion throughout the day outside of the celebra on of Mass. He desired to be always united with Jesus Christ in everything he did.
Below is a tradi onal prayer of spiritual communion that many saints have prayer over the years. It can be prayed if you find yourself at Mass unable to receive the Eucharist, or even in the midst of your daily work, li ing up your thoughts to God.
The ul mate goal of our lives should be communion with God and an act of spiritual communion can help a person draw closer to that goal.
My Jesus,
I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen

Let Rita know so she can update the information in our parish census program:
“Hannah” confirmed she is considering abortion with her husband supporting her decision. She was struggling with the idea of ending this pregnancy and so had not told anyone about it other than her husband. During the ultrasound Hannah did not show much expression other than her slightly teary eyes that gave away her inner turmoil.
Hannah did agree to return for a repeat ultrasound, agreeing it would be good to confirm continued viability. During the repeat ultrasound appointment, the baby was very active and she heard the heartbeat. Hannah said her expected due date is only one day off from her Grandma’s birthday and that would make her Grandma happy. This was our first indication that Hannah and her husband are starting to adjust to the idea of having a new baby in their family.
Directly following her appointment, Hannah met with our Aspire Resource department for an assessment so they could help her address her financial hardships. The Resource Specialist is happy to report that Hannah is feeling positive about her pregnancy at this time. She plans to tell her children this weekend as she will have completed her first trimester. Hannah’s relationship with Aspire will continue as she moves forward with OB care for her pregnancy. Waterleaf provided her much needed support and information at a very vulnerable time.

PRAYER TO OUR LADY, HEALTH OF THE SICK DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of
salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the Cross, united with Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman people, know what we need, and we trust that you will provide for those needs so
that, as at Cana of Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this moment of trial.
Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. He who took our suffering upon Himself, and burdened Himself with our sorrows to bring us,
through the Cross, to the joy of Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas—we who are put to the test
—and deliver us from every danger. O glorious and blessed Virgin.
