With Spring now on the way, start with the lawn it’s good to spike it eve-ry so often to help it along, especially with all the rain we get, as spiking helps get the water away more quick-ly. By spiking I mean reducing compac-tion in the soil using long metal spikes you can strap them on your shoes, or you can buy a special lawn spike. A simple one has up to 10 spikes on it and it’s like a spade. You stand on it and it goes into the ground, penetrat-ing the top few inches of the soil to help with aeration and let the water drain away. There are also rotary models you can push along, and even heavy-duty variants for pulling behind a ride-on lawnmower. A garden fork works just as well, but it takes a fair while if your garden is of a reasonable size. Around the end of January you can put some lime onto the lawn. The lime serves to stress the moss, and then you can apply moss killer. You put moss killer on soon after the lime and it keeps moss away for most of the year. Lime helps to raise the pH in the soil. If you bring up the pH, it helps in stressing the moss because moss loves low pH or peaty and acidic soils. Some artificial fertilisers also reduce the pH in the soil, and this acidity creates excellent conditions for the growth of moss, which you don’t want. If gardeners have not started to prune their hedges they should start from February onward if they want to create the perfect garden design. For the new flower-beds gardeners should start digging over the soil and mixing in some manure, for older flower-beds gardeners should mix in some chicken manure around it which is available in pellet form. When the growth then comes in a month or so the garden will be ready to kick off, and you can start planning your garden design. Some people think that you need to live in the countryside in order to use these products but both are readily available in garden centers. For those who want colour in the flowerbeds and borders, now is a good time to plant primroses, or you could buy grown daffodils or Tête-á-Tête. If you have a vegetable patch in your garden, now is a good time to dig it over and dig in the farmyard manure and compost. If you do it now the veg-etable patch will have time to break it down before the spring hits. For the garden roses now is the time to feed them to ensure that they reach their full potential later in the year. There is a special type of plant food availa-ble for them that ensures they have

all the nutrients they need to reach their full potential. If you haven’t pruned them yet, I would still hold off and wait until the first week in March. This is just in case we get a late frost that could damage the rose. It is very unusual for this time of year, but at the moment some weeds are appearing in gardens. The reason is the very mild weather has encour-aged growth. It is a good idea to dig them out or spray them with weed killer. If your garden did not live up to your expectations last year then now would be a good time to do a soil test to find out what was missing and how to compensate for it. Some gardens may need magnesium, calcium or per-haps lime to compensate for deficien-cies in the soil. The test kits are easy to use and you can tell by what colour it turns what exactly your garden needs to ensure it reaches its poten-tial this year. Now is the best time to do the test because you have time to fix any problems that exist. Now is also a good time to seek advice and start planning if you have a large garden project that you intend to complete this year. Over the next few months there will be more products, and plants that will become available to fill your new garden.

Sometimes it’s a good idea to plant in sec-tions so that differ-ent flowers are ma-ture at different stages giving a wide variety to the garden.

The lawn mower is the most essential gardening tool. Although not many people know it, these also need a ser-vice and Spring is the perfect time to do it. Spark plugs, oil, and sharpening the blades is usually all that is need-ed. This winter has been unusually mild and this is causing unseasonal growth. Once there is over 6 degrees Celsius temperature in the ground plants of all sorts will start to grow. Many garden enthusiasts took special notice of the birds in their gardens last year because the winter was so cold. This allowed them to explore the full range of bird foods, and see what type of birds it would attract into the garden. In Ireland, the tradition has always been to feed the birds nuts, however, nuts only attract certain types of bird and it can be more ex-pensive. For example, meal worms at-tract the robins, meal/fruit mix at-tracts the song birds, and niger and thistle attract the finch. Ref: - Ashbrook Garden Centre
