I dont mean host a huge surprise party or anything on that scale, but rather a small ges- ture that totally transformed a moment in your life? Perhaps it was a kind smile when you needed it most, or a time when you felt invisible and unnoticed, and someone spoke to you and looked directly in your eyes making you feel visible again. Those are moments of grace. There are unmistakable moments of grace all around us if we would only be open to seeing them. And, there are plenty of ways for us to spread it around as well. Dear Beloved:

When I was in seminary, I finally learned what the meaning of grace was. It seemed such a difficult concept for me to grasp for most of my life because so much of what I learned about God seemed to contradict the meaning of God’s grace. Then I got it. I was in class one day and I heard my professor say, “Thank God, God doesn’t give us what we deserve. God does not punish us. That is God’s mercy. God is a God of sec-ond, third, fourth, fifth, and on and on and on, chances. God pours out grace upon grace. All the time.” Wow. It was a significant moment in my life of faith. It com-pletely changed my relationship with God. I came across a quote a few years ago that really brought the concept of grace home. This is the quote:

“You are so much more than the worst thing you have ever done.” – Father Greg Boyle

Let that sink in for a bit. Think about the worst thing you have ever done in your life. Do you believe God has forgiven you for it? Is it something you cannot let go of or forgive yourself for? I promise you, because of God’s grace and mercy you were, and have been, forgiven for it. And, I believe with all my heart that God wants you to for-give yourself. God has already forgotten about it. That is how much God loves you! I know, it’s difficult to comprehend, isn’t it? We live in a world where grace is in short supply. As Christians, we are to bestow up-on others the grace that God bestows upon us. It is challenging, yes? However, I think if we look at each human being we encounter as beloved by God as much as you or I are, it is a beginning point. But before we do that, we have to believe deep within our hearts and souls (for ourselves) that God is passionately in love with us, before we can love others in that same way. We can begin in small ways. Have you ever had someone do something surprisingly kind or unexpected for you? I don’t mean host a huge surprise party or anything on that scale, but rather a small ges-ture that totally transformed a moment in your life? Come and enjoy this wonderful time to-gether.

Another concern our council is facing per-tains to the status of our General Fund. Think again of our 3 Ps. Summer months are a time for relaxing, taking it easy; but, unfortunately, our bills still need to be paid. Please keep up with your pledges at this time so we can carry on with the work of this Church. Our Ministry Teams are also working hard setting up their activities. Read their arti-cles to catch up on the events. The teams are always in need of help. Give it a try - visit one of the team meetings. Some of the Ministry Team activities - fill in your calendars:

POSITIVE - PATIENCE - PRAYER

With LOVE, Marylou Pulliam, Moderator

THANK YOU ! THANK YOU ! It seems these two little words have been in my vocab-ulary a lot these few months. To me they are very powerful. Thank you for your prayers, thoughts, concerns, cards, phone calls, visits, food, and e-mails these few months. I am getting stronger, but very slowly.

Also coming to mind are the other words that I brought up in the beginning of the year (the “3 Ps”): POSITIVE - PATIENCE - PRAYER. We need these words every day, for our fami-lies, our friends, the work of our church, and for one another. Perhaps we all could consid-er using them as a focus for our own daily lives. They were my constant companions these past few months.

40th Anniversary Celebration: What is that all about? The Spring Hill United Church of Christ has been prominent in all that it has done to reach out to so very many people in this community and around the world - for 40 years! This is a very special time. We have been here praying, praising, working and lov-ing from 1978 to this moment, and it is im-portant to celebrate! As we prepare for this event, keep the date open for sharing this time together. As noted in a separate article, we are asking if you have any photos of any special events (put dates, names, & events on the back of the picture), or any special memories of events (jot them down so we can use them in a slide presentation). Please send your memories to: Marty Hodgkins: [email protected] Sherrie Raymond: [email protected] Marty Daly: [email protected]

Photos and written memories may be left in the 40th Anniversary Box in the church office.

