1. Over View

The objective of this project is to accomplish the color matching to Anheuser Busch brand’s logos, such as Budweiser, Michelob or Busch Beer. The customer will use various media, and high quality color matching has to be accomplished on each media. If necessary, different color matching table will be prepared for each media.

1.1. Customer Information

Final printer user : Anheuser Busch Integrator : Tekgraf Business opportunity : 900 units all over US. Print volume : 100K sheets per month Tekgraf provides whole print environment to Anheuser Busch, including printers, applications, media.

4. Customization from Standard Product

Key missing functionality on C9200DXn is Ink Simulation capability. Ink simulation will be implemented by following.

a. Custom controller F/W. b. Custom printer driver. c. SWOP ink simulation color matching table.

Another missing functionality is special media support. Special media support will be implemented by following.

d. Custom PU F/W.

4.1. Custom Controller F/W

(1) Ink simulation mechanism is implemented in C9400 but not other models. (2) Custom F/W enables the ink simulation mechanism. (3) Ink simulation table can be stored in either printer resident Flash ROM or printer’s HDD. (4) F/W can choose one table from installed multiple tables by driver command. (5) This custom F/W to be treated separately from standard product. It needs to generate new SKU. (6) Initial shipment will use Flash DIMM in case some problem is reported. (about 30 units) (7) Rest of the shipment will use OTP ROM (One Time Programmable ROM).

4.2. Custom Printer Driver

(1) Due to Ink simulation was not available, printer driver doesn’t have that option. (2) Custom printer driver will have option to select target ink type of Ink simulation. (3) Custom driver is PostScript driver only. (4) Printer for this customer will have 2 CDs in a box.

(5) Custom Driver CD will have custom driver and SWOP color table only. (ICC Profile is considered as a part of driver.)

(6) SWOP table will be preinstalled into a printer before shipment, however user may erase it by mistake. SWOP table file is copied in CD in case that user will install it again.

4.3. SWOP ink simulation color matching table

(1) Create SWOP ink simulation profile, and install into printer resident Flash ROM. (2) SWOP table will be installed at ODA operation. User doesn’t need to install it. (3) Printer will use TYPE-1 for PROCESS MODE. (4) Color in SWOP profile to be tweaked for better color matching to customer’s brand logos. (5) Profile to be created per media. (If colors are not noticeably different across the media, same profile will be

shared.) (6) Ink simulation table is a device link profile, but OKI proprietary format. (7) Internal grid points are 17x17x17x17, and output is 8 bit CMYK data.

5. Printer Settings

5.1. Printer Engine Firmware Upgrade

Printer engine firmware has to be upgraded if the version is not as below. B1.50.84

5.1.1. How to download Engine Firmware

In Windows, open DOS Box. Connect PC and Printer with Parallel cable. Change directory where the Engine firmware file is placed. Type this command.

5.1.2. How to confirm the firmware has been upgraded

Get in printer menu, INFORMATION MENU Come to PRINT MENU / EXECUTE by pressing ITEM button Press SELECT button to menu settings. You should see on the sheet around very top area

5.2. Process Mode

One of printer’s default setting has to be changed to get correct color. It is Process mode located under COLOR MENU in printer menu. Factory default is set to Type-2 which produces lighter output. For this project, this mode has to be changed to Type-1. Current Default : PROCESS MODE TYPE 2

5.3. Color Balance

Whenever the Process Mode is changed, printer’s color balance has to be adjusted. Color balance has to be adjusted with plain paper, not label or card stock. Color balance menu is located under COLOR MENU in printer menu. Recommended media for color balance :

5.4. Downloading Custom Color Matching Table

OKI has developed custom color matching table for Anheuser Busch logos. This color matching table has to be downloaded to printer. Once it is downloaded, it stays permanently in printer Flash memory even after power cycle.

At print dialog under General Tab, if you click Properties button, below dialog comes up. When you print on special media, refer to 1.3 Supported Media section. Below red marked option has to be set appropriately. Under Print quality tab, below red marked option has to be set as below picture. (This is driver's default)



Under Print quality tab, below red marked option has to be set as below picture. Color Simulation - SWOP Heavy selects the color matching table that you downloaded into printer. This SWOP Heavy is designed for special media other than plain paper. If you click Optins… button in previous dialog, below dialog comes up. Below settings are driver's default, but make sure all options are set as below.



9. Printer Driver Settings (Windows 2000)

At print dialog under General Tab, if you click Properties button, below dialog comes up. When you print on special media, refer to 1.3 Supported Media section. Below red marked option has to be set appropriately. If you click Advanced button in the previous dialog, below dialog comes up (separated to 2 screen shots). Below red marked option has to be set as below picture. Color Simulation - SWOP-Heavy selects the color matching table that you downloaded into printer.
