GREAT TASK, ACCOMPLISHED!T e a m S h i v n e r i S t u d e n t s

We Encourage our students to exercise their creativity by starting a

newsletter. While it seems like a daunting project, a student-made

newsletter will give our kids firsthand experience in writing,

research, planning, management, and design.

Though each & every student wants to have his/her contribution to

this publication of the school, we keep challenging them and best is

chosen for the newsletter. Paintings, poems, articles, etc. make it to

the newsletter so as to prepare a masterpiece portfolio of the

school.

CREATING AN EQUILIBRIUM

Equilibrium. some of the students wouldn't be knowing the

meaning of this strenuous word, some might not be able to

pronounce it, but that's our daily job here at the school.

Teachers and administrators work on this little word every

moment.

Let me explain. Here at Shivneri School, Students have come

from different backgrounds, different cultures, different

languages, and many more other differences. If you try to

group these students based on their similarities, you will fail

miserably. So creating an environment suitable for such a

heterogeneous group is a back-breaking task. All the teachers

and administrators at the schools work really hard to achieve

this difficult goal. But the task is not just to make students

comfortable, the main game is to teach them discipline and

make them succeed in their own goals while adhering to their

comfort.  Hence, creating an Equilibrium where all the

students are comfortable and learning discipline and skills for

their goals is, I believe, ultimately the role of the school.

GOLDEN WORDS

1. Shake off Your Problems

D E V E L O P M E N T

“FAILURE IS THE OPPORTUNITY TO BEGIN AGAIN MORE INTELLIGENTLY.”

– HENRY FORD

A man’s favorite donkey falls into a deep precipice. He can’t pull it

out no matter how hard he tries. He therefore decides to bury it

alive.

Soil is poured onto the donkey from above. The donkey feels the

load, shakes it off, and steps on it. More soil is poured.

It shakes it off and steps up. The more the load was poured, the

higher it rose. By noon, the donkey was grazing in green pastures.

After much shaking off (of problems) And stepping up (learning

from them), One will graze in GREEN PASTURES.

As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused

by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a

small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was

obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their

bonds but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood

there and made no attempt to get away. “Well,” trainer said, “when

they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to

tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up,

they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They

believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break

free.”

The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free

from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they

were stuck right where they were.

Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a

belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it

once before?

Failure is part of learning; we should never give up the struggle in

life.

MATHEMATICS

1. Adding large numbers

A C A D E M I C

Adding large numbers just in your head can be difficult. This method

shows how to simplify this process by making all the numbers a

multiple of 10. Here is an example:

644 + 238

While these numbers are hard to contend with, rounding them up will

make them more manageable. So, 644 becomes 650 and 238 becomes

240.

Now, add 650 and 240 together. The total is 890. To find the answer to

the original equation, it must be determined how much we added to the

numbers to round them up.

650 – 644 = 6 and 240 – 238 = 2

Now, add 6 and 2 together for a total of 8

To find the answer to the original equation, 8 must be subtracted from

the 890.

890 – 8 = 882

So the answer to 644 +238 is 882.

Here’s a basic rule to subtract a large number from 1,000: Subtract

every number except the last from 9 and subtract the final number

from 10

For example:

1,000 – 556

Step 1: Subtract 5 from 9 = 4

Step 2: Subtract 5 from 9 = 4

Step 3: Subtract 6 from 10 = 4

The answer is 444.

2. Subtracting from 1,000

04

When multiplying the number 5 by an even number, there is a quick way to find the

answer.

For example, 5 x 4 =

Step 1: Take the number being multiplied by 5 and cut it in half, this makes the

number 4 become the number 2.

Step 2: Add a zero to the number to find the answer. In this case, the answer is 20.

5 x 4 = 20

When multiplying an odd number times 5, the formula is a bit different.

For instance, consider 5 x 3.

Step 1: Subtract one from the number being multiplied by 5, in this instance the

number 3 becomes the number 2.

Step 2: Now halve the number 2, which makes it the number 1. Make 5 the last digit.

The number produced is 15, which is the answer.

5 x 3 = 15