There are times when things are not going well for each of us. Perhaps we ourselves are sick; perhaps there are loved ones who are sick or hurting. Maybe there is a family emergency or crisis. During these times you don't need to be alone. Our Pastor and Diaconate would be very happy to come and visit with you. Before you reach a place where you feel alone and that no one cares, please call the Church Office or the

Pastor and let them know that you are in need of a visit. The message will be passed along quietly to the Pastor and a time for a personal visit can be arranged. Others of us tend to prefer to weather these times quietly and by ourselves; if that is you, please be aware that there is a Prayer Ministry team that is willing to intercede and pray for you. You can access the Prayer Ministry through the Church Office, or by calling Jan Thayer, Prayer Chain coordinator. Most importantly, remember that you have a church family that is willing to walk along side of you at all times. Also, please know that you don't need to be a Pastor or a member of the Diaco-nate for your Siblings in Christ. You can visit our homebound members. If you enjoy getting to know new people and would like to spend some time with members of our SHUCC family that can no longer make it to church on a Sunday morning, please call the Church office or simply put a note in the offering plate and someone will contact you. Thank you for taking the time to spend a few minutes sharing the love of Jesus with our members who can no longer come to church!

Do you knit or crochet? If so, our prayer

shawl ministry could use your help. Looking back through Diaconate Minutes, I found this description written by Marty Kosztyo in March 2012: “A dedicated group of deacons is committed to our prayer shawl ministry, which involves delivering a hand knitted or crocheted shawl [or lap robe] to parishioners who are experiencing difficult situations. People of the church create the shawls, and with each stitch a prayer for the recipient is offered. Our ministry would not be possible without them. Thank you! This warm and caring outreach is deeply moving to both the deacons presenting the shawl and those who receive it. Since its beginning, in May 2010, there have been 43 prayer shawls given.” A little over 8 years later, we have now pre-sented a total of 143 shawls! Marty was certainly correct about how meaningful the

Page 4 OUTLOOK

shawls are, and we want this ministry to continue. If you don’t knit or crochet, there is another way you can help. Do you have yarn you haven’t gotten around to using? Drop it off at the church office. Or would you be able to contribute $5 toward the purchase of yarn? Please put it in an envelope and leave it in the Diaconate box in the office. One of us will purchase yarn to be used by anyone willing to make a shawl. Bettie Kluesner has been crocheting shawls for many years and has some books on the subject, including directions. She would be happy to share the information. At any time, if you know of someone in our midst who should be receiving a prayer shawl, please contact Pastor Robin. Many thanks!

(continued from “Pastor’s Pen” on page 1) If you need grace and mercy for yourself, pray. It is given without question. If someone else needs grace and mercy from you, please extend it. Grace is medicine for our souls. It is healing. It is life giving. Grace. Mercy. Pass them on.

However, God is rich in mercy. He brought us to life with Christ while we were dead as a result of

those things that we did wrong. He did this because of the great love that he has for us. You are saved

by God’s grace! – Ephesians 2: 4-5

Grace, mercy and peace to you. Remember, God loves you and so do I.

As I write this, our hot, humid, and rainy summer season is still in full

swing! The kids are back in school after a long summer vacation. Alt-hough the team is remaining in vacation mode for the month of Septem-ber, our Mission schedule is slowly turning toward our busy autumn ac-tivities. I hope you have all enjoyed a wonderful summer. Annabelle Gibson and I attended a Habitat for Humanity House dedica-

