CARLOS PETTY described how increased need for system interrelatedness has moved to a more open communication protocol that facilitates easier integration for facility monitoring control systems

The benefits of system integration and interoperability can be implemented

in critical facilities design Supporting these protocols begins with developing a clear philosophy and approach to building managements systems (BMS)programmable logic controllers (PLC) network design that embraces new technology trends as they evolve

In preparing to design a network for BMSPLC serving data center consider the power of selecting equipment that facilitates systems integration Moving towards enterprise friendly standard protocols will allow for more flexibility as facilities will install intelligent devices onto existing computerized control systems

Automated controls for data centers

ANTON LAMA and MARY ANN HAY contributed their expertise for an article on designing effective lighting for healthcare facilities

ASHRAE 901 Energy Standard for Buildings has served as a benchmark for new and retrofit commercial building design It continues to lead todayrsquos sustainability minded business culture Compliance with the standard is often required by law and a prerequisite to obtaining a building permit

Once the specific version of the 901 standard has been identified there

are three paths that can be taken to meet the requirements of ASHRAE 901 Energy Standard for Buildings the prescriptive path the Energy Cost Budget Method and the performance requirement method

ASHRAE 901 also applies to renovation projects but exactly what needs to be done to demonstrate compliance with the standard will be determined by the scope of the retrofit itself Getting

involved early in the design can be even more important for a renovation project than in new construction

An understanding of the local codes and standards including ASHRAE 901 with an integrated design team will help foster integrative design and avoid potential roadblocks that may affect schedule and budget

Jeffrey Martin PE a Supervising Mechanical engineer for Syska Hennessy Group discussed the application of ASHRAE 901 from renovation to new construction projects

GARY BRENNEN co-president of Syska Hennessy Group chatted with GlobeStcom on how having developing strategies ahead of time is key when approaching the design of creative office space The emergence of new ldquocreativerdquo and ldquountetheredrdquo office space is overtaking developments and new renovations paving the way for a different approach to infrastructures From an engineering it means dealing with lighter and brighter spaces often using daylight and integrated dimmable lighting and enhanced indoor air quality Today developers must consider the environmental impact each development may have Building owners and occupants can collaborate to identify ways to reduce energy At Syska Hennessey Group strategies are developed ahead of time when approaching the design of creative office space

Heathcare Data CentersEditors of Healthcare Design magazine spoke with JAMES COE senior vice president and director of critical facilities at Syska Hennessy Group (New York) A significant amount of information is being generated in healthcare these days as part of its transition to a technology driven industry All the material needs to be stored safely and securely and many are turning to data centers to deliver

ldquoHospitals first started out with a few computers and then they started centralizing that into a room somewhere in the basement of the hospitalrdquo says James Coe Today healthcare providers are considering a host of options to serve as the next generation of data storage including new or renovated

facilities located on or off campuses outsourcing to third-party operators and cloud services

Industry professionals say the first step in choosing an appropriate storage option is measuring a facilityrsquos or systemrsquos current and projected critical load or how much power computers servers and networking equipment are drawing Organizations also need to

identify their budget and how quickly they need to deploy a solution

Data centers must also account for future growth and expanding data needs Coe says a good rule of thumb in design is to be ldquomodular and scalablerdquo by using a repeatable building block with a certain number of generators UPS modules and chillers and cooling towers

As needs continue to grow Coe says facilities can add more equipment such as another generator or UPS until they eventually need to rebuild the whole infrastructure ldquoYou build in stepping stones to get to the ultimate build-outrdquo he says

SPOTLIGHT LIGHTINGThe challenge in designing effective lighting for healthcare facilities lies in the ability to meet the multiple needs of each space It is the lighting designerrsquos mission to streamline the facilityrsquos needs into a single multi-faceted lighting program In Medical Construction amp Design MayJune issue ANTON LAMA and MARY ANN HAY discuseed strategies in lighting design and shared a case study from the Lankenau Medical Center Main Line Health in Wynnewood PA Syska Hennessy integrated lighting with the hospitalrsquos architectural design so there were not many visible fixtures in the public areas Lama and Hay also provided tips on health care lighting design including employ lighting controls and choose light fixtures and color tempeartures wisely

ROBERT BOLIN and KRISTOPHER BAKER wrote about the role that daylight plays in indoor environmental quality for places of education

There has been increased recognition of how daylight may offer non-energy benefits to occupants of buildings including worker satisfaction

While educators and designers agree daylight offers benefits the challenge will be to find how to engage a daylight space To quote Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier ldquoSpace and light and order Those are the things that men need just as much as they need bread or a place to sleeprdquo

TIMOTHY KRAWETZ in collaboration with other experts wrote an overview offering advice for prefab projects It was devised as a road map with a best practices approach to achieve reliability in a healthcare environment

Megaprojects and smaller healthcare facilities across the US are being built in record time thanks to advanced prefabrication techniques Building teams are able to compress project schedules by performing multiple activities in parallel

ldquoThe sooner they can move people in the sooner the hospital can start generating revenuerdquo says Krawetz Schedule savings from prefabrication can be

significant and also minimizes the risks of delays Other benefits include improved quality better safety metrics and less waste

Creative Office Space

A reception area at the Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood PA Syska Hennessy was able to maximize opportunities for daylighting in patient rooms where a single customized ceiling fixtures was used to provide multiple layers of lighting as needed

JOHN PASSANANTE discussed seven ways workplace mobility can be enhanced

1 Understand your clientrsquos business

2 Engage IT early

3 More wireless infrastructure

4 Integrate AV when possible

5 Understand the layout of collaboration spaces

6 Even wireless is wired

Coordinate telecom rooms and pathways

Extensive consideration should

be given to the entire journey of prefab elements from the offsite warehouse to the installed location in the building