tion for a family with eight children on July 26th. We presented them with $150 in Walmart gift cards, and they were most appreciative of our generosity. In a previous article, I had mentioned about our $300 donation to the 3rd Annual Superintendent’s Sum-mer Reading Challenge. I am happy to announce that 392 students completed the challenge and read for approximately 10,116 hours! Various prizes were given to the children at different times over the summer. Our generosity helped to make this program a success. I would like to give a VERY BIG THANK YOU to all of you who so generously and consistently do-nate food for the needy – especially for the summer months when our attendance is down due to the snowbirds being gone and people being on vacation. YOU ARE THE BEST! The HeartF.E.L.T. backpack deliveries for homeless children and their siblings will be starting soon. This program gives a backpack full of nourishing weekend food to hungry children who otherwise may have little to no food to eat on weekends. Would you consider helping us deliver these backpacks? Please see a separate article elsewhere in this Outlook. Thank you for continuing to purchase gift cards which help our Community Service program. A food collection for the People Helping People backpack program will be on Sunday, September 16, and Sunday, September 23. Please see the separate food suggestion list elsewhere in this Outlook and in your Sunday bulletin on September 2. I would like to share with you how Dick and I saw God this summer. We visited the small town of Wiseman, Alaska (population 11) which lies above the Arctic Circle. Everyone lives off the grid by choice. That means there is no electric power, and they grow and preserve their own food as well as hunt and gather. They have solar power in the summer and a generator for power in the winter. Our personal guide for the day, Jamie, lives there and took us through the village and to her small cabin where we ate our bag lunch and visited with both her and her soon-to-be husband, Jim. What an experi-ence and treat! We shared so much in that short time together. Earlier, when we had entered the town, I noticed a makeshift wooden sign on a tree that said “Community Church Service – Sunday, 10 A.M. All Welcome.” Of course, we wanted to see this church. It was a tiny cabin that held about a dozen chairs around the room. Pictures and books as well as other mementos pertaining to the church and town life were scattered around the room. There was a table with a beautiful handmade white crocheted tablecloth on it that served as the altar. Jim’s mother was an ordained minister who served the church and lived in the town. She has since passed on and is buried near the church. She wrote all of her ser-mons in beautiful cursive writing, and they are preserved in a loose-leaf notebook. Each Sunday, Jim reads one of her sermons that is aligns with the Sunday in the liturgical year that she originally wrote it for. Someone else would then fill in with appropriate Bible readings and music. Their services are held each week without fail even if it is snowing or 40 to 60 degrees below zero! We were so impressed and could feel God’s love in that room. What a unique and loving way to bring God into their lives each week!

Enjoy September! Sue Mattson, Mission Team Leader

The Social Justice Team is once again partnering with Spring Hill Elementary School (located at 6001 Mariner Blvd) to offer tutoring and mentoring programs for children in grades kindergarten through grade 5. Below is a description of opportunities that have been identified.

Service + Faith + You: 3 Wishes from Spring Hill Elementary School and SHUCC

Wish 1: Mentor - The goal of this program is to develop a relationship with a child (kindergarten – grade 5) who has been identified by teachers and guidance counselors. You might have lunch together, read a book, or share an activity/game.

Wish 2: Kids Club – Find a friend and facilitate a club for kids. On Wednes-day afternoons from 2:00 pm – 2:45 pm, everyone in the school will participate in an “A to Z Club” (e.g. anything from Aardvarks to Zumba). Design your own club or volunteer to work with an existing club. Imagine! 2 adults = 10 kids = 12 people having fun together.

Wish 3: ABC - Help kindergarten kids “crack the alphabet code.” It’s as simple as ABC! Work with one kindergarten class once a week to help kids with: a) letter recognition, b) letter sounds and c) building words. All volunteers must register thru Hernando County School website: www.hernandoschools.org – click on “Community”, click on “Volunteer”, fill out the information for Level 1 Volunteer.

For more information, please contact Marty Hodgkins at 302-981-6347 or 352-610-4286.

On October 14th of this year we will celebrate the 40th Anni-versary of the Spring Hill United Church of Christ! Pease save the date and plan to attend. Our special day will begin with worship at 10:00 AM in the Sanctuary. Reverend John Verti-gan, Florida Conference Minister, will deliver the morning message. Following the service, we will enjoy a hearty pot luck meal including chicken and vegetable main dishes, salad, and a specially decorated anniversary cake. So that we may better enjoy conversation and fellowship, there will be no for-mal program. However, we are working to prepare displays and other visual presentations of our 40-year history. As we prepare for this event, the committee is hoping to col-lect personal recollections from our members and friends. As you think back on the times that you have spent in worship, work, and fun at SHUCC, perhaps some particularly memora-ble events will come to mind. If so, please jot down a sentence

or two about these especially meaningful moments from past or recent years. Our plan is to intersperse these recollections throughout a slide presentation that depicts our church’s history, from 1978 to the present. If you happen to have photos that depict special events, on the back of each photo please identify the date and the names of the individuals included (if you are able to remember that information). Please send your memories to:

Marty Hodgkins: [email protected] Sherrie Raymond: [email protected] Marty Daly: [email protected]

Photos and written memories may also be left in the 40th Anniversary Box in the church office.

The HeartF.E.L.T. backpack deliveries for homeless children and their siblings will be starting in early September. This program gives a backpack full of nourishing weekend food to hungry children who otherwise may have little to no food to eat on weekends. Empty backpacks are picked up on Thursday from the Spring Hill schools that are involved in this program. On Friday, the backpacks are brought to the HeartF.E.L.T. collection point in Brooksville where they are filled and cars are packed for delivery. They are then returned to the schools. It takes a commitment of approximately 1 hour on Thursday and 2-3 hours early Friday morning. Depending on where you live from the assigned schools, you may have to drive 40 - 60 miles to accomplish this. As of now, we don’t know the number of bags we will be delivering or the schools that will be involved this year. Last year we filled our cars to overflowing! The amount of bags changes from week to week. The Mission Team would like to have at least five groups of two people for this program to be successful. You would deliver on a rotating schedule of approxi-mately every five or more weeks. If you are interested in doing this, please sign up on the sheet which will be on the card table in the narthex or speak to Sue Mattson. We have a faithful group of people who have done this for several years. Our reward is that we have performed a needed service and spread God’s love to those in need. Please consider joining this worthwhile endeavor. Thank you very much.

All our Ministry teams would love to have you join them. Please prayerfully consider where you can help. You do not have to be a member to become a part of a team or group. This is a great way to use the gifts God has given you and meet some great new friends. The team leaders and their phone numbers are listed above. Thank You!

Your church needs you!

An Opportunity for Educational and Spiritual Growth

Beginning in January, the Faith Formation

Team will be sponsoring a learning event for the entire congregation. We will be engaging in a sacred conversation about race. Along with Climate Change, Racial Division contin-ues to be one of the most challenging issues

we face in our current culture. The church, be-cause of the Gospel imperative of Jesus, has the responsibility of beginning the healing process of the earth and racial relations. We

begin with prayer, love and education. More information will be coming. Please consider setting aside some time to join us in the im-portant and sacred time.

Inquirer’s Meeting Are you considering joining our church? Maybe you would like to know more about us? There will be an Inquirer’s Meeting, Sunday, September 16 following worship in the Library in Fellowship Hall. Bring your

questions! A light lunch will be provided.

Something New! The Hospitality Team is gearing up for another busy fall full of events. As we look toward the Christmas Bazaar, (yes Christmas!), we will be adding a new element.

A Silent Auction. We are hoping it will be as successful as the Basket Raffle has been. In order for this to be the case, we are asking for your assistance. We will

need donations of items and or services. For example, you may be an excellent gardener and could volunteer your services that someone could bid on. The winner would then contact and work with you to work out the details. Perhaps you are a

skilled organizer. You could donate your time to help someone organize their home closet or garage. Alternatively, you could purchase an item and donate it. A piece of luggage, dinner at a favorite restaurant, etc. It need not be expensive, but your

donation would help the church in a big way. Please give thought to this new project and prayerfully consider how you might help. Thank you!

Music Notes On Sunday, August 18th, approximately 26 singers, instrumentalists, and friends of the music ministry gathered for a three-hour retreat at the church. We enjoyed breakfast and fellowship, and then rehearsed some new music. Most importantly, we did some group activities, including

exploring issues that face the music ministry, the church, and our community at large. Some of the take-aways from these sessions are provided here for your own reflection:

People participate in the choir and other ministries primarily for emotional and spir-itual reasons, as well as fostering friendships and celebrating God through art.

Of all the issues in Spring Hill and Hernando County, our participants believe that poor education and a bad job market, a lack of affordable housing, and various jus-tice issues (including race and age relations) are things that we should focus on in our outreach.

We also explored some issues with the music ministry, keeping in mind that the search for a new music director and the church’s financial solvency are going to be factors in 2019.

Some things that we will be doing this year through the music ministry will help address these issues. We will be doing a concert-caliber Lessons & Carols open to the community on De-cember 23rd. We will also be ready to do a prayer service for peace, with music and choir, in the event of another natural or manmade disaster. We will also be singing Psalm responses during worship from September through November to nurture a deeper engagement with scripture. Finally, we will be including different styles of music and ensembles while main-taining a commitment to the substance of the music and text.

Our rehearsals will begin again at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, August 29th. Our first time back singing during worship will be Sunday, September 9th.

Kurt Glacy shared the following information from his Alma Mater, Boston University:

The Boston University School of Theology (BUSTH) is pleased to announce the return of two online courses open for registration for the Fall 2018 semester. “Faith and Finance” and “Ethical Leader-ship: Character, Civility, and Community” have opened registration and classes begin on Septem-ber 6 and September 18, respectively. The former, “Faith & Finance”, is taught by Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Bryan Stone, and “Ethical Leadership” is taught by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Professor of Ethical Leadership, Walter E. Fluker. “Faith & Finance” will enable students to learn about the complex relationships between faith and money, and acquire strategies for wise, faith-based stewardship of finances. The course seeks to prepare leaders to utilize practical steps to reduce indebtedness, execute wise financial planning both as individuals and as leaders within their respective institutions, and to reflect theologically and ethi-cally on financial literacy and institutional stewardship. The course will feature several presentations from Dean Stone, and video interviews with scholars and religious leaders who utilize faith-based ap-proaches to financial stewardship, debt reduction, and economic leadership in their communities and organizations. According to Dean Stone, “The course will help learners employ principles, practices, and tools for wise financial stewardship, understand the long-term consequences of debt and steps for stewarding and reducing debt, assess strategies for socially responsible investing, appraise financial reports and organizational features of faith-based non-profits, and evaluate approaches to faith-based fundrais-ing.” This course will also be made available to the national academic and seminary community, in-cluding schools within the Association for Theological Schools (ATS). “Ethical Leadership: Character, Civility, and Community” has had record registrations in previous years, and co-sponsored by the BU Wheelock College of Education & Human Development and BUSTH. As part of Professor Fluker’s work with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Initiative for the Develop-ment of Ethical Leadership (MLK-IDEAL), this course will provide theoretical and practical approach-es to the development of character, civility, and community for leaders and emerging leaders in edu-cation, business, nonprofit, academic, religious, and other professions. The course examines the per-sonal, public and spiritual dimensions of leadership within the context that Fluker calls “the intersec-tion of lifeworlds and systems"; and outlines principles and practices of ethical leadership from a di-verse field of leadership theories. The course is open to all. A major outcome of the course is an Ethical Leadership Toolkit which will include several heuristic aids: an Ethical Leadership Model™, a Model for Ethical Decision-Making, practical exercises that are part of life-long leadership development (Remembering, Retelling and Reliving Our Stories and Looking, Listening and Learning); and a variety of aesthetic and literary sources, case studies, jour-naling and meditative practices.

The online course also presents video interviews from leadership theorists as well as prominent lead-ers in the areas of education, business, government and global citizenship such as: Professor David Gergen, Congressman John Lewis, Professor Howard Gardner, Ambassador Andrew Young, Ambas-sador James Joseph, Professor Max Bazerman, and Professor Barbara Kellerman, Dr. Jochen Fried (Salzburg Global Seminar).Faculty, deans, students, and administrators throughout Boston University are also interviewed on their visions for ethical leadership in the role of higher education. Registration is OPEN for both courses, and each course offers a Certificate of Achievement for $49 upon the full completion of the course:

The Faith Formation Team has been working on plans for our fall Church School Program which will start on September 9. We will once again offer the “one-room schoolhouse” model utilizing the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum that starts out with a 4-week focus on crea-tion. All books and activities are appropriate for children ages 4- elementary school. If you would like to teach or co-teach this fall (a month or an occasional Sunday), please talk with a member of the Faith Formation Team. We would love for you to joint us. Our nursery will be staffed every Sunday. On the first Sunday of each month, all children are invited to stay in the service of worship which includes communion. Our youngest children (infant through kindergarten) may go to the nursery if families desire. Adult Bible Study and book groups will be starting soon! Look for more information in the church bulletin or in Pastor Robin’s report.
